Steve Smith (Carolina) going forward... (1 Viewer)

Panthers coach John Fox announced Wednesday that Jake Delhomme will remain the club's starting quarterback in Week 8.

It doesn't say much for the coaching staff's trust in Matt Moore or early-season acquisition A.J. Feeley. Still, expect the NFL's interceptions leader to be on a very short leash Sunday against Arizona. Delhomme is costing the 2-4 Panthers games while limiting his teammates' fantasy production.
Wow. ... and the pain of owning Smiff continues...
At least we know Delhomme will keep forcing the ball to him 10-12 times. Moore might try to spread the ball around like a real QB. Yuck.I have no issues with 6 for 99 and a shot at a TD.
A loooooong shot
I didn't see the game, but I read that Smith would have scored on the deep ball he caught if not for an "ankle tackle." It's a little sad, but it made me feel better.
True

John Fox said today that Jake was still the starter. Look for John Fox to take the San Fran coaching job next year.
Damn, i was hoping he was done after another abysmal performance. On a side note, they just had a little nfl films segment on Espn about Steve Smith. The guy is a beast and it is really a shame that Delhomme can't get him the ball.

SF is not looking for a coach. There are some other teams that might be though, try across the bay.

7 catches for 160 yards and 3 TDs in 2 games against Arizona last year.

I'm cautiously optimistic for Steve Smith's prospects this week.

Just read that Mushin is out, so Jake has no choice to lock onto Smith and ride or die with him. Lots of targets for Smith this week.I like the matchup for Smith this week, If Jake does not feed Smith a dose of targets this will not be pretty. Jake will most likely throw a couple of picks, but I also see a couple TD's to Smith

I'm becoming his battered girlfriend... every week he just abuses the Hell out of me by being in my lineup I swear I'm through with him and putting him on my bench. Then the next week he reminds me of all the good times we've had together and he manages to sweet talk his way back into my lineup.

A couple of tds? I am going to go out on a limb and say you have not watched the Panthers this year. The way Jake is throwing the ball and the way the Cards defense is playing now there is no way Smith sniffs a couple of tds.

He might have a good game, but Mushin being out has zero impact on anything.

Another tough choice for this week. Carolina's going to want to run, but does their D allow them to be able to? Yeah, he'll get targets, but just as much chance NO catches 'em as SS does.

Steve Smith is a borderline #3 at best right now. The glory days are long gone.

I wouldn't go that far yet. With the way the running game is going, D's must do all they can to slow it down and that should leave Smith with great opportunities. All Delhomme has to do is get him the ball. :excited:

With their tough playoff schedule against the run (NE, Minn, NYG), does anyone think this team will end up passing more than they need to? I just can't imagine Smith will keep getting the ball thrown his way 10ish times a game and do nothing.

Exactly. Da Guru's comment is about 3 weeks old. This is the best that Steve Smith's value has been since after the week 1 debacle. The running game is clicking and they are SHOCKING me by doing what I didn't think they could - turning into last year's Panthers. I don't like the schedule, but 1-2 more games and he will actually be useful in trades.

Smitty has feasted on the Saints over the course of his career. Improved defense or no, if Roddy White can terrorize their secondary, so can Smith. I expect his second TD of the year this weekend.

I hope you're right, but Roddy has a real quarterback.Sharper's probably got as good of a chance at housing one this week as Smith.

Smith being a borderline #3 has nothing to do with his talent.

Beyond the TD play, not sure I would characterize Roddy as terrorizing the Saints' DBs, as he only caught 3 other balls. Add the bolded above and not sure if this is the slam dunk you think it is.Guess it depends if you are a glass half empty or full kind of person

As a data point on trade value, I traded Smith for Witten today. (I lost Daniels for the season last week.)

I am starting Collie over Steve Smith as a point of reference on value...... not that you want to use my opinion as a point of reference :wall:

I think Sharper, Harper, and the Saints's defense are going to eat Delhomme alive on Sunday afternoon.

He has an undefeated record there, as a Saint and Panther. SSmith1 has always done great against the Saints too.

But it ends Sunday. Sacks and picks, sacks and picks.

"Terrorize"? No. He hit on one bomb, with a shove-off.Sharper, Harper, Greer and Porter are all candidates for 6.Delhomme's career began in the Dome, maybe it ends there too with a benching. (Kind of kidding, kinda not).

You folks are sticklers when it comes to your choice of adjectives. I guess 100+ and a TD (which could've, and should've, been 125+ and 2 TDs were it not for an uncharacteristic drop by Roddy) does not qualify as "terrorizing." I guess in a post 9/11 world, some words should simply be avoided in civilian use. How about "abused" or "smoked" or "made water on"?

Regardless, Smitty gets his second TD of the year this weekend.

