Stafford has a fractured finger (1 Viewer)

Matthew Stafford played the game today with a fractured finger. That explains the gloves and wildness. I haven't heard when he injured it or anything else.

CHICAGO -- Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford said he wore a glove against the Chicago Bears during a 37-13 loss because he had a fractured finger in his right throwing hand.

Stafford wore a glove last week during practice, but previously said he did it to get used to Chicago's cold climate.

After completing 33 of 63 passes for 329 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions, Stafford admitted he wore the glove against Chicago to protect his finger.

"It's fractured, but it's not bad," Stafford said.

Stafford had only throw four interceptions entering Sunday's game, but now has eight this season.

When asked about throwing with the glove, Stafford said it did not bother him. He said the wind in Solider Field was more problematic than the fractured finger.

"It felt fine," Stafford said. "I felt like I made some real good throws with it. I made some tough throws with it."

If he really thinks he made some good throws with it, they might want to give him a quick head exam just in case.

It was either the News or Free Press but he apparently injured it during the Denver game. He was not limited in practice at all though leading up to the Chicago game. Fact that Schwartz kept him out there the entire game when frankly he had no business being out there due to the score makes me think the injury isn't going to keep him out of any games. Whether he throws the ball better next game remains to be seen - the WRs didn't do him any favors today with their drops and it was windy in Chicago today. Next two games are inside at Ford Field so that should help.

I thought if a player got any treatment for an injury, it had to be reported?

No way would I have started him today if I had known he had a broken finger on his throwing hand.

Exactly....I am about tired of the Jim Scwartz act. Now he isn't reporting injuries? Next week he will probably have his whole team questionable.I'm surprised he didn't try to fight somebody after the game.

he didnt miss any practice time

Last week I had to decide to trade Romo or Stafford. I think I made the wrong choice.
This is one of many examples of an overreaction to this one game...not just Stafford, but the Lions. They just didn't have it yesterday. They had 2 early turnovers and after Hester's punt return TD it snowballed and all of a sudden they were down 20 points before they knew it. That is not an easy thing for a young team to handle sometimes. Turnovers can cause any team to get blown out and up to now the Lions had the fewest turnovers in the league. People are writing the Lions off based on this game and I think that is too much of an overreaction.

As an owner who rolled the dice and took Stafford as his QB in a startup dynasty league this year, all I can say is "I enjoyed the good times, now I have to ride through the bad".

I didn't hear anything concerning about his finger (did see it listeD). Overall, I think us Stafford owners got a little spoiled early and this is just what happens sometimes. He and Calvin can't be Superman every week. Its unrealistic to expect Calvin to have 2 TDs each game and Stafford to throw 3-4.

The weather was a factor and the quick hole they dug themselves into didn't help. It was just one of those days. Brady had a 4 INT game earlier this year; doesn't mean it was time to get rid of him.

I expect them to improve and represent well especially on Thanksgiving. It will be ok. cost me a couple of games in two leagues today but at least it wasn't the playoffs.

Call the waaaaaaaambulance. His bigger problem is that he throws it to Calvin every play. Reminds me of Favre with Sterling Sharpe. Best thing for the Lions would be to lose Calvin for about a month.

lots of comedians on this site, i wish people on this site had as much football info as they do jokes.how can you not be happy for the lions and they way they are playing scrappy? people here i assume would be all over stafford if he didnt play with his history.footballguys.com, where everyone is an expert i guess. at least its what i notice in my 3 months here.

I'd prefer Romo to Stafford going Forward too. Better weapons and he's a better all around QB.

I hope you are right, I had a trade on the table for MJD with me giving up Stafford. The other owner yanked the trade after this game. Then again I own Vick so this might be a good thing for me if Vick keeps having bad games. Hope last night was a fluke game for Stafford and not a trend of things to come

They play outside the confines of the rules that the other teams abide by. Kind of like taking shots at guys in handcuffs. Punk moves.

I don't think that's what people are doing at all. I think people see several problems:1) The Lions are 2-3 over their last 5 games.

2) They have only beaten 2 winning teams (Dallas and the home game against the Bears)

3) They are 4-3 in the NFC - but still have to play the Packers twice and the Saints. They should win over the Panthers and Vikings - but that would put their conference record at 6-6. Other teams vying for NFC wildcard spots:

The Bears (who are already 6-3 in the conference and dates with Seattle and Minny left)

Cowboys (4-2 in the NFC) - still get to play TB, Arizona and Washington - and Philly at home.

Falcons (4-4 in the NFC but they hold the tie breaker over the Lions) - still get to play TB, Carolina and Minny. Basically, the Lions playoff hopes are slipping away quickly as they pile up losses in the NFC - and to teams they will likely be competing against for a wildcard playoff spot.

4) The Lions have the 27th ranked rushing offense in the NFL. Since the Monday night game, the Lions haven't had an RB rush for over 58 yards. That's a problem - especially as the weather starts to turn bad.

