Steelers punter Sepulveda out for season with knee injury

Steelers punter Daniel Sepulveda is out for the season with a torn ACL in his right knee.

Sepulveda, drafted out of Baylor in the fourth round last year, had a good rookie season with the Steelers and they were counting on him getting better this year.

He averaged 42.4 yards a punt last year, with 28 of his 68 punts landing inside the 20-yard line.

The Steelers traded draft picks in the fourth and sixth rounds to move higher in the fourth round in order to draft Sepulveda.

The Steelers do not have another true punter in camp. Julian Rauch, an undrafted rookie from Appalachian State, is on the roster. He is listed as a kicker but also can punt and was handling the punting chores at training camp this afternoon.

That guy's not really a punter though. He's a big, slow SS that happens to kick very well. I'm betting that he did it doing something other than kicking, unless someone roughed the kicker in camp... ?

Today, the Steelers claimed punter Paul Ernster off waivers from the Detroit Lions.

They knew he had knee problems before they drafted him and they still wasted two picks on him.

The 'Skins drafted a punter, and they'll either be cutting him or last year's punter Derrick Frost. Based upon how close they've said the competition is, and how they've also said that the real test will come in preseason games rather than practice, I'd expect one to be cut no earlier than after the last preseason game, however.

The one thing about Ernster is that he can also do kickoffs. In 2006 he had 19 touchbacks although he was with Denver at the time so perhaps the thin air had something to do with it.I remember him mishandling a punt last year against the Steelers in his one and only game with the Browns...
