Something very fishy about Marvin Harrison (1 Viewer)

I know this was talked about a bit more earlier in the season, but the news, or more importantly the lack thereof, about Marvin Harrison is really strange. This is an awfully long time he's been out with word every week he may return while that has yet to happen.

In terms of dynasty potential, is this a situation to pounce on and get him cheap or completely avoid (career-ending?)?

They realize that they'll get the #2 seed without him. Why not keep him out as long as possible. As long as he's ready to go for the playoffs, that's all they care about. I heard Dungy say on Monday that Harrison is "very close" to returning. Take that however you want.

When Harrison hurt his knee he burst the bursa sac.

"What is a bursa?

Every person has hundreds of bursa scattered throughout the body. The function of a bursa is to decrease friction between two surfaces that move in different directions.

The bursa can be thought of as a Ziplock bag with a small amount of oil and no air inside. Imagine rubbing this bag between your hands; movement of your hands would be smooth and effortless. That is what a bursa functions as--a smooth, slippery surface between two moving objects.

You tend to find a bursa at points where muscles and tendons glide over bones. Without the bursa between these surfaces, movements would be painful."

Last I heard, the liquid that entered the knee when the sac burst was still around and hadn't be re-absorbed into the body. This, I would assume, is causing some discomfort and swelling.

As RaiderNation said, they ahve the #2 spot locked up, so there's no need to rush him back.

People can say what they want about him needing practice reps, but IMO, with all the work that Harrison and Manning put in, I really don't think it'll take much time at all before he's ready to go. The silver lining for the Colts here, is that they're getting a really good look at Anthony Gonzalez and his confidence should be quite high going into the playoffs. With that D and a full cadre of WR's (should reports that Harrison will be available for the playoffs be valid), Indy is going to be a nightmare for whoever they match up against.

I think the demise of Harrison is being overstated in many leagues and Harrison will be severely undervalued next season in re-drafts. In a dynasty league if you can get him cheap, do it. He should have at least a couple more solid years in him, but with this injury and his age many dynasty owners may be looking to get rid of him. If I had a late first round pick in a dynasty league, I'd give serious consideration to trading that pick for Harrison. I don't expect any rookie WR drafted this year (that you'd get at the bottom of the 1st) to equal or surpass Harrison's production in the 2008/2009 season.

Superbly informative awesome post  I agree 100%.

Manning not having a clue when his star and most experienced receiver is coming back with the playoffs only 2 weeks away? That would just be weird... I dont buy it. If I were Manning and the team's office didnt include me in that information I'd be pretty frustrated.

That's the problem right there. I heard Dungy and others say that for the last several weeks. They've had some important games that he wasn't a part of, so I don't buy the fact that they'll have the #2 without him. After they lost to NE, they only had a 1 game lead in the division and had a couple of crucial games that he still wasn't a part of. At this point, I would actually be more surprised to see him play again this year than not.I think Sack-Religious post above is quite helpful, but again, it's mostly speculation. In all that I've read about Harrison, none of this has been confirmed and that's a little disconcerting.

Again, something about this whole situation just doesn't feel right, especially given Manning's latest comments....

Why?Manning can't concern himself with the if's and when's of Harrison's knee. He's got to concentrate on building chemistry with the guys he's got on the field with him and winning with them. Harrison's playing status might figure into that equation somewhere, but it's right near the bottom, IMO. Manning can't do anything to make Harrison's knee better, so why should he be kept abreast of it, like he's on the training staff?Manning and Harrison have an almost other-worldly connection on the football field. If/when Harrison comes back, he and Manning will continue to click like they always have. In the interim, Manning's doing what he's got to do to get the best possible rapport with Gonzalez and is approaching the rest of the season like he'll be working with Gonzalez. That's the right approach, IMO.

Plus he used the word "cadre." Mad props on the post.

Dungy has said previously if it were the playoffs then Harrison would play. I also read a comment from him or Polian saying they were avoiding a Bob Sanders situation where he comes back for a week, reaggravates the injury, then misses the next game. I think Marvin will be back in the playoffs which unfortunately doesn't help fantasy owners this year (including me).

He should be kept abreast of it because he runs the offense on the field and because he will be running the offense on the field in the playoffs. Im not saying Manning should have a say in the matter (he shouldnt) and Im not saying he should get minute by minute or day to day updates (he shouldnt) but I think it would be weird if the team hasnt communicated to him whether he can/should expect Harrison to be a weapon in the playoffs.Manning is enough of a professional to focus on developing a relationship with Gonzalez even if he knows that Harrison will be back for the playoffs.

This is the same as Bob Sanders last year.

Why play him hurt if his playing won't affect getting into the playoffs?

I'd do the same thing, and I'd make teams play every week thinking he might play.
