State Of The Board - 2018 (1 Viewer)

not sure how long I have been around...used to get the cheat sheets faxed to me...so probably quite some time (20+ years I'm guessing)...don't consider myself a regular "poster" in the FFA but do come in quite often....mostly hide/hang out in the Mock Draft Forum now and take an occasional dip in the pool.....but I'm mostly just a 49 year old male, with as wife of 20+ years, father of two adult children (one boy/one girl), one dog, own my house, keep up my yard...I golf, I drink, I'm a little overweight, I'm not a perv but I like to look at pretty women, I play poker....and I'm addicted to fantasy football...so over time.....this place pretty much checked off all my boxes....I could probably be the poster boy for the avg dude in here....minus all the politics and nerdy type stuff and the fact that I don't have a ton of money...but I did out kick my coverage on my wife so I got that going for me....anyway

1. I feel like the recent changes are because for some reason now (more so than before), the powers that be feel that this board and every comment made in it are a reflection of the powers that be...seems like you used to be able to have the "disclaimer" of "the views and opinions expressed on these boards are not that of the owner, blah, blah, blah"...but now the powers that be feel that it is more a reflection of them....."oh my god, those nasty owners at Footballguys let their members have a who is hottest poll, can you believe it..?..what kind of place are they running over there"....I'll admit, I actively searched out the hottest polls....didn't comment much, but did vote...doesn't make me a bad guy, doesn't make me a bad husband, doesn't mean I don't respect women (even though that seems to be the message I am getting)....for me as a 49 year old male that still has some testosterone running through his system, it was just enough to get my fix in while also maybe seeing if somebody knew what was wrong with my lawn mower or maybe getting a little parenting advice when my kids went sideways, or whats the best way to play a suited ace/deuce...

2. the premature morality policing in the cheating thread I thought was out of bounds...

3. it also makes my skin crawl when someone busts out the "if you don't like it here go find some place you like" attitude...I've never really seen that come across well, even if you try to sprinkle it with "I just want you to find some place that makes you happy"...for may of us, THIS was THAT place....we didn't/don't want to go elsewhere....

4. I felt most in here were kind of like me...(except they also like politics/nerdy stuff/ and have an abundance of cash)....and things like the hottest threads were just far enough down the road that I didn't need to go anywhere else....it was nice talking about the smoke shows that pop up on Survivor in the Survivor threads or the ladies on The Bachelor and how they maybe were hot and crazy, etc....always felt most of that was pretty harmless, but I guess those will be gone now too...not to be able to talk about/judge/evaluate the women on a show like The Bachelor (which is what that show is all about)...is kind of crazy..oh yeah...they are looking for love.....I guess maybe we can still chat in those threads but it will be walking on egg shells and look out for the po po with every comment...the ARZ Ron and NSJ threads also seemed entertaining for some without crossing lines...fake names. etc...

5. not a politics guy but was glad to see them get their own home....heck, it even started taking over this thread....

6. I've always been one of those guys that has always thought they were right and that my idea/opinion was the best one in the room....and I will say thankfully this place has humbled me in the past and made me be a better person and see things differently, and actually completely changed my opinion in some cases...

I'm not real cool with the new attitude... I think in a Free For All Forum on a football message board, there has to be some room for casual locker room talk and girly calendars/posters on the wall....or else you never should have had a forum like that on your football message board to begin with.....not sure what you were expecting of your initial target population/audience...I think for the most part 98% of the stuff was being excellent to each other...I also don't think that many of the dudes who participated in the hottest threads are bad people or were really participating with any ill intent...its an anonymous board, nobody should really be offended....we are all big boys and girls....if you didn't like them, don't click on them....and don't judge the people that do, or that "own" the company....feels a little like the chalk line we get when a football coach gets fired.....the owner never really wants to tell us why he fired the coach, its always just....."we are moving in a different direction as an organization".....have always loved this board, but I guess I'm being told I still have some growing up to do...

Its funny. I can tell my own wife an actress is hot (and she can tell me an actor is hot) without any fear of retribution but I cant say it on a message board dedicated to sports gambling.
I told my wife we're not allowed to discuss if someone's hot or not on the forum anymore.  She said, "huh?"

Even the poor, objectified women (who also happen to like attention for their looks) are dumbfounded.

Also, may the Lord open.

Sorry didn't read all the thread, but I do find it a little ironic that a website/forum whose main purpose is objectifying football players with rankings in a fantasy realm is upset about objectifying women in anonymous polls.

The mothers of those players might see those rankings and object to their sons being objectified.

Thanks @Stinkin Ref   I appreciate your thoughts there.

One quick thing on the first one. I think you're right. This board is part of FBG and is therefore a reflection on me. There is a pretty big disconnect there I think for some.

I'd ask the question - how would the board respond if we eliminated screen names and every poster were somehow required to post with their real name and city where they lived?

I'd be pretty surprised if many people would be cool with that. Having a real name attached makes things different. Even if you're not the one saying something, you're in or around the conversation.

Same way for me. I can't pass responsibility off to someone else. This isn't a faceless network where you can throw up some lame cover their butt "the views and opinions don't actively represent the position of ..." thing. I'm the owner and even though I'm not the one saying it directly, it reflects on me if it's allowed on the site.

And don't worry. I know full well we'd have few people here if we could have some sort of magic and made everyone use their real names. That's not happening. But thinking about what it might be like is a little insight into what it's like for us.

1 Timothy 2:9-10

Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.

