Steelers question (1 Viewer)

Game Time

Footballguy
FWP owner, and I'm not complaining... Been real happy this year. Why though is he not a third down back? Just read the Squatter will take that role. He is a decent blocker, and has great hands and can make things happen in the open field. Sounds like a third down kind of player to me. Haynes NEVER stayed in to block, so it couldn't be that. Any Steelers homers with thoughts/ insight.....

I'm a FWP owner with Sunday Ticket and have seen alot of Steeler games this year. I was asking myself the same question earlier this year until I saw FWP get absolutely blown up trying to pass protect against the Jags. He whiffed on one that nearly got Big Ben killed. That's my guess as to why Haynes was in there for obvious passing situations.

The other issue is certainly durability concerns. Even with a different 3rd down back, FWP has averaged 23 touches per game. That's about 370 in a season. I'm not sure they'd want him to have any more than that.

Haynes is now IR'd, so the 3rd down *issue* might get interesting this week. Maybe Duce (if he's still there) or Davenpoop gets the work, but I'd bet FWP gets some.

From CBSsportsline:

The Steelers placed RB Verron Haynes (knee) and LB Arnold Harrison (knee) on Injured Reserve on Tuesday. To replace them on the roster, the team claimed LB Marquis Cooper off waivers from Minnesota and signed RB/FB John Kuhn from the practice squad.

I just watched the replay of the Oakland game. After the 2min warning, Steelers at the Oak 5 yd line. False start Davenpoop. Cowher pulls DP and puts in FWP for the 3rd down and used FWP for third's the rest of the way. Roethlisberger totally missed him on Pitt's 4th down play at the end!!! He was W I D E open.I speculate that FWP WILL be the 3rd down guy. DP will be used to spell FWP for carries between the 40's and maybe some short yardage.

DP is not a goal-line threat, IMO.

And, yes, I am a FWP owner :D :banned:

This comes today from the Post-Gazette:
Staley remains idle

Running back Duce Staley will be inactive for the game against the Broncos tomorrow, meaning running back/fullback John Kuhn will be the extra running back. That means Najeh Davenport will handle the third-down role vacated by Verron Haynes, who had a season-ending knee injury in Oakland.

"Part of football," Davenport said of his role. "Picking up the blitz, that's the most important thing."

Staley has been active for only one game this season -- the season opener against Miami -- and appeared only sparingly in the final minutes. Kuhn was signed earlier this week from the practice squad.
ETA - Just read this off the Steelers' website:
STEELERS RB NAJEH DAVENPORT VS. BRONCOS DL ELVIS DUMERVIL: During the draft last April, Dumervil was one of those guys who confounds scouts, because he was a pass rushing defensive lineman who is 5-foot-11 and 250 pounds. A lot of teams passed on Dumervil until the Broncos used their second pick of the fourth round on him, and they have to be tickled with their decision. Because of his size limitations, Dumervil cannot be an every-down player, but he has been dynamite as a pass-rushing specialist. Through seven games, Dumervil has only seven tackles, but five of them are sacks. He is tied for ninth in the AFC. Dumervil will be on the field when the Steelers are in passing situations, and when that happens, Davenport is expected to be on the field as well, since Verron Haynes was placed on the injured reserve list. For the Steelers, the third-down back does more blocking than either running or receiving, and so Davenport will be in the mix when it comes to protecting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. In the games in which he has thrown multiple interceptions, Roethlisberger also has been under a lot of pressure. If the Steelers can protect him, he will have a chance to do what he did to the Broncos in January.

Apparently the concern in Pitt is overusing Fast Willy. Even though his skillset seems to make him an idea 3rd down guy, they don't want him wearing down from touching the ball 30 times a game.

If he does get 3rd down work (which doesn't sound like their current plan) he would probably see less work elsewhere. He's too talented to dismiss that a particular game situation might dictate him being used every down, but owners hoping for him being an every down guy going forward are probably being overly optimistic.

It remains to be seen how the Steelers RB situation shakes out but I think you are right on the money with your speculation, especially this week.

I am surprised the Davenport is going to be the third down back. It seemed to me he was worse in pass protection hen Parker. I was watching for this in the Raiders game after Haynes went out. Parker caught a TD pass on a screen out of a shotgun set in the Oakland game. I was thinking he would get the nod as the 3rd down/shotgun back but i guest not warring him down is a bigger concern. I wouldn't be surprised if he got some time in at that position if they are down and need a play.

Can't wait to see it. Hope I'm right. I need him to have a great game with Westbrook on bye

FWP did a GREAT Westbrook impression!!! 14/70/1 and 7/67/1!!! Looks like DP got work in the 2min drill at the end of the first half. Also some midfield touches and the garbage time mop-up.Looks like FWP has the 3rd down job!!!
