Steelers D being good vs pass is fool's gold (1 Viewer)

For anyone worried about rolling out Alex Smith,Kelce, or Tyreek Hill this week vs Steelers "vaunted" pass defense, take a look at who they have played thus far this year:

Week 1: Kizer

Week 2: Bradford/Keenum (Not sure if Bradford was knocked out of that game or didn't start)

Week 3: Glennan

Week 4: Flacco

Week 5: Bortles

and the WRs they faced are even MORE puke worthy.

This week will be the real test and my bet is that smith and he KC passing game get the best of Pitt's defense.

Interesting thread.  What do you mean by fools gold?  It's not like they've been tearing things up in fantasy.  I doubt anyone is considering starting them at KC.

Agreed though I will say the Steelers front 7 is pretty good and their secondary improved.  Terrible matchup this week and more coming down the stretch so they are only worthy as a streaming defense but fools gold may be harsh

Heard an incredible stat that Bortles went 0 for 1 in the second half. Why throw when you can run the ball? Tyreek Hill might be a decent play this week, but I'd expect KC to run the wheels off Hunt against a porous run defense.

No I wouldn't consider starting them ever really.

What im saying is that a lot of people are fading smith and tyreek hill BC when you look at the stats it seems like the steeler's Pass d is really good.  They rank as the best defense vs the Pass on yahoo.  But when you dig deeper and look at their opponents they haven't faced any real offenses yet.

I'm not a fan of doing this but take away the 90 yd.TD in trash time and then look at the numbers...
Watch the tape of the entire Bears game and the entire Jax game and then tell me what you see in the Steelers run defense. Try not to puke up your dinner.

I believe OP is more about starting Alex Smith against Steelers D.

I was hesitant to pick up Smith as a bye week replacement because Steelers D is ranked #1 most difficult against QBs on ESPN, then I looked at the QBs they have faced and will be starting Smith with confidence.

I watched Fournette and Ivory beat them into submission. Ivory is honestly the perfect compliment to Fournette because after Fournette is done beating the #### out of you, Ivory steps in and picks up right where he left off. Facing them must be a huge pain in the ###. There was a point in the game where Fournette took it to the edge, stiff armed a dude into the ground and then motioned to a defender 10 yards out to come and hit him. It was beautiful to watch.

But as for the OP.. without Kelce, Conley and Wilson this week you have to downgrade Smith. He's gotten into a rhythm with these dudes, it's essentially his entire receiving corps.

You should be saying why throw the ball when your defense can score two TDs in 3 minutes.   The Steelers offense had crazy time of possession in the 3rd quarter, something like 13 minutes vs 2 and still was outscored by 10 points.   For most of the game the defense was actually doing okay against the run and in the 3rd quarter the Steelers were leading and the defense had just held the Jags to a 3 and out.  Had the Steelers scored a TD on the ensuing drive the Jaguars would have been down by 11 and Bortles would have had to throw.

Instead the Jags defense gets two pick-6's and there was no need to throw the ball.   Yes the 90 yard run was awful but by that time the Steelers were down 23-9, the offense had turned the ball over 5 times and there was about 3 minutes left in the game.  No excuse but it is kind of natural to suffer breakdowns under those circumstances.

Don't get me wrong, the Steelers run defense has issues but I don't think they were the main or even a big reason for the loss.   That said I think Hunt and West are gong to have a field day this week because the Steelers are finally facing a decent QB and they're going to need to defend both the run and the pass.

This game could get ugly quick.

Yup.  I was flat out wrong.  Now I can safely say the steeers Pass defense is actually good since they shut down a very good passing offense.  My bad!

AND, my own analysis wrecked me as I confidently started tyreek vs the steelers and left john brown on my bench in a great matchup.

When I first saw tyreek' matchup on paper I decided I was going to start brown.  It was only when I started dogging and I saw who the steelers had face when I reversed course.  I still think my thinking was correct though.
