STAR WARS: EP 7 ***SPOILER ZONE*** - Go here if you've seen it (1 Viewer)

Star Wars Fan Film - Rebel Scum - https://youtu.be/tiu2Tc2HdLo

A Rebellion pilot is hounded by death from the merciless Empire and a frozen grave, after being abandoned during the retreat of the Rebel Alliance from Hoth.

Rebel Scum pays homage to the original Star Wars trilogy; nearly all visual effects were created without the use of CGI, using time honored methods such a stop-motion animation. Shot on location in -30°C (-22°F) at Columbia Icefield in Alberta Canada.

So I guess while it was good, the hype seemed to carry the movie. Sales tapering off and while they are still #1 (and probably will be for a bit with no major movies coming soon), it seems everyone has seen it multiple times. I wonder how long they keep it in the theater. Maybe till June or so?
No way. Bet it's gone in march.
Read rumors that the dvd will be out in April or May.

That's a quick turnaround. Phantom Menace they left in theaters almost a year.

That was at strange time in the after market industry though. Video tape sales were crashing and video rentals were starting to significantly slow down and DVD's had yet to take hold.

Here are some Star Wars revenue stats

1) 1st all time domestically

2) 15th all time domestically inflation adjusted (Star Wars is #2 on this list, Empire is 12th)

3) 3rd all time world wide sales, it likely will not catch Avatar but still has a chance to catch Titanic

===================

Titanic's span of strength is amazing when you look at the numbers. They only made $28m in their first weekend of release and yet they were still pulling in $15m in their 15th week of release domestically.

It amazes me that films as bad as Titanic and Avatar top the all time gross list.

The inflation adjusted list is a little better but even there Titanic got 5th (Avatar was 14th)

Movie companies were terrified of video back then, now they realize that there's more money to be made while keeping movies in the theaters only until ticket sales dwindle and then rush out the BR while the movie is fresh in people's minds.

Have any specifics been discussed yet on #8s trailer release?

Lucas pd/mkt tells me they don't think it'll be summer...likely pre-Holday.

they are not going to step on Rogue One imo, so that initial marketing has to happen first.

They might hold the #8 trailer to debut with the Rogue One release but that might be too late.

It will certainly catch titanic at some point, even if that means during re-release years from now. That's the only reason titanic is at 2.2 billion. I think it did like 400 million worldwide second time around.

Rebels has transitioned from decent to very good as season 1 has progressed. I only have one episode to go in Season 1. Looking forward to Season 2 where my daughter tells me the story gets a little darker.

My guess would be a lot more people thought it was good than thought it was bad.

I know plenty of people that think titanic was good. They're wrong, but they're also mostly women. I'm not sure I know anyone that thinks Avatar is good.

If it's number one all time, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess there are quite a large number of them.

I was young so maybe it was just me, but Titanic was pretty impressive at the time just from the visuals of the ship sinking and all that. I certainly don't think it was a bad movie by any definition, albeit a bit lengthy.

Avatar, on the other hand, was a steaming pile of dog crap.

I said before I was very surprised at all of the love for Empire Strikes Back in this thread so I just rewatched episodes 4-6. All it did was confirm my opinion that Episode 5 was my least favorite. I much prefer ROTJ and Episode 4. Episode 7 was very good too. What part of Episode 5 was so good for you guys?

Not written or directed by George Lucas.

Luke's Insanely Stupid Plan To Rescue Han Solo from Jabba The Hutt

Let us imagine that Luke Skywalker is trying to tell you his plan to rescue Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt.

Luke: “Okay so, first we get Lando Calrissian posing as a guard inside Jabba’s Palace.”

You: “How do we do that?”

Luke: “We just get him a costume and he–just walks in.”

You: “Um, okay, say it’s that easy. So then Lando gets Han out of the carbonite and we pick them up and get away?”

Luke: “No. What happens next is that I put my lightsaber in a hidden compartment in R2-D2 and send R2-D2 and C3PO to Jabba the Hutt as gifts.”