I was at the game.Besides the bomb, 3 catches 40 yards, covered well almost every play. White was covered on the bomb, and while I've heard some people say that Greer may have bumped first, whatever, it was a desperate pass by a guy with a great arm while 14 down in the late 3rd quarter on 2nd and 20 and even so Greer was on the play, hardly beat.Ryan finished 19 for 42, with 1 TD - that one - with 3 INT's, 3 sacks (and maybe another one with a lost fumble overturned on review).Now I think Ryan (hate to say it) is a helluva quarterback.So, do you think Delhomme has the horses to match that?**********************5 TD, 13 INT's, 14 sacks, 3 games of 9 completions or less.WEEK OPP RESULT CMP ATT YDS CMP% LNG TD INT RAT ATT YDS AVG TD 1 PHI L 38-10 7 17 73 41.2 20 0 4 14.7 2 9 4.5 0 2 @ATL L 28-20 25 41 308 61.0 32 1 1 82.2 0 0 0.0 0 3 @DAL L 21-7 22 33 220 66.7 25 1 2 70.3 2 10 5.0 0 5 WAS W 20-17 16 25 181 64.0 22 1 1 82.3 3 7 2.3 0 6 @TB W 28-21 9 17 65 52.9 16 1 2 42.2 1 5 5.0 0 7 BUF L 20-9 27 44 325 61.4 52 0 3 55.6 0 0 0.0 0 8 @ARI W 34-21 7 14 90 50.0 50 1 0 94.3 1 7 7.0 0

I'm so on the fence about Smith I don't know what to do. I'd like to sell but if I do, I'll have to sell him and another player and not get fair value but his upside just seems so limited right now with Delhomme and that heavy run based offense.

Anyone have any news on SS this week? I know he had a "rib injury" during the game on Sunday. Any news Carolina homers?
(RotoWire) Smith (ribs) hasn't been listed on the Panthers' injury report on Monday or Tuesday.Analysis: It's possible that he'll end up being listed as probable after Wednesday's practice, but Smith's rib injury suffered on his second TD catch of Sunday's win over Atlanta appears to be a non-issue. Smith and the Panthers have a very favorable matchup on Thursday against a Dolphins secondary that ranks 27th in the NFL against the pass (239.4 YPG, 11 TD allowed).

So, in reading the game recap, SS caught all balls thrown his way. Did he play after he got hurt, but was not targeted and/or Jake couldn't get him the ball, or did he have the rest of the day off.

On the fence with him for this week, but, with the game being tomorrow, inquiring minds want to know...

The running game was working like a charm, so there wasn't much need to throw late in the game. Miami is better against the run than Atlanta and 27th (I think) against the pass. I'm starting Steve Smith.

Some more encouraging news....

Delhomme looked better this past week than in previous games this year. His passes seemed more accurate and he threw with confidence. Couple this with the return of Muhammad( a legit #2 receiver), I like Steve Smith going forward. He was a great player down the stretch last year. Borderline mvp of the second half. Hopefully some of that magic is reappears down the stretch

bump for today, as decisions need to be made

What is the advanced word on Gross's replacement at left tackle and its impact on the passing game? Jake likely doesn't need much to head back down the slope.

Any Panther homers to chime in, based on local reporting, etc...?

It was looking kind of bleak for him until the end of the Dolphin game. 15 points last week and 14 this week. All things considered I'll take it but I am pretty certain he will see my bench against the Jets secondary next week.

I traded bradshaw and burleson for him. I'm willing to gamble. 12 team league non ppr 2 wrs 2 rbs flex, i have enough rb depth (Williams, Jackson, Moreno, Cadillac, and D. Brown) and i have Colston and D Mason. I may have overpayed, but i don't care, he is a stud and we will see what happens.
Are you KIDDING ME?! I would trade Steve Smith for Burleson and Bradshaw in a heartbeat...
:moneybag: :moneybag:

Kind of sad to think about the game SS could have had with a real QB. The throw to his feet at the 4 could have been a TD...multiple over/under throws...a shame that this is a weekly gut check vs. a no brainer.

So true. And while Cutler is getting shafted around here like boarding students at my high school, imagine Smith having a QB like him being able to throw him the rock.

Agreed. It's totally not Steve's fault, but I just never feel comfortable putting him in my starting lineup anymore. Last night's game was another ulcer-inducing gimmick until that late TD. I've been attempting to deal him for a while. Hopefully, the last two weeks with 3 TDs makes some of the WR-poor teams in the league I own him rise to the bait. Even if he winds up being productive the rest of the way, I'm over having to rely on Delhomme getting him the ball.

Another point of trade reference:

In dynasty league, I traded Percy Harvin for Steve Smith and Darren Sproles (shoring up RBs for the playoff run)

I traded Steve Smith, Cincy D, and Portis for Ricky and Lynch on Tuesay night (before word broke out about Ronnie being placed on IR).You should be able to land a decent RB for Steve right now, expecially after his nice littlle TD run. Target an owner that wasn't able to watch the game last night (since it was only on NFL network). Sometimes people just look at the stat line on NFL.com and don't pay attention to how they players looked during the game. Delhomme couldn't lead a HS team to victory right now.

Well, I've started Smith for two straight weeks now and am GLAD that the Burleson owner wouldn't do this trade ;-)Sometimes you're smart. Sometimes you're just fortunate. I'm the latter in this case for sure...
