Star Trek - Into Darkness (1 Viewer)

This Q&A style review is hilarious, and sums up a lot of problems I had with the movie. I still overall had a good time and will certainly be seeing it again, it just fell way short of what I was hoping for.

After making a mere $84 million at the U.S. box office, Star Trek Into Darkness is considered by some to be a disappointment. Perhaps the problem is that it was a touch confusing. To help our readers better understand it, we've complied and answered these Frequently Asked Questions about the movie.

Review
Well, I'm glad I didn't go see this. Sounds horrible.
Talk about taking all the fun out of a movie...yikes
No joke. I couldn't keep reading the review because it was so relentlessly negative. I'm a huge Trek nerd and I loved this movie. Old Trek fans need to move the hell on and let a new generation of fans grow. TNG-era Trek got 3 whole series and several movies before it naturally waned in popularity. That era is done and won't be coming back, just enjoy the new stuff for what it is: pulp sci-fi with heavy handed social commentary (terrorism, drone strikes, etc.). And really, is that any different from what Star Trek has always been?
Yes, it's completely different. In a bad way. I was stoked after the reboot. I thought it was done brilliantly and gave the series room to go almost anywhere. The gave us a standard, B grade action movie with a few elements from Star Trek II that they uncomfortably wedged in. It was crappy sci-fi and the social commentary didn't click.

Wasnt Carol Marcus a molecular biologist in the original Trek universe?

Yeah, I assume the career switch is Eric Banas fault.
:lmao:
I have a theory that Abrams was always a closet Star Wars fan. This movie is nothing but a way to inflict all the damage of the mistakes that Lucas made in the prequels into the Star Trek franchise in order to allow him to re-invigorate Star Wars on equal footing. From injecting the dead tribble to Spock yelling "Kaaaaaaahn" a la Vader's "Noooooo!", I'd say he did a fine job. Bring on the SW sequels!!

he was not in the closet at all. He has always been very vocal about his love of Star Wars even when he first signed on to direct the Star Trek reboot. Here is a tidbit from a 2009 interview

http://herocomplex.latimes.com/uncategorized/star-trek-dir-1/#/0

GB: “Star Wars” vs. “Star Trek” is sort of a classic Beatles vs Stones debate for sci-fi fans of a certain age. You have said you wanted to infuse your “Trek” revival with some lessons learned from the George Lucas universe. Can you talk about that?

JJA: Well, I’m just a fan of “Star Wars.” As a kid, “Star Wars” was much more my thing than “Star Trek” was. If you look at the last three “Star Wars” films and what technology allowed them to do, they covered so much terrain in terms of design, locations, characters, aliens, ships — so much of the spectacle has been done and it seems like every aspect has been covered, whether it’s geography or design of culture or weather system or character or ship type. Everything has been tapped in those movies. The challenge of doing “Star Trek” — despite the fact that it existed before “Star Wars” — is that we are clearly in the shadow of what George Lucas has done.

Loved the movie but I'm a bit of a Trekker, grew up with TNG. My biggest complaint was brining Nemoy back. I felt it was lazy writing and I hope they don't keep relying on him for things. Loved the Tribble and the bromance between Kirk and Spock was great. I think the scene between them was well done.

BTW, just tried watching Wrath of Khan. I just couldn't get through the first 30 minutes.

No they aren't.

No Trekker wants to watch Spock die.

Or watch William Shatner attempt to act out grief.

Neither of which happen in the first 30 minutes.

I have no idea where he is coming from then.

So, yeah, I'm looking forward to it. Uhura gets nekkid, right? (Whoda ever thought you'd type that? Nichelle Nichols isn't exactly Hally Berry).
No. Someone who is supposed to be a version of Carol Marcus gets mostly nekkid. A fact NOW recognized by Damon Lindelof as gratuitous and misogynistic.

