Steelers letting Rainey Run loose. (1 Viewer)

Seems #22 was on the field quite a bit. It's like the new Offensive Coach is trying to find the best spot for the speedy RB/wr. I was surprised how much Chris played and the style that he was used in. At Florida he carried between the tackles. In Pitt, he's going to create mismatches, won't get the ball every down but could put up good stats while taking advantage of those 10-12 touches a game. Looks promising.

???He was below average at everything...and he fumbled.
My post was not about production. My post was about opportunity. As in, the Steelers seem to be giving Rainey a big one. Again, I would like to point out that I didn't say #22 had a good game. My post went on to say that the way the staff used him was out of character for Rainey when he was at Florida, thus taking advantage of Rainey's strengths. but before I end this post, I'd again like to point out my first post in this thread said nothing about productivity on the filed that occurred this evening.

It looks like they'll be playing Mendenhall earlier than they probably should and Redman's injury isn't as big of a concern as it was a few days ago. Add on the fact that Dwyer is the 3rd RB in front of Rainey and I don't see many chances. I expect Dexter McCluster, not Darren Sproles, type of usage and production.

Where are you getting this 10-12 touches a game from?? Id be surprised if he averaged 7 touches per game which would still put him at over 100 for the season.

The whole point of preseason is to give scrubs an opportunity. Rainey got one and he failed to capitalize on it.

He will be a benchwarmer at best this year. I'll be surprised if he gets 10-12 touches for the season.

I don't remember the exact quote but the NBC announcers mentioned that Ben's first reaction to him in training camp was wondering how he was gonna block anybody, and then finding out he's actually pretty good at it.

That was a big knock on him coming out of Florida. Did anyone notice any missed blocking assignments from Rainey last night?

I think he's got a chance to be their 3rd down back this year, replacing Mewelde Moore. Todd Haley's new McCluster-like experiment, if you will. Maybe this one will work better.

Based on his combine #s, he has the speed and quicks for the job:

40 - 4.45

3-Cone - 6.50

20yd Shuttle - 3.93

60yd Shuttle - 11.06

He was the top performer at RB since 2006 in those last 3 events, according to the NFL combine site.

Tied for 2nd in 2012 behind Lamar Miller(4.40) with James + Hillman(4.45) in the 40.

How were his hands at Florida?

I don't see 10 touches/game by any means, but 5-7 is possible. PIT has said they want to run more screens / short passes to get the ball out of Ben's hands faster. He's certainly not fantasy relevant in smaller leagues, but he could provide a bit of a boon to Ben's stats (ie: the 57yd TD rec week 1 of the preseason). And if he wins the kick return job, he will certainly have value in return yardage leagues.

I think next week will tell the tale re: his PT. If Redman's back and he's still getting in there in the 1st quarter...

There may be a lot of mouths to feed; however, there are so many question marks surrounding many of those mouths. Rainey could get touches out of necessity.

As a Gator myself, I wonder how anyone gets any kind of excited about either Rainey or Demps. Those guys were great at putting up huge games against Kentucky and Western Carolina in college, but against real competition they went down as soon as someone sneezed on them. NFL competition is even better than that, and those guys don't stand a chance.

As a Gator fan, I'm actually glad they're gone as every time they got the ball against real competition was a waste of a play. I can't see either being anything other than a return man in the pros.

Who else was going to play RB last night? Of course he got a lot of opportunities with all the injuries at the position.

Yeah, he's like the only healthy RB on that roster. Redman and Mendy will be back in no time.

Let's REIN in our emotions here, folks.

As another Gator fan, I coudn't disagree with you more. You need to think about the Florida offense prior to Demps and Rainey breaking out; it was pretty poor. Demps and Rainey added so much explosion and play-making ability. Even the threat of them made defenses adjust. I think we'll miss them moving forward.Besides, they won't be running dive after dive in the NFL; they'll be used in space, as they should be. I don't know that they'll ever be fantasy relevant, but there is potential there.

To those saying its merely due to injury:

How does that explain Rainey playing with the 1's right off the bat in the first preseason game (prior to Redman's injury)?

Rainey will get some play this year. Probably not enough to be useful (ala McCluster), but he'll be on the field.

They were terrible. Big stats against bad teams. When they played the big boys, they stunk, aside from the occasional lucky play where they had a huge hole.

What time period are you talking about? Demps and Rainey were the top two backs from the minute Harvin turned pro. Under Meyer, they tried to make Rainey a multi-position threat, like Harvin, and it failed miserably. The last two years have been the worst two years of offense I've seen at Florida since the probation '80s.

They are 2nd and 6th in SEC career YPC, since 2000. During their last national championship run (08), look at the touches the 2 got prior to the Ole Miss loss, and the increase after the Ole Miss loss. The offense was bad because they didn't have playmakers in the WR corps, and because Tebow left behind massive shoes to fill. Sure, their offense was bad, but imagine it without Demps and Rainey. Gross.

They are 180 pounds. They were used as lead backs, getting dive plays again and again. Of course their production dropped against teams that could stop the run. It doesn't change the fact that they were BY FAR the best offensive players on the team, post-Tebow.

Chris Rainey - ONLY quality games against big opponests listed. 2008 Good Games: Florida State, South Carolina, LSU, Arkansas2009 Good Games: Tennesee, Florida State, South Carolina, Mississippi State2010 Good Games(only played in 8 games): Florida State, Penn State, Florida State2011 Good Games: South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, GeorgiaSeems like Rainey does fine against everyone but Alabama.