The Lions made some hay in the beggining of the season against mediocre opponents - which is what they are supposed to do. Good for them. Now we will see what they can do against good teams, and how they manage without a running threat and only 1 reliable WR. The fact is, they don't look nearly as good against good teams - in fact they look more similar to the "same old Lions" than a team that's a legit threat to make a wildcard run.

Your rationalization hamster is going to need some gatorade. Lions play dirty. I don't hate the Lions. Nobody hates the Lions. I live in Michigan. Football is physical, but then why is Stafford whining about his booboo? Everybody has booboos. And Jim Schwartz looks to be having an identity crisis since Jim Harbaugh big timed him. What is that mustache thing? He's ridiculous.

This is horrible logic (if it can be even be called that). First off, what Deacon Jones or anyother former player - who played when the RULES were different - thinks is completely irrelevant. Regardless as to what you say ("i say they play football the way it should be played.") or how you think football should be played, there are rules. Playing outside of those rules is illegal - and in some cases "dirty". There are hits today that are penalized and fineable that weren't 10 years ago (let alone 25+ years ago). Those hits are illegal and dirty now, despite being perfectly legal and to many, acceptable, then.

Arguing how "you think the game should be played" as opposed to how it is played and the rules that currently exsist pointless, arrogant and completely irrelevant. The Lions play dirty - just watch the hit on Cutler in the endzone, when the DL drives him to the ground, making sure to plant his helmet firmly in the chin of the QB...and well after the ball was out. Legal 40 years ago? Sure. Today? No.

Does Deacon Jones think it's dirty play? Probably - because he is smart enough to realize that the game and it's rules have eveolved.

my point is physical is not dirty, we just have learned to believe that it is.the fact is the referee throws a flag on any hit that looks to hard, on simple pushing and shoving between men on a field with high emotions, anytime the qb looks to get touched, or even when we celebrate the purpose of football (scoring).

if that is football to you, then yes we have a difference in opinion.

i believe you talk trash to your opponent, you celebrate when you score, you knock the other player out of the game starting with the qb, and when your done you dont shake the hand of the person who just beat you.

tell me now, which would you want to watch?

yes my point is full of logic, since the football i use to watch many years ago that created the game of today change because of "Todays sensitivity" disgusts me, because it changed the face of football.

I'm all for change, but not when you change the face of the game.

Romo is 7 years older and has made a million more mistakes in those 7 years so I would hope he'd be a better Qb with all the lessons he's learned from those mistakes. Barring injury, though, I'm 99% certain we'll all look back on both careers and realize stafford is 10 times the Qb Romo is.It's amazing what a good running game will do for a qb. Look at how Romo has improved since Murray exploded on to the scene. Suddenly looks a hell of a lot smarter now that defenses have to respect that aspect of the Cowboy offense.

I liked your earlier point about how people would have grilled Stafford had he NOT played with the finger injury, given his history. On this topic, as a person who remembers a much different game years ago, I agree with the spirit of your thought but not the letter of the law aspect of it. The rules HAVE changed and it is a different game. Gone are the days where a 20-17 defensive body bag game is actually the exciting type of game people talk about for the next week. Today the rules promote offense and protect player's safety. And that is hard to argue against. If we had a way to know, we would likely be shocked by knowing how many guys played in the 80's with concussions, etc.

So, if the rules says you can't do something, then it is dirty to break and bend rules. I was shocked that there was no penalty yesterday when Suh ripped Cutler's helmet off on that play. I thought it was just a good physical play but something tells me in the back of my head that had that been Brady or Rodgers ro or someone like that, it would have been flagged. We may not agree with it but we have to recognize that people collectively hold their breath and gasp when they see star players in positions where they look like they might be hurt.

Because when they win they are sky high and when they lose they:-Go after the opposing coach

-Cheap shot the team multiple times

or

When the QB throws an INT and doesn't make the tackle:

-throws his hands in the air calling out the WR or begging the Refs

-throws down an opposing player by the helmet once he is out of play

Also meet Nick Fairley everyone:

Well, that and his punctured lung has healed along with his broken rib. You didn't hear him whining about it either. All he did was lead his team to victory in a hostile environment against the second best team in the NFC.

This isn't a video game. These are real people that can barely walk the next day because of "hits" and some day may committ suicide(Dave Duerson) because of the beating they took in this game. If you don't care about player safety and celebrate injured players then I suggest you wake up! I can tell you're an armchair QB and haven't played the game. Nor have you coached a player that is crying because he just got seriously injured and is in pain. He knows he may never play again or physically be the same ever again, but you encourage it.You're lacking RESPECT for the game. Football has a sense of honor to it, I hope you find it someday.

Not likely.

First thing I thought when I heard he had a finger injury. Can't use that as an excuse. However, they kept commentating that stafford was wearing gloves during the game which was unusual for him and there was no rainy damp weather.
