Speculation if a Damar Hamlin situation occurred this week. (1 Viewer)

Watching the playoff games this past weekend and was thinking how the NFL would have handled the Damar Hamlin situation if it occurred yesterday.

I am guessing they would have suspended the game on Sunday but played it on Monday.

What do you think?

I almost started a thread that week exploring different hypotheticals like that. What if it happened during the final week of the season between two teams fighting for a playoff spot? What if it happened between the two worst teams, and determined who got the No. 1 pick in a year there was a generational QB prospect coming out?

In some ways, the league really lucked out, logistically speaking

Clearly, it is impossible to play, or complete at any time, a game under such circumstances. Or else they would have done it three weeks ago. That game was critical, the first round bye was even at stake. If that game couldn't be played or continued, I don't know what game would be. Yes I'm being facetious, because I'm annoyed.

Honestly, if you're going to make everybody come back in on Monday and finish the game while their teammate is still clinging to life in the ICU (or worse), then you should just finish the game on Sunday. I'm coming around rather strongly to the view that that's what should have happened with Bills-Bengals.

Best guess? I think the game probably resumes the following weekend as the only game on the schedule (Saturday, maybe Sunday). AFC and NFC Championship Games get pushed back to the week before the Super Bowl. Obviously, there are big implications there.

With that said, I think there's a real possibility @Godsbrother is right about Monday night. Really bad look for the league, but I think it's possible. Don't think that you can even rule out resuming the game Sunday night if his condition is learned to be critical but stable before the point that they have to make a call.

Yuck to the whole thing. I hate speculating, but it's a fair question to ask.

It's a fair question to ask, and ultimately unimportant. They'd figure it out, and some folks would be happy and others would be angry, and everyone would move on.
How would they figure it out? Nobody really knows. They have Monday and they have a bye week to play with before the Super Bowl. But the league would figure it out, like they did in the actual case. I'm sure they have contingencies and policies in place now that they didn't have before.

I think it’s important to clarify whether we’re talking about instead of the Hamlin collapse or in addition to. If it’s the former, there’s probably a lot more pressure to continue the game. But if we’re still in our existing timeline and the precedent has already been set, no one’s going to be like, “We canceled the game for Damar Hamlin, but now that it happened to Hamar Damlin we’re just going to roll him over to the sidelines and play through.” There’s simply no way they could get away with it even if they wanted to