Zoe Saldana nekkid would make me miss at least 5 minutes of the movie due to bathroom time.
At least it's not Nichelle Nichols fan dancing in (IIRC) Star Trek 5. :yucky:

She didn't like the first 30 minutes. I just have no connection with the original cast other than watching some random episodes. I've got a huge emotional link to TNG but just can't wrap my mind around the original. The first 30 minutes of Wrath of Khan was boring because it was centered around the characters and their interactions which is lost on me.

Picard sucks. Wesley Crusher should also have been shot out of a photon tube into a dwarf star.

It sets the tone for the remainder of the movie. Even if you don't know how deep the Spock/Kirk/McCoy relationship goes, it still gives you the idea of how worn out Kirk is.

Which gives his metaphoric "rebirth" of spirit even more impact by the ending.

Not sure I agree. Wesley, yeah, don't care if he drew oxygen. But TNG was a great series. If the original was better it's not by much.

TNG was a brilliant series. Once the characters found their footing in the middle of season 2, they rode out the writers strike and then hit the ground running from season 3 on putting out one good show after another for the next 5 seasons.

I am not typically a fan of episodic TV as I much more prefer arc stories but TNG did episodic TV very very well.

I'll give it another shot, I think I watched it too close to Into Darkness.

Yeah, the first season of TNG isn't very good. Picard is too Shakespeareian, Riker is a dork, Data is too emotional, and Welsey is Wesley.

Wait, people are upset with the girl undressing scene? Are they also upset with the two girls in the bed scene? Stupid beyond belief. It's a damn movie and you see more skin on the damn beach.

If Abrams puts Lando in a bed with ANY girl, let alone 2, Jar Jar might not roll over in his grave but George Lucas might. And I would be pretty pissed for bringing my kids into the world of Star Wars.

I didn't realize this was about Star Wars....thought we were talking about Star Trek. My bad.

TNG is much better imo
I thought so as well... until I tried watching the first couple episodes on Netflix. I was shocked how bad it was.

I think NewlyRetired is right that it took a couple seasons to bake before it tasted good.
Haha, yeah, the poor quality of the acting/writing in season 1 of TNG was a bit of a nasty "surprise" when I was re-watching them on the restored Blu Ray disks. Totally worth the money, though.

Guess I need to spell out exactly how this relates to your post:

I can see why people might be upset. They bring their kids to a wholesome franchise that they have grown up with, expecting to usher in a new generation, and they are hit with lewdness that they didn't anticipate. PG-13 should have warned them that some skin might be involved, but in my opinion the threesome was beyond the pale. I am not a huge Star Trek fan but it's similar to Star Wars in that I too have introduced my kids to that series like many Star Trek fans probably have. Plus it's the same director, and if he pulls the same thing next year by adding in this type of unnecessary lasciviousness, I will be equally unhappy as the people to whom you refer.

Are you all set then, or do you want me to pick up some feminine products for you while I'm out?

I get your POV, but in the first remake, didn't they have the green alien chick half naked while they were at the academy?

Yes and and it also had Zoe stripping as well. But the whole point is meaningless. That was less skin than you would see on a typical 1 hour Star Trek TOS episode. There was nothing wholesome about Shatner's Kirk constantly wooing and bedding alien beauties.

The first two seasons of TNG are pretty bad, with the exception of the first Borg episode. That showed what they could do
The episode, called Q-Who was solid. The season 2 episode that set the standard for what was to come was Measure of a Man, when Riker is forced to prove in military court that Data is nothing more than Star Fleet property. Season 2 suffered unevenness in the overall scripts because of the writers strike that year.

TNG and TOS acted in polar opposites.

TNG started very poorly and then by season 3, it took off and kept a relative high level of consistency through season 7.

TOS had 99% of its quality episodes in the first 2 seasons. Season 3 was an unmitigated disaster. Some of the most abysmal Trek episodes of any season live in TOS season 3. Season 3 saw their production budget cut and Roddenberry so fed up with things that he stepped away from the day to day running of the show before season 3 started.

No one was upset. Purely a manufactured story by a PR-team. It worked. No matter how big the movie is free publicity saying there is a really "hot" scene never hurts.

