then there was that whole boxing challenge..but this was before one of his close friends was killedDidn't he pay 38,000 dollars for his current number????
FYPDidn't he sign a 50.5 million dollar deal and 38k means nothing to him?????
Nah. ST's number should not be retired, I agree. Superb player, incomplete career does not equate to a retire-worthy number. While the Skins ain't the Yankees, you can't retire 'em all.Meh, I don't have a problem with this. I don't like those asking for the number to be retired though.
The literal answer is Smoot left. I liked that 36 on him because it looked like a safety's number, which fit with his wrecking ball style of play. I think he'd always liked that number and with Portis wearing 26 (which he'd worn at UM) he went with 21.Why did Taylor change his number from 36 (as a rookie) to 21?
It was Matthews. He made me forget about Sonny for a while, usually when he made me drink heavily.I don't think that the Redskins ever "retire" a number (maybe for Sammy Baugh) but they just don't issue the hallowed numbers (9, 44, 23, 81) again. Remember when some "hot shot" FA back during the OBC's time wanted Sonny's number and there was a big stink about it. For some reason I think it was Shane Matthews.
Why would the NFL care what jersey number he wears? It's within the allowed numbers for his position, so he's not breaking that rule. I can't think of any reason to not allow a player to change their number.I can't imagine the NFL would allow him to switch numbers. I mean, they woudln't let Jake Plummer keep a #40 tribute sticker on his helmet.I think it's a nice gesture, but I just don't know if the NFL would allow it.
Yes, Matthews wanted 9. He called Sonny to ask permission. Sonny said, "Sure, but I really don't think you want to deal with the crap you'll get for wearing 9." So, Matthews wore 6.Wuerfel wanted 7. I think he went through the same process as Matthews with Theismann and settled on 17.Then there was that undrafted rookie TE from Howard who wore 49. (What was his name?) That actually ended up being the final slap in the face for Mitchell and retired.I agree they shouldn't retire 21. I can see putting him into the Ring of Fame, though. It was Matthews. Agreed. Jack couldnt wear #40 because it was against the uniform code (and because the NFL can be real tight asses at times). This would be an allowable switch under any circumstances as 21 is a RB eligible number. Why would the NFL care what jersey number he wears? I don't think they'll care if it was a change for good, but a change for a game, I think they'd raise a stink. I mean, the NFL has all kinds of crazy "uniform" related standards and I would think that allowing people to change their number for a game would be one such rule. I don't agree with it, but I can imagine them offering up a slippery slope argument along the lines of "what happens when another person passes and a player wants to pay tribute to them for a game"...Why would the NFL care what jersey number he wears? It's within the allowed numbers for his position, so he's not breaking that rule. Favre did damage to himself and his homelife, manned up, faced his demons and is a happier person today for it. Clinton Portis advocated Michael Vick's right to fight, kill and mutilate dogs because they were his, and it was his property. CP Rules. What a joke. Isn't Favre a big hunter too? I don't know about you, but killing animals is a lot worse than someone having an opinion on killing animals in my book. I am not a hunter and don't see the "sport" in it, but it is the means by which State DNR offices have determined the control of wildlife population is best handled. You could probably drum up a healthy debate in the FFA on the subject if you so desire. On the other hand, fighting dogs to the death and killing them by slamming them to the ground, drowning them and worse has been determined illegal and reprehensible by the courts and society. You would probably get much less debate on that.Isn't Favre a big hunter too? I don't know about you, but killing animals is a lot worse than someone having an opinion on killing animals in my book. Please get over yourself. You are commenting on things that, honestly, many of us don't believe you fully understand. Portis' comments in regard to dog fighting, without full understanding of the context of his intentions and the culture in which he (and Vick) may have been raised, are rather meaningless. Why is that? Much like your little diatribes on how Portis is so awful for making his comments, without you looking at anything else about the man. As others mentioned, you could make a case that Favre is a bloodthirsty sadist for enjoying the killing of animals in his own right.
This thread is about Portis throwing a supportive jesture in Taylor's direction. A bit of a tribute. You are the one that brought up Vick and dog fighting. Are you just this dense, or trying (rather unsuccessfully) to make a point?I never "cheered" Portis and his support. Just as you never took his comments in any context... here the man is trying to do right by a fallen friend, and you look to blanket his entire being by one set of comments?I wrote, but erased a "diatribe" in response to this. This belongs in the FFA. But while we are at it, I guess you don't eat steak due to the cruely of slaughterhouses either?I'm with you on Portis. Great jesture. And it has nothing to do with his past comments. Bringing them up here is asinine. And FWIW, hunting and dog fighting are not one and the same. But to dismiss any similiarities is to be rather ignorant of reality, especially for those who pursue the thrill of the kill, and not looking for dinner.
I was just playing around. I was just stirring up the hornets nest a little in fun.Can we please stop comparing hunting to dog fighting. It is silly.
I love my steak. I was talking about hunting for the thrill of the kill... which is NO different than watching dogs fight to the death imo. And many hunters hunt for this reason (regardless of what they might say publicly). But my main point, which agrees with you, is that to bring up Portis' former comments, whether you understand them or not, whether you agree with them or not, does not belong here as Portis is trying to do the right thing.I will say this... those who jump to the "thug" card say a LOT about themselves, imo. And what they say is NOT flattering. This belongs in the FFA. But while we are at it, I guess you don't eat steak due to the cruely of slaughterhouses either?I'm with you on Portis. Great jesture. At this point, according the NFL office, Clinton Portis and/or the Redskins have made no request for Portis to change his No. to 21, Sean's number. Any player would have to receive league approval before making such a change.
Portis could still make that request down the line, but as of now no part of this process has been set in motion.
As with everything else, if this changes I will let you guys know.
I don't think Portis is a thug, he just never really thinks before he talks. He always likes to hear himself talk and enjoys the media spotlight.Favre did damage to himself and his homelife, manned up, faced his demons and is a happier person today for it. This will probably take a couple of weeks to materialize. I'm guessing that he'll probably ask Sean's family for their blessing in the change and that's not really something he'd want to bring up right now since everyone, inlcuding himself, are still mourning.Link
