Strategy after drafting CJ or AP (1 Viewer)

Ok, so let's say you were fortunate enough to get one of the first two picks in your draft and you end up with CJ or AP (doesn't matter who for the sake of this discussion).

How do you fill your roster? Since you have one of the two best RBs, do you wait a bit longer for your RB2 then you would otherwise, and instead grab two WRs next? Would you even grab all 3 WRs before grabbing a RB2?

I'm interested to hear people's thoughts on this.

I drew #1 in a 10 team league. Very very competitive and $1000 entry. These guys know what they are doing. I generally never draft a QB before round 6-7 but this year I am think QB-WR at the 20-21 turn. Our league is a bit different in that we must start 3 RB's and 3 WR's. We have tried to even up the TE's and receivers by giving them 1 point per catch. RB's get nothing per catch. For the past few years it seems by the 40-41 turn that 7 QB's, 17 RB's and 15 WR's have been taken. With that in mind the RB's you would have available at 40-41 would probably be in the Addai, Best, Moreno area. Add them to CJ and your RB's look great. Good Luck

So you think it would be wise then at 20-21 grabbing the two best WRs available or a WR and a QB?

I'm going to have this decision coming up also. The thing is I like Charles a lot, if he is there on the way back I will go WR/Charles. If he is gone already then I will go WR WR or WR QB hopefully Romo.

I think Johnson and Charles if he plays up to all the potential could really dominate leagues.

I agree completely. Especially in a PPR, those two together could win a league on their own

Well I had the first pick in a 10 team ppr league and I went with 3 WR's after CJ. Here's my team;

CJ

CJ (Calvin)

GJennings

Ochocinco

JCharles

Cutler

Best

Nicks

Bradshaw

MRyan

Flacco

RBush

Big Ben

Eagles

Longwell

HMiller

MWilliams(TB)

Time for everyone in my league to Kiss Da Baby!

You drafted 4 QBs?

IMHO there is a lot of good late value this year at RB once the top 5-7 come off the board. I'd suggest looking at WR/WR/TE/QB (order depends on who's fallen). If you can get a guy like Romo/Brady and a great WR1 at the turn then it sets you up nicely for the rest of the draft. There are a handful of RBs that can be had in the 5-8th rounds who could provide very solid RB2 numbers when paired with CJ3.

 This is pretty much exactly my plan. I drew the #2 pick in a 14-team PPR and am planning on going ADP & most likely WR/QB at the turn. There's a lot of upside in 'later' RBs in my opinion, those along the lines of the rookie trio + guys like Joe Addai/Matt Forte, even Michael Bush.

I have #1 overall and am taking CJ. On the turn however, I find myself not loving the WRs still available to me at 24/25. The best is usually Colston and Boldin. Not 100% sold on either of them.

Only a ten teamer but not really competitive either Charles in 5th Best n 7th?

12 teamer I went CJ then Fitz, Jennings, P. Thomas, Crabtree, R. Bush, Celek, Donald Brown, Henne, Vikings D, jacoby Jones, j. Campbell, kicker

Ppr

I wanted to nab a top wr, and hate the qb bargain bin.

there were a couple good wr's left, but I ended up taking a rb and then schaub 'cuz there was a mini run on top qb's and I didn't want to get stuck with a mcnabb, or whoever, and I hate favre.

my wr corps sucks balls, but there probably ARE decent receivers you can get later.

honestly, I have a lot of knocks on the stud wr crop this year, so there are a limited # of guys I'd take early.

I drafted this team last night in a local $100 league and am pretty happy with it.

12 man redraft. 18 man roster

Start 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 non-QB flex, 1 K, and 1 D

6 points for all TDs and 1 point PPR plus standard performance scoring.

I drafted out of the 1 slot.

QB:

Romo (3.1) 6th QB taken

Kolb (10.12) 15th QB taken

RB:

C Johnson (1.1)

Best (5.1) 22nd RB taken

Bradshaw (7.1) 30th RB taken

Sproles (11.1) 42nd RB taken

Westbrook (14.12) 55th RB taken

WR:

R White (2.12) 7th WR taken

Owens (6.12) 27th WR taken

Knox (8.12) 37th WR taken

Royal (12.12) 51st WR taken

Yeah, We start 2 QB's. Cutler, Ryan, & Flacco off wk 8. Ben should be good to go by then. I can try to trade one of the 3.