You: “Wait, why-“

Luke: “Just listen. Next we have Leia pose as a bounty hunter arriving at Jabba’s palace with Chewbacca captured. She’s going to hand over Chewbacca to Jabba.”

You: “Wait, why? Wouldn’t that mean we would now have to rescue Han Solo, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C3PO? That just makes it more difficult, right?”

Luke: “Just go with me here. Next, Leia is going to sneak around at night and get Han Solo out of the carbonite, but get captured.”

You: “What? Why would we get everyone captured like that?”

Luke: “Now I’ll show up, use my Force powers to get in to Jabba’s fortress, get past the guards to an audience before Jabba and then use my Jedi mind trick to get Jabba to release everyone. If that doesn’t work, then I’ll get captured.”

You: “Okay, if you can just use your Force powers to get in to the palace and all the way to Jabba, then let’s just have you go in right now and get Han out.”

Luke: “No, that’s stupid. I’m going to get myself captured. Because then you see, we’ll be taken to the sarlacc pit and then, when we’re on the skiff, I’ll get sent out first and then R2-D2 will manage to get to the top of Jabba’s sail barge and shoot out my lightsaber, and then with Lando’s help, we’ll just–rescue everyone and then everything will be fine!”

You: “That is the stupidest plan I’ve ever heard of.”

Luke:“I’ve thought of everything.”

You: “Clearly you didn’t.”

The direction and tone from beginning to end felt very menacing compared to the first one. While ANH was a light hearted space adventure that left you feeling happy, Empire set out from the get go to let you know that the Empire really is a force to be reckoned with and they aren't pulling any punches in this one. You feel tension that wasn't quite there from ANH that maybe the good guys aren't going to win this time. The Empire means business. The defeat on Hoth, The Falcon unable to get away easily, Luke's failures during his Jedi training all gave the viewer a sense of worry that the characters they grew to love are quite flawed and it could cost them. When Han and Leia et al manage to elude the Empire and head to Bespin, you get the first breath of thinking maybe it'll be alright even with the ominous Boba Fett tailing them. We as the audience want to believe it'll be alright despite every sign leading to something bad. The cheery music as Lando walks them through the city to lunch and his casual manner make you think, ok its fine and then boom. Guess who's coming to lunch.

The real tension of knowing it's a trap for Luke. Seeing our heroes in a no win situation gave the viewer angst. Then we have Han the invincible, lovable rogue who was born with a horseshoe up his ### getting frozen in carbonite. Shock #2. We get Luke arriving and we think, this can't happen. Luke's gonna save them, he has to. But no. He fights Vader and Vader basically toys with him till he has no hand and is hanging over a precipice. Then the bomb drop #3. One of the greatest reveals in all of film. I Am Your Father! That was the haymaker that knocked the audience down and left them staggering. Luke's desperation as he hangs upside down pleading for Ben to save him leaves you just as desperate.

Everything after is just the cool down from the climax but we the audience felt defeated after that film and yet despite it all, there was still a glimmer of hope. That is why I consider it the Best of the series. The rollercoaster of emotions compared to the straight popcorn flick you get from ANH solidified Star Wars for me as the greatest space saga I've ever seen.

THIS is exactly why Empire is my favorite. The good guys are mostly alive at the end, but they've gotten their butts handed to them in a way very uncommon in movies. Plus...bomb drop #3...indeed the greatest bomb drop in movie history

All that and this is the movie where Vader basically asserts himself as the all time greatest movie villain. He's just so awesome in this movie. "Apology accepted..."

Not really for a first time viewer. Here are the lines

VADER: What is thy bidding, my master?

EMPEROR: There is a great disturbance in the Force.

VADER: I have felt it.

EMPEROR: We have a new enemy -- Luke Skywalker.

VADER: Yes, my master.

EMPEROR: He could destroy us.

VADER: He's just a boy. Obi-Wan can no longer help him.