I thought TNG and DS9 both did good arcs; The Klingon civil war arc was epic, and I liked the Dominion war arc that stretched over the last 2 or so seasons of DS9.

Also, regarding JJ taking over Star Wars, I just don't want him to alter the weapons fire like they have with Trek. It seems that everyone's doing what the BSG reboot did. Instead of frikkin' laser beams, it's like the ships are spitting out watermelon seeds. And don't call it 'more realistic', we're talking about frikkin' LASER BEAMS.

That's one of my favorite ST episodes from any series.

Why was the admiral going to kill everybody on the enterprise? That didn't make sense to me.

TNG was 99.9% episodic. It was in no way true long form arc story telling, imo. True arcs not only contain continuing stories but also significant character development. The characters by middle of season 3 are almost identical to what they write in season 7. DS9 came much much closer to arc story telling but was a bit too afraid to go full bore ala Babylon 5 and interspersed a bunch of stand alone episodes that kind of ruined the flow of a fantastic story line. There is only one season of Trek that was truely a non stop arc story form and that was Season 3 of Enterprise.

No offense, but this is way over the top. Alice Eve showed as much skin as you might see on a beach; there was nothing "lewd" about it. And as for the unexpected or "unanticipated" factor, I can think of 15 TOS eps off the top of my head that featured just as much skin - - "Mirror, Mirror" being the one that comes immediately to mind.

My bad.

Have you watched Star Trek? Lewdness wasn't exactly uncommon as Kirk was a womanizer throughout TOS.

Nice comment at the end, really adds to your argument.

Finally saw it. While I like it, I felt it had a bit too much of the old stuff and not enough meat in the plot. I'm a big Star Trek fan as a kid but not a Trekkie by any nature. I was just a little disappointed in the whole angle they took.

Kirk dies the same way spock did only with the obvious catch all of Kahn's blood being the cup of Christ. Quinto's "Kahn!" was almost cringe worthy. Not as bad as Vader's "no" but just didn't have the same force as the original. It felt like a spoof.
Minor gripes like that. I enjoyed myself and was engaged for everything except those first weird moments in the movie (after the opening scene). Nothing spectacular but not bad. Probably 7/10.

My point that this was a totally douchy response still stands.

Didn't Jaba get all aroused with the bikini and chain-clad Leia? Basically trying to assault her?
I didn't have a problem with that or the bikini/bra & panties in this movie.
I had a problem with Kirk in a threesome with the tail twins. 60s sex shtick <> showing Kirk in bed with 2 women.IMO

Loved the movie but I'm a bit of a Trekker, grew up with TNG. My biggest complaint was brining Nemoy back. I felt it was lazy writing and I hope they don't keep relying on him for things. Loved the Tribble and the bromance between Kirk and Spock was great. I think the scene between them was well done.BTW, just tried watching Wrath of Khan. I just couldn't get through the first 30 minutes.
Sorry, these two things are mutually exclusive.
No they aren't.

No Trekker wants to watch Spock die.

Or watch William Shatner attempt to act out grief.
Neither of which happen in the first 30 minutes.
Whoops, I thought he meant the last 30 minutes.

I have no idea where he is coming from then.
TOS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> TNG

Picard sucks. Wesley Crusher should also have been shot out of a photon tube into a dwarf star.
Wow. I think you lost all credibility with the Picard sucks comment.

It sets the tone for the remainder of the movie. Even if you don't know how deep the Spock/Kirk/McCoy relationship goes, it still gives you the idea of how worn out Kirk is.

Which gives his metaphoric "rebirth" of spirit even more impact by the ending.
I'll give it another shot, I think I watched it too close to Into Darkness.
iamsmilin --> I grew up watching the dashing, swashbuckling, ladys man Captain James T. Kirk. He was my mancrush before I knew what they were. By comparison, Picard is a stodgy cardboard cutout of what IMO a starship captain should be. Just my :2cents:
