STEELERS RB NAJEH DAVENPORT VS. BRONCOS DL ELVIS DUMERVIL: During the draft last April, Dumervil was one of those guys who confounds scouts, because he was a pass rushing defensive lineman who is 5-foot-11 and 250 pounds. A lot of teams passed on Dumervil until the Broncos used their second pick of the fourth round on him, and they have to be tickled with their decision. Because of his size limitations, Dumervil cannot be an every-down player, but he has been dynamite as a pass-rushing specialist. Through seven games, Dumervil has only seven tackles, but five of them are sacks. He is tied for ninth in the AFC. Dumervil will be on the field when the Steelers are in passing situations, and when that happens, Davenport is expected to be on the field as well, since Verron Haynes was placed on the injured reserve list. For the Steelers, the third-down back does more blocking than either running or receiving, and so Davenport will be in the mix when it comes to protecting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. In the games in which he has thrown multiple interceptions, Roethlisberger also has been under a lot of pressure. If the Steelers can protect him, he will have a chance to do what he did to the Broncos in January.