EMPEROR: The Force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not

become a Jedi.

VADER: If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally.

EMPEROR: Yes. Yes. He would be a great asset. Can it be done?

VADER: He will join us or die, my master.

I finished up season 1 of Rebels and started season 2. Fabulous ending to season 1. The show just got better and better in season 1 as the story line changed from episodic to arc based.

VADER: If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally.

This is exactly I imagine conversations with jon_mx and Max Threshold go about Tim.

EMPEROR: Yes. Yes. He would be a great asset. Can it be done?

VADER: He will join us or die, my master.
Even if you've seen the movie hundreds of times and you know that Vader is Luke's father, how does this conversation give that away? Because the Emperor has heard of Skywalker, a Jedi Knight who fought against him in the Clone Wars?

I said before I was very surprised at all of the love for Empire Strikes Back in this thread so I just rewatched episodes 4-6. All it did was confirm my opinion that Episode 5 was my least favorite. I much prefer ROTJ and Episode 4. Episode 7 was very good too. What part of Episode 5 was so good for you guys?

Doesn't the emporer give away that he is his father before that scene?
Not really for a first time viewer. Here are the linesVADER: What is thy bidding, my master?

EMPEROR: There is a great disturbance in the Force.

VADER: I have felt it.

EMPEROR: We have a new enemy -- Luke Skywalker.

VADER: Yes, my master.

EMPEROR: He could destroy us.

VADER: He's just a boy. Obi-Wan can no longer help him.

EMPEROR: The Force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not

become a Jedi.

VADER: If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally.

EMPEROR: Yes. Yes. He would be a great asset. Can it be done?

I think he was saying that if you already know, you already know.

There's nothing that gives away Vader as Luke's father. Nothing.

I know this is highly contested now and memories can be fuzzy, but I'm on the side that this was at the very least highly speculated before the film was actually released. Granted there were lots of rumors and speculation and I could simply be remembering the one of a dozens that was correct, but I remember it differently. I also don't actually remember how soon after release I saw the film (it came out at the end of the school year about a month getting my driver's license and three weeks before my first ever paycheck) , but for me at least I went in to the theater looking for this scene.

When I heard the emporer say Luke was Anakin Skywalker's son I forgot that nobody knew that Vader is AS. All good

Finally saw 7. Nice homage to the original movies, felt much more like star wars than 1 through 3 ever did. Never really cared that much about the new characters but didn't mind because there were so many old characters. I'm back in. And that's what this movie did well.

I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. I mean, that's what life is, a series of down endings. All "Jedi" had was a bunch of Muppets.

Even though George Lucas turned into a heaping pile of ####, he is the creator of the greatest movie franchise in history and I thank him for it.

I'm not even supposed to be here today!

Some nits to pick

Why would Finn be clean shaven and have a decent hair cut? He was enslaved as a child and got yelled at for taking off his helmet on their own ship. He should have looked like Galifianakis.

Also does this mean there are storm trooper barbers?

And the map to Skywalker. What the ####. So he was just standing there in that same island for years with his hood over his face waiting for someone to show up and then when they do he doesn't even turn around?

Also, he looked like Galifianakis.

Why did Ren fight fair with Finn when he was mowing people down with the force? Or with Ray?

Also, explain this conversation. I'm a storm trooper. But I quit. OK, I have the Droid with the secret map to Skywalker.

And again, the map that was supposed to just be a partial map - the part in the Droid was basically the only part that mattered, right? The rest was like a huge map of everything with a dotted line that didn't go to anything at all?

Also what happened to the rebellion? They took over the Republic from the emperor. So wouldn't the storm troopers work for the rebellion led empire now? Why were they on the other side again?

But mostly the haircut thing is really bothering me.

OK, Star Wars nerds, explain to me why the map to Luke needed a dashed line on it. Wouldn't it be enough just to highlight the planet? All they'd have to do is punch in the coordinates and fly straight to it, right?
