Southwest Airlines fiasco (1 Viewer)

Anyone else dealing with the Southwest Airlines stuff this holiday season? Visiting some family in ABQ, where they are main carrier. Scheduled to fly out tomorrow morning. So far, my flight is still on schedule, but I’m a bit worried with all of the news reports about flights getting cancelled, and not being able to re-book for days. Wondering if any other FBGs in same situation.

Article about it here for anyone not following it.

You probably aren’t getting on that flight. From what I read they are cancelling them a few hours in advance.

Have you booked a backup flight, or is there nothing available? Delta's 24-hour refund policy, for instance, would help you here.

Southwest is bizarre and sad. They used to be, by far, my carrier of choice. Now they are on my "Do Not Fly" list.

Their prices are the highest in the industry and now their customer service sucks.

Edit: Wait. I forgot that I'm flying on them in January. Lol

Hopefully the fuster cluck is figured out by then.

Boss called in today, still has a house full of family who all flew Southwest. One came from Nashville, rest Chicago. We're in the Charlotte area. Southwest told them they might be able to get them on flights by Friday or Saturday. They decided to rent a car and drive it.

He checked flights to Nashville through American (we are an American hub in Charlotte, Nashville is normal $300 flight). Flight today was $3400, tomorrow $1800 and then the rest of the week it was back in normal range.

The **** the airlines pull these days are criminal.

Nothing available. I could get a solo ticket, but nothing for family of three. (I could try to convince wife that I should fly back solo and leave her behind with kid, but I fear that may backfire with me getting left behind with the kid.)

If you have to be somewhere get another carrier.

There is no way I would trust a flight with them right now. Worse, they get you there, then you cannot get back. 70% of all cancellations n the US are Southwest.

Can you get to el paso and fly AA? Vegas is a **** show but maybe El Paso works.

It may be in that link upthread but I heard for the next 7-10 days they will be flying about 1/3 of their normal flights. Yikes.

I fly them up to Sacramento mid-January. Hoping this crap is solved by then. I don't know why I fly them up there every quarter for work. I could spend about the same and take a better airline. They used to be great.

Amtrak does go thru albuquerque. Just saying. Where the heck are you going? I can help look at options.

I have family stuck in NYC trying to get to Florida for past 4 days. They couldn't get a SW flight until Sunday but booked another airline for Friday. They have a relatively pricey rental at a place in Florida that they're paying for and not able to use. I'm sure there are worse stories but pretty crappy situation.

DCA, but if can get to Dulles or BWI, can Uber from there. Flight still on schedule for tomorrow and has not been cancelled yet. Equivalent flight this morning for same time took off as scheduled, but I’m not sure if that means anything.

Appreciate the offer to help look at options, but wife still just wants to stick with current flight and hope all goes well rather than booking something else. I’ll probably do some scouting for options just in case, but may be rolling the dice.

As I don’t do this too often, are backup options like Delta completely refundable up to boarding, or some cost to it?

I do have a rental car here. El Paso or Denver could be an option if get cancelled and need to drive elsewhere for more options than are at the Albuquerque airport.

I only fly Delta so can't speak to anyone else's policies, but Delta gives you a 24-hour period to get a full refund on any booking you make (even if you take the cheaper "non-refundable" fare). That's why I suggested backing up with them if possible for tomorrow, but I know you said it's not an option.

ETA: You have to book directly with Delta online or on the app to get this cancellation option.

Would say right now conservatively 70% chance you get booked. This is more or less what WN is saying for any spoke. They are cancelling last minute. The longer you wait more people have to make the same decisions as you.

Amtrak is sold out until Friday, arrives Sunday taking 48hrs. Yikes. Haven't looked at greyhound yet.

I would 100% plan on not getting their from southwest until Sunday no matter what your app or flight aware shows right at this moment.

Yep.

I was supposed to fly out at 6am this morning from Portland to Chicago. it was my holiday trip to go home and see family. Saw that everything was hitting the fan the past few days, so I kept checking all night. Woke up at 3:30am to shower and head to the airport. Right at 3am I got the text and saw the flight status was cancelled. No options to re-book until 12/31. It was pretty crazy weather here…60 mph gusts all day.

Just re-booked to next week, but it’s a shorter trip. Oh well.

They still have better customer service and in fight experience compared to both legacy carriers (United in particular) and budget airlines (Spirit). They are my preferred airline despite the higher fares.

Normally I love SW...they are a little more expensive but by the time you add pick you seat fees, checked bag fees for spirit it's really not much more.

Other pet peeve we have the spirit membership so we get an extra 10pounds for checked bags. Every freaking time we check in ot doesn't recognize it, then the people say something, then we explain and they say oh ok .... Smh

I thought SW was one of the less expensive airlines.
Varies on routes. Also early stage tends to be priced cheaper, so buy 180+ days early and you see a price maybe half of 60+.

Getting a companion pass makes alot of sense. A 2xCP family can save some serious cash.

That was their original selling point. I can't remember the last time I priced a SW flight and it was cheaper than the main carriers. Only when I get lucky and they run a sale on a specific route that works for me.

I only fly Southwest within California and have never had a problem. But I would shop around if I was going anywhere else.

i had my return flight from long beach, ca to oakland scheduled for 550 today, went to check in yesterday at 550 and got a cancellation error. no email, no text just an error when i went to check in then i get back to the main screen and it says cancelled. well ****, so i go to rebook and the soonest is 1/1 :wall: luckily i can telework and i’m staying at my parents so no lodging costs but my airport parking will run me another $140 for the week. ended up booking a flight on 1/2 so that i can enjoy new years down here in orange county (plus the weather is better) but i’m not overly thrilled as i can only handle so much family time :bag: hard to beat a $40 ticket with no baggage fees and the ease of long beach airport but if i had to rent a car to get home or stay in a hotel then i’d be way more pissed. hopefully i’m able to get home on monday

had to fly international on Lufthansa recently. US based airlines and airports should be ashamed. German airport runs like a Rolex. Down to the cafeterias. US ones must be managed by 12 year olds with an etch-e-sketch.

I had by far the worst experience with an airline ever earlier this year with Lufthansa. Their system crashed and stood in line for 6 hours to get rebooked. They did bring out free airline snacks and drinks to the horde, though. They had so many cancellations I got stuck with a crappy hotel with bed bugs. They lost my luggage and took 2 weeks to get it back. I got routed from Frankfurt, to Brussels, to JFK, to DIA, then DFW instead of my direct from Frankfurt to DFW.

Sounds like a complete cluster. Have a coworker stuck in Dallas, but at least he's staying at his Daughter's place. I almost always fly SW for work, but I feel like their cancellations have become more frequent.

Apparently Southwest employees are raging against the new CEO. Not sure if that is the source of this or if the current situation is causing that rage.

They have, but it's been that way across the industry. They have gone so lean that there is no margin for error.

i just read it’s the software that schedules the crews and that they can’t track their people to figure out who is working what flight

3rd world problems 😕

Pretty sad what's happening with SW. Back in the day (2000's) used fly Reno to Portland all the time...cheap. The flight attendants would joke around over the PA. Get a beer, and some pretzels....it was about as enjoyable as you could imagine for air travel. Sounds like they are strugglin.