Matthew 5:28

But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

We're all sinning guys.  Nothing else needs to be said.  God wins.

In response to the bold, the board would be a lot better because  there would be no more hiding behind anonymity for some people to troll or post nonsense, etc.  I would have no problem putting my name behind posts as a middle-aged male who occasionally posts about the attractiveness of women in yoga pants, among other mostly male topics.

I would be ok with my name being associated with posts and thoughts that aren't strictly G-rated,  and from the sound of it, so would most people here.  The issue is the really odd push to make a football-related off topic forum be G rated.

If we are looking for more ways to build this community, how about more events like the t-shirt thread,  @[icon]‘s whiskey tasting, and the chess thread? No politics, no name calling, no arguing, and it’s a great way to build the bond between posters. Maybe there are other things we could do throughout the year that is similar. We’ve talked about doing a Christmas exchange. I could probably set that up and run it.

I’m no expert on this sort of thing, but it seems like threads/events that get good participation and allow us to get to know each other a little better are a good way to keep the camaraderie we’ve built over all these years.

Thanks. I don't think most would agree with you that everyone would be cool with using their real names. But maybe they would.

They might have reservations for privacy purposes which is reasonable. But I really doubt many here rely on anonymity to hide the fact that they find women attractive or to keep their rep G rated.

you'd still be selling those boats if you took away the anonymity.....

I guess my biggest thing is you are basically saying anybody that liked or god forbid participated in the hottest threads or similar threads are in some way bad people and you don't want to associate with "that kind"........you can spin an answer to that anyway you want but that is the message that comes across.....you'll probably say something along the lines of "well if that's how you take it, then blah blah blah...but that's not the intent or what we are saying"....but fact is the message is still the same...

How about running a chess tournament?  @timschochet

one way we could build community would be to have all of us kick in and write a sequel to mr ishida we could call it ishida 2 hes back and hes pissed and then here is the kicker we would write it like a  giant mad lib that like the original is about 1500 pages long it will be awesome to fill in 1500 pages of blanks to make a funny story and then maybe at christmas time shuke and gm can read it all in a youtube video it will rule and bam community take that to the bank brohans

Do you feel the political forum/threads are a reflection of you and FBG too?

mr swc was my old man and i would never use a comma take that to the bank brohan

"Joe, I would like to make a comment on your board that this intelligent, successful, and charming young woman looks particularly stunning in her pair of black yoga pants and I would like to begin relations of all kinds with her immediately.  Can you let me know if you agree with this sentiment before I make my thoughts clear on the matter on your message board?"

:lmao:   JFC

Inmates are running the asylum.  Did I just read that Political Bar Fights are worth trying to save compared to PG pictures getting axed?  Reasoning for the yoga and 50+ comments completely skipped over again?

I was already on the way out; it's down to just an occasional Westworld/GOT/TWD comment and to check on any new advances in cable tv stealing technology.

Oh, and to lurk and tail in the wagering thread.  Is there a magical way to move the wagering thread and all it's posters to someplace cool?

Can we please have $@#?Toupee's handle changed?  I wouldn't feel comfortable saying that in church.

Guys, this sort of thing is not unprecedented. It’s happened before. Listening to the American Pie parody about the FFA that I posted a few pages back is an amazing chronicling of stories and moderator actions from the 2001 to 2006 time frame (over 12 years ago). One of the events referenced in the song is when the name of the long running “Hooters” thread was changed to the “Mammaries” thread, and then ultimately axed. Everyone was complaining about that, as they are complaining today about the Yoga pants thread.

Same as day one...

It might be same as day one, but it still makes as little sense as it did back then.

I am still confused on the consistency.

Joe gave his reasons for chopping the relatively polite and benign threads like the yoga and over 50, but why is the constant nastiness in political threads allowed such a long leash?

There is more non excellence in those threads in a single day than in the entire lifetime of the threads that were chopped.

That was also stupid. And I believe that active users and posts are way down from those days.

I certainly would have no issue making my name public just because I think women are hot. Wtf planet are we on here? Most people know my name on here anyway. I post comments on Facebook and Instagram about hot chicks and use my real name. I'm supposed to be ashamed because I find women hot?

Basically this.

Its Joe's board in the sense that he owns it. So he has the "right" to make the rules whatever he wants.
100% this.

I once started a thread on Vasovagal Syncope -- basically an involuntary reaction to pain or being sufficiently uneasy that you pass out.  Turns out it's a fairly common thing and we had a great thread going where people were talking about their own experience.

But one of the mods saw the title and thought it was being cute with "vag" or something like that.  So they deleted it.

I asked about it via PM and was told the above.  And that was that.  I let it go.

We're guests.  They get to make the rules and it would be awesome if people quit whining and arguing about it.

This makes way too much sense.

I'll say this... bumping some of the old threads truly makes me appreciate the change to limited nest quotes.

God those threads are awful on mobile.

FFAWT is pretty much it's own board at this point.  I think Lamby, Stu, and me are the only ones who post in there and also in other threads.

So you didn’t continue to ask them for a better explanation over and over, tell them they are ridiculous, bring it up in 20 unrelated threads, tell them about other posts with “vag” that they HAVE to delete in order to be consistent, or start a thread asking why it was deleted so everyone else could join your crusade? Pfft, what are you, some kind of vag?

Actually, it was changed to "Beautiful Women".  And it still exists I believe.

Well, mammaries may have been a transitional title. Evidence being the reference in the song. Would love a link to the thread if it’s still around.
