Going up against the Colts Defense, the Steelers have an opportunity to score everytime they have the ball. When they're on offense, they have to think like the Colts in this game. On defense, all you have to do against Manning is frustrate him by taking away the deep pass. If you give him the 4 yard pass everytime, eventually he'll push one downfield into double coverage.

Personally, I felt that Edge was the key factor in the 1st game. Pitt just couldn't seem to stop him from getting 4 yds a pop and moving the chains when they needed him to. He was able to make the most out of nearly every carry and even the times I thought we had him, I looked up and it was 2nd and 5 or 2nd and 4. Frustrating.

This game will be won or lost in the trenches, as most NFL games are. In their last game the Steelers misjudged the Colts speed on D and factor in the crowd noise the Steelers just didn't get off the ball as quickly as Indy did. That killed the Steelers running and passing game. Getting Marvel Smith back will help but in order to win the game the Steelers must still find a way to give their RBs running room and give Roethlisberger time to find WRs. That may be easier said than done, we'll see what Russ Grimm can do with the O-line.Defensively the Steelers actually played pretty well from the 2nd quarter on in the last game. Most of the Colts scoring drives started in Steelers territory. Hopefully the Colts drives will start on the other side of the 50 in this game. Again though, if they can't get pressure on Manning (Porter & Haggans specifically), it will be a long day.I think you'll see a pretty good effort from the Steelers on both sides of the ball, Cowher is a master motivator and being a 10 point dog plays right into that. I'm just not sure it will be enough to beat a talented, well-rested Colts team playing in the Dome.

I am not going to get into the Palmer injury debate but if you are a Steeler's fan when it comes to the Colt game, I would be worried. Palmer's only pass was a 66 yd completion to Henry. Steelers defense might have adjusted at half time but we are talking Kitna not Manning. The Steelers only hope is Manning and company come out rusty, but after the Colts start in the pre-season and how they turned it on in the regular season makes me wonder if they will be rusty. Thinking you can run the Bus all day long and slow down the tempo of the game, if Indy can score quick, which they are capable of doing, they won't need time. If Pits wants to stay in this game, no turnovers, and no stupid plays. Trick on-side kicks that fail, will turn any momentum to Indy. If Indy makes this a shoot out then Big Ben can't turn over the ball. That all said, Indy will win this game, barring a Manning injury.

I saw an interesting segment on how to beat the Colts recently, and the premise involved pass, pass, pass to try to outscore them, as any failed drives could quickly get your team behind. Then add in some runs to get them off balance, but teams this year were too predictable in their play calling and the Colts had an advantage. Teams would try to run early and only pass late, and by then it was too late and the Colts could hang back in coverage and not have to worry about it.

The logic was that the Colts secondary was weaker and the Colts run defense stronger, so trying to take the air out of the ball early to keep Peyton off the field was playing into the Colts' hands.

So the conclusion was try to win 41-38 or 38-35, 'cause the Colts are going to score a lot and you need to maximize your scoing chances.

I agree - I think their secondary is much weaker than their rush defense. The Steelers need to take a page from the Patty's playoff playbook, they should use the run as a decoy and pass all day long, no matter what the lead is. Everytime the Pats beat us, its because they tear our secondary up, even in the fourth quarter with a big lead, the Pats will still throw, because teams don't expect them to. Ben can throw 40 a game, he proves that in our loss to the Bengals, the coaching staff holds the reins on that. I think they will open it up this weekend and early. This game comes down our defenses ability to get pressure on Peyton. Peyton might be smart at the line in calling audibles and he can throw deep when he has time, but whenever any team gets pressure in his face, he folds, like the Steelers with home field advantage. He's horrible, if they had a passer rating for when a QB is under pressure, he wouldn't rank too high.Win or lose, this is going to be a great game. I thought the last one was great minus two plays (Peytons first pass for 80yd TD and Cowhers onside kick to open the 2nd half). Its the Super Bowl in my eyes. Whoever wins this game - wins the Super Bowl. These two teams are far and above the best two well rounded teams in the NFL. I can't wait!!!!

brilliant. if cowher was only that aggressive of a coach. sadly, cowher is one of those "we stick with what got us here" coaches, which telegraphs the game plan and has led to us being beat 4 times at home in the AFC title game. Cowher is just not ballsy enough to abandon the run, run, throw gameplan in a big game. I love Cowher as a coach and wouldnt trade him for anyone short of belicheck, but his inability to come up with good one off gameplans has hurt us deep in the playoffs.

