How is it "processed?"Listen, I'm sure it's not Grade A, but it's just shaved beef. You're eating more processed meat if you eat deli ham.People eating processed "meat" is what's gross.Insein said:Yea that's just gross.B-Deep said:who microwaves steakums?SmoovySmoov said:Mmmmmmmmm. About once every 5 years, I'll buy a box of steak'ums fry up some peppers and onions, fry up the entire box, glob in a crapload of cheese whiz and a healthy squirt of ketchupand put it on a nice big bun.
So disgusting, yet so good.
Philly cheesesteaks with ketchup are not uncommon in Philly. Adds a nice acid dimension.About once every 5 years, I'll buy a box of steak'ums fry up some peppers and onions, fry up the entire box, glob in a crapload of cheese whiz and a healthy squirt of ketchupand put it on a nice big bun.

I thought I was the only one that did this. One box = one big sammich.About once every 5 years, I'll buy a box of steak'ums fry up some peppers and onions, fry up the entire box, glob in a crapload of cheese whiz and a healthy squirt of ketchup and put it on a nice big bun.

Me too. Hadn't had one in probably 20 years and got a box about a year ago and could not believe how disgusting they were, in every conceivable way. Just horrendous.AAABatteries said:Big fan as a kid - now no.
Do yourself a favor and next time you do this, put the Steakumms down, buy the equivalent weight in deli roast beef, chop it to desired consistency, and do everything else the same. True. One is greasy and disgusting and the other actually tastes good. You rough chop some roast beef and throw it in the pan with the onions (and peppers if desired) and fry/brown it off before tossing in the Whiz and you have an infinitely better approximation of a real Philly cheesesteak than you could possibly achieve using Steakumms. Not the same at all. I think I didn't articulate that well. Don't fry up peppers and onions and then put it on rare deli roast beef. Cook the roast beef the same way you do the Steakumms to get it browned and hot first, then add the cheese. It comes out similarly, only light years better. Not only that, but you're getting much better quality meat and for probably the same price or cheaper. Even if it's a little more $$, it's more than worth it.Roast beef sammich different from steak ums.Not the same at all. Exactly. Get some nice red (medium rare) London broil sliced roast beef (Boars Head) and put it in a hot pan....slice up some peppers, onions, mushrooms, provolone cheese....toast up a hoagie roll...smear a tad of mayo on it...chop up some tomatoes too. Put it all together for a hot roast beef melt. I also will dash some A1 on top to finish it off.I think I didn't articulate that well. Oh I do that...but there's a time and place for Steak Ums too. Like at 3am and I'm going through my fridge/freezer and see a box of faux meat sheets that will fill the void in my belly and I dont have any roast beef on hand.I buy Steak Ums maybe once every 3 years or so, so its not like they're a staple in my freezer...but when they are I enjoy em.Do yourself a favor and next time you do this, put the Steakumms down, buy the equivalent weight in deli roast beef, chop it to desired consistency, and do everything else the same. Microwave
Q Can I use a microwave to cook Steak-umm® Sliced Steaks?
A No. Steak-umm® Sliced Steaks should always be cooked on a stove in a non-stick or greased frying pan.
I did once. But I felt so guilty I threw it out.Do folks in Philly ever use them to make faux cheesesteaks? Or is that too great a culinary sin?Sautee onions and bell pepper.
More fat and less protein than steak but not as bad as I thought.I don't know what cuts they use to form these sheets of beef, but there's no way they are wasting ribeye on it. My guess is that it's finely minced/liquified round flattened out into sheets with a binder to hold it all together.Probably haven't had them in 30 years, but they're just shaved ribeye, right?
ETA: Nevermind on the binder. All beef baby. Surely round, but beef

I wouldn't get terribly excited.Never heard of them. Will try if i see them.
Yeah...but if you do pick some up, season the living #### out of them cuz they're pretty bland.I wouldn't get terribly excited.Never heard of them. Will try if i see them.
For people that like them or maybe even can stomach them, they had to develop a liking for it back when their tastes hadn't developed much yet. Be it as a small child or a desperate college student.
I tried Manwich again not too long ago. My daughter liked it but I was :X :Loved these when I was a kid and didn't know better.
Oh man ... Don't ruin my memories of Manwich. Next you'll be spoiling Jeno's frozen pizza for me, tooI tried Manwich again not too long ago. My daughter liked it but I was :X :Loved these when I was a kid and didn't know better.
