I'm getting into a keeper league this season with a few buddies. 12 teams, most have not done a keeper league before. There has been some debate about the keeper rules. Right now, the most outspoken owner has said that we should have to keep 2 players and there would be no penalty the following year. I know a lot of leagues have the rule that when you keep a player you lose that draft pick the following year. A few guys have mentioned this, but no one has really taken a stand. For those of you in keeper leagues, what have you found to be the most fair or best way of keeping 2-3 players?

Why do you care what the rules are since they are the same for everybody? If thats what he made then why not go with it? Do you have your draft picks yet? If you get LT or SJ it favors you next year to do it his way. What pick do you have and who are you leaning towards? Maybe it will be good for you to leave it alone for next year.

We have a 3 keeper IDP league. We are only allowed to keep 1 player from a position and 1 must be from the D (we start 1 DL, LB, and DB). You are only allowed to keep the player for 3 years. If you don't retain 1, 2, or 3 players from last year's roster, you receive certain draft picks. An extra 7th, extra 4th, and then an extra 3rd. The league hasn't had any problems with it.

12 teams, 5 keepers, max 2 per position, no draft pick penalties. Keepers must be announced a month prior to our draft. 60 players off the board already. It's worked for us, 6 years running.
I've got the 7 pick, serpentine, and I'm hoping to get Bush, Westbrook or Parker with my first pick. It is a ppr league. Just because they are the same for everyone doesn't necessarily mean they are fair for everyone. I think it depends greatly on your draft position. Just like you said, if you have the first or second pick and get to keep LT or Jackson, then you are are at a greater advantage than the rest of the league. That is obviously not fair for everyone. I've also seen some leagues where you can't keep anyone from the first two rounds. Has anyone done something like that?
Our league is considering a move from redraft to keeper beginning with the 2008 season. We are going to do a "keep 2 players" and every player has to be available in the redraft every other year. I.e., you get him for two seasons if you drafted him or 2+ seasons if he was picked up as a free agent.
We are in the process of ironing out rules for that first season. What works best with regard to:
1. Draft slot order. We currently do random order. Does that still work for keeper leagues? I saw something earlier in this thread that the team with the lowest scoring keepers gets 1st pick. Not sure if that would work with only two keepers that eventually get thrown back into the player pool. Could see a lot teams keeping worthless players to get a better pick.
2. Serpentine or straight draft?
3. Draft picks for keeping players. We are considering the first player kept is the 1st round pick, second is the 2nd. Also considering losing a pick in the round the kept player was previously drafted in.
What other rules are we missing that require documentation? We are going to allow offseason trades and trades for draft picks.

We keep just 1 player, this makes the upcoming draft much more exciting with "stud players" still available. We too have a 2 year max. for keeping players. We do an auction draft so what that keeper player was auctioned off for the year before goes against your starting cap. It's worked out well 4 seasons going.

There is a 1,000 different ways to do a keeper league...I would come up with several options in terms of trading rules, number of keepers, if you use a lose draft pick for the round your keeper was drafted, etc. and email those options to your league members to vote on & go with the majority.

We play a keeper version where you can keep anyone from your year end roster, but they will cost you a draft pick three rounds higher than they were drafted the year before.
It keeps the top talent (1st three rounds) from being kept so they are always available again.
But it rewards the SHARK who drafted those elite players at 17 or 18 and held them till they were ready to shine by letting them keep that player for a few years.

I have a 10 team up to 4 keepers PPR, IDP League. No limitations and no penalties for who you keep. If a team is weak and doesn't have 4 keepers they get to pick (in order of draft) free agents until they have 4 players on their roster. The draft itself is a straight draft, no serpentine. We have done this for seven years. Most important thing is to set your rules with the consensus of the league on the major points and live by them. Sounds like all of our leagues are a little different and we all enjoy the leagues we are in.