Relying on Kordell too much in 1997 led him to throw 3 INTs and fumble once. They lost by 3 to the Broncos.The Steelers' offense and defense did fine in 2001, but giving up 14 points on special teams blunders is a recipe for disaster.

And the defense didn't show up to play last year, which made him rely on Roethlisberger - a worn out rookie - too much.

I'd hardly say those losses were the result of a boring gameplan.

I can't help but be forced to watch Jawdrool pacing the sidelines like a mental patient when my team plays the Stillers....Jr. I've tried writing the major networks and lobbying against Billy's hatchet face from being broadcast but apparently, like a bad car crash, I am told that people are drawn to watching him act like a caveman on crack.

The shifting 3-4 defense. D-line shifs this way and that, LBs drop in to show blitz only backing out to cover a deep hook zone, safetys up, then back then the line shifts back the other way. Manning is forced to FINALLY make his audible at the line of scrimmage and that's when your in the box safety falls back, your back safety comes up, all 4 LBs back up. Manning snaps the ball and tries to figure out where the pressure is coming from, but all the LBs are back, one safety's deep and the other is spying James. Where is the...

Leave Peyton on the sideline for about 8:30 to plan and scheme while Bettis pounds it up the middle, not Parker. No, Parker comes in late in the 1st half when the Ds legs are starting to burn. Then again in the mid 3rd-mid 4th quarter when the D is sucking wind. Then the last 7:00, with a 10 point lead, put Bettis back in to chew the clock down to 1:30 on the clock and the Colts needing two scores.

You can't run the no huddle when the home team is pumping crowd noise through speakers. On offense, the Steelers are going to have to be efficient, play their game, and take advantage of every opportunity they have.

Mixing up coverages and disguising blitzes is really the only way they'll be able to contain the Colts offense, and they did a nice job of it in their first meeting after giving up the long TD. People forget that the game was only 13-7 with 30 second left in the first half and only 16-7 at halftime because of Roethlisberger's INT. They gave up 4 scoring drives that started in their own territory. The onside kicked all but ended it, and the way the Steelers' offense played that day it wouldn't have mattered, but the defense is good enough to keep the Steelers in the game.

I have nothing against the Steelers guy -- stop being a sensitive woman. I actually like Cowher a lot.I also think Seattle blows out Washington, Denver squeaks by NE and Carolina takes Chicago. And I've said that in other threads too.

I thought Mark Schlereth made an interesting observation this morning on "Mike and Mike".  His idea would be for the Steelers to go no-huddle on offense in order to keep the Colts from rotating through their defensive alignments and to force them into a single formation, IIRC.  It didn't matter if the Steelers passed or ran the football, as long as they maintained a no-huddle setup.

brilliant. if cowher was only that aggressive of a coach. sadly, cowher is one of those "we stick with what got us here" coaches, which telegraphs the game plan and has led to us being beat 4 times at home in the AFC title game. Cowher is just not ballsy enough to abandon the run, run, throw gameplan in a big game. I love Cowher as a coach and wouldnt trade him for anyone short of belicheck, but his inability to come up with good one off gameplans has hurt us deep in the playoffs.

We thought we were a pass happy team with Maddox and Mularkey. We are not. Granted, that identity crisis was during pretty much an entire season, so maybe changing up for a single game plan might work. My gut tells me that you gotta do what got you there. 60:40 runass.

I can't help but be forced to watch Jawdrool pacing the sidelines like a mental patient when my team plays the Stillers....Jr. I've tried writing the major networks and lobbying against Billy's hatchet face from being broadcast but apparently, like a bad car crash, I am told that people are drawn to watching him act like a caveman on crack.

Believe me, if I had the choice, I'd rather have razor blades slit my pupils. Unfortunately, its hard to predict when your shower-every-twentieth-day-coach rears his ugly mug on camera.

Good luck with the Colts. You may want to fasten a spitoon-like basin around Coward's neck. They're predicting 4" of drool this weekend.

As an aside, I reminded of Steelers games years ago when Bubby Brister was braking thorugh as a starter and the incessant camera pans to his momma in the stands. I'll take Cowher over Momma Brister.

I thought Cowher had a pretty good offensive game plan against the Bengals. Certainly not "same old Steelers". The flea-flicker (or whatever you want to call it) put the stake in the heart of Bengals. I loved it.