12 team .5/1.0/1.5 PPR league from the #2 slot. Double Serpentine:

1.02 Peterson

2.11 Megatron

3.11 Gates

4.02 Rivers

I won't bore you with the rest but IMHO I got a top 5 at every position with those picks.

not to be a wiseass, but drafting anybody with the second pick should net you a top 5.drafting a te in the 3rd had better be a top 5.drafting a qb with the 38th pick usually gets you a pretty good shot at top 5.drafting a top 5 wr bottom 2nd could be considered a victory IF it happens --- I don't think calvin was top 25 in my league last year.

Just finished a 12 team serp draft and I was drafting in the 2nd spot. Its just a fun league at my work so there's about 5 serious players, 4 somewhat knowledgeable players and 3 complete rookies. 2 of the rookies let ESPN auto pick the whole thing for them so their teams aren't terrible. My draft results are...

1.02 ADP - RB - Minn

2.11 Ryan Grant - RB - GB

3.02 Roddy White - -WR - Atl

4.11 Chad Ochocinco - WR - Cin

5.02 Matt Forte - RB - Chi

6.11 Jahvid Best - RB - Det (not sure how he fell to me here)

7.02 Matt Ryan - QB - Atl

8.11 Zach Miller - TE - Oak

9.02 Hakeem Nicks - WR - NYG

10.11 Ahmad Bradshaw - RB - NYG

11.02 Malcolm Floyd - WR - SD

12.11 Montario Hardesty - RB - Clev (auto-pick here as I got distracted with my kids :banned: )

13.02 Chad Henne - QB - Mia

14.11 Redskins - DEF - Wash

15.02 Rian Lindelll - PK - Buf

16.11 Brandon Jackson - RB - GB

So you think it would be wise then at 20-21 grabbing the two best WRs available or a WR and a QB?YES

Just finished an FPC-scoring Draft Masters draft.

Had the 1.01

CJ

DeSean Jax

Aaron Rodgers

Spiller

Cooley

R. Bush

S. Moss

Gaffney

I'm happy.

I highlighted the critical information that you obviously missed.Calvin wasn't even top 20 last year in any leagues. But last year has nothing to do with this year.

The OP asked for strategy from the #1/2 slot. This was my plan pre-draft and it worked to perfection IMHO. If you don't like it GTFO, or post up your plan/results so I can reply with my "not to be a wiseass" post.

Not bad! Is that a 12-team league?I had #1 overall and decided against CJ/AP... and went with :cough: ahem, Rodgers,

It was my first year in this $100 10 team league and the scoring was very weird...

NON-PPR, start 1qb/2rb/3wr/1te/1k/1def

WR/RB get 1pt/10yds rec/rush and 6pts/td... 10pts bonus for 150yds rushing... 10pts bonus for 125yds receiving

QB get 1pt/25yds and 4pts/td... 10pts bonus for 300yds passing.

IMO, the bonus format is was got me to go QB.... and I think I wouldn't have gone wrong with either Manning/Brees/Rodgers, but went with Rodgers b/c I feel that Rodgers will still be playing through FF playoffs (whereas Manning or Brees might rest if they lock it up early).

So I ended up with

Rodgers (1) , Flacco (12)

Grant (4) , McCoy (6) , Best (7) , PThomas (10) , Spiller (13)

RMoss (2) , Calvin (3) , SMoss (8) , TO (9) , SSmith NYG (11)

Gates (5)

Akers (15)

TEN DEF (14)

We had our draft last weekend, and I liked what the guys at the front end did (excepting Mike wallace at 5.01). WR had been picked over pretty good (9 gone), but only 2 QBs off the board and Matthews still sitting there. Taking a QB early here really set a nice foundation, and there were plenty of upside picks remaining in the 4/5 turn.

1.01 C Johnson

2.12 D Jackson

3.01 T. Brady

4.12 C. Spiller

5.01 M. Wallace

1.02 A Peterson

2.11 A Rodgers

3.02 R Matthews

4.11 M Crabtree

5.02 D Bowe

1.03 MJD

2.10 G Jennings

3.03 T. Romo

4.10 A. Gates

5.03 J. Stewart
