Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (2 Viewers)

I need to know a little more backstory about the porgs before i can say.

I mean, who are their parents. What is their motivation for doing charibitable things. Have they ever stuffed underwear in the drop ceiling tiles.

I feel about the Rey actress how Chet feels about Sophie Turner.  Slightly above average at best, with no outstanding talents.  There's a dozen or two girls of her caliber in every freshman class.
Every time I see the commercial for Battlefront 2, I find myself wishing they could have cast the adult version of that girl for Rey.

Love the video as she had great points.

However, I am concerned about the sanity of a woman with no sheets and a large porg on her bed, with Christmas lights tacked  up at chest height. :oldunsure:
Well, it's a "TV set".  I wonder how much this chick makes.

Really disappointed in TFA, loved Rogue One, was pleasantly surprised by this one. It had some flaws but I thought it was loads better than TFA. It did feel like they took some of the many criticisms that people like myself had of TFA and improved things quite a bit.

Going "will you or won't you kill young hitler?" and thereby creating hitler was a little meh, and I feel they could have come up with something better as an origin for Kylo. I think I agree with Mark Hamill that that wasn't his Luke Skywalker but it worked well enough to keep the movies going. Personally, the Thrawn trilogy and a few of the books after that will always be the true sequel's in my head and I can live with there being other movies.

Too much to catch up on in the thread - did anybody feel they were just pretty much wrapping up the threads that needed to be followed up on while clearing the decks for a new story?

That's an outstanding read.
That was a pretty good read.   Doesn't mean I still wouldn't have rather seen him somehow come back and start kicking some ### again.

Given how they wrote the Force Awakens, it does make sense the way that episode 8 went...

It hurts that we don't have any context of how Luke's Jedi Academy was going..  how Snoke ever got in contact with Ben to begin with...  etc.

I understand they are only giving the amount of backstory that they want..  but it doesn't feel sufficient enough to justify how everything got here.

I'm REALLY hoping for some backstory in 9. In particular the Knights of Ren. I feel like they are going to be Rey's training. She takes each of them out, and as she does we learn about how Snoke corrupted Ben and how Ben corrupted his chosen Knights. Then after she cuts her teeth on them, Rey is ready for Ren.

No. It felt like they disregarded anything that was set up before and set off in a new direction of their own choosing.

This is my biggest complaint.  It seems we are right where we were at the end of Empire Strikes Back, essentially, just with different names and faces playing different roles.  But so much has changed and happened since then, how did we get back to where we started?

At the end of Empire, we have Han in carbonite, a rebel fleet (Luke was in a medical frigate that was part of that fleet) Darth Vader and the Emperor still alive. We also had a Luke Skywalker is pretty much a full on Jedi Knight judging how he returns at the beginning of ROTJ.

Where do we stand now after 8? The emperor equivalent is not only dead by the hands of his apprentice, that apprentice has taken over the role as emperor (that didn't happen in the original trilogy). Rey is not trained, but had some propensity in the force. Let's hope they don't show here skimming an old text at the beginning of 9 and then show her with complete mastery of the force. That at least there's more to her training than that.

Also, we have no rebellion. We have a spark. We have the tiniest bit of hope. We have a few dozen people and an unnaturally tall Sulustan (Sulustans are about 3 feet tall and one copiloted the Falcon with Lando in ROTJ but the one standing in the Falcon at the end of 8 is almost 6 foot :nerd:  ).

And while the movie didn't do this, the real world did, we have lost the Princess and the general, leaving a fly boy to learn to be a general. Has and Lando were generals, but they also reported to Mon Mothma and Admiral Ackbar. Poe is going to be the outright leader.

We also have Finn. Still trying to figure out his role other than to add to the diversity. He's JAG. Anyone could've moved the plot along the way he did. If they killed him it would be perfect. Get to know the guy for a couple of movies, but he's really not all that special and then off him in a GRRM way. That would be his biggest contribution to the franchise. I mean other than killing Phasma who had what, 6 total lines between 2 movies?

I think they are equally likely to bang as they are fight... which is lame

I should have clarified that the start of 8 and the end of Empire are similar.  We have an supreme bad guy leader we are not sure of the back story for.  We have a second in command who is a strong force dude.  We have a hope for the Jedi future who needs more training (and goes to the last known Jedi on some remote planet to get some training).  We have a small rebellion (the fleet shown at the start of 8 looks very similar to the fleet shown at the end of Jedi, you know during that shot for shot remake of the Emperor's room in the second death star).  Of course the details are different, but I wish they would have tried less hard to make it feel so much like the old star wars they kept doing the same thing over.  That was cool in TFA to make it feel like a Star Wars movie again (after the disaster of the prequels that didn't feel like Star Wars to many), but I don't need to see the Hoth Battle remade to remind me they are paying homage to the originals.

I would think they fast forward 10-15 years for part IX. I don’t think there’s any story to tell if they pick up right where TLJ left off. Plus it’s an easier out to kill off Leia in the opening scroll and also have the rebellion grow to more than the current membership of 5 with a long time passing between episodes.

It's the same guy.

That's a good call. Because in order to do this next movie right, they have to have something to stand up to the Empire with. They have to move that spark to an inferno in order to have a chance.

Actually, we don't have a supreme bad guy leader at the end of 8. Snoke's dead.

But yeah, I get it. They are walking that fine line between making the old die hards happy and attracting a new crop of fans. My biggest complaint about TFA is that it's basically, "OK, let's see if we can figure out how to blow up yet another death star." I sincerely hoped that by paying homage to the first TWO times they did that, they would move the story in a new direction. But alas, they took two moves to pay homage. Maybe in this next one, we can get something more refreshing.

Read my post you quoted again, I clarified "start of 8" where Snoke is alive and well.

I get why they are trying to make the die hards happy, but it is strange to me the decisions they make to do it.  Instead of keeping 2 second omages in (like saying I have a bad feeling about this, yeah, I get BB8 says it, but just put it in there) makes more sense to me than recreating entire scenes from the originals (Hoth Battle, Emperor's throne room, destroy another death star, etc etc).  Honestly, after the Jakku scene in TFA, I think they did all they needed to do.

But, as long as they keep pumping these things out, I'll keep giving them my $10.

Exactly. It's a way for me to hold onto my youth and I'm never letting go
