I’m not sure what to say about Maisel. I love all the parts: Gilmore Girls is a top 10 all time for me, love Brosnahan, Shaloub and the period. It just doesn’t feel real the way Gilmore did. It feels artificial and forced. I want to like it, but I don’t. It feels like work.

Another similar show is Outlander. I love everything about it in the pitch but it just doesn’t click for me.  Wish it did.
I get what you're saying and I agree. Couldn't put my finger on it but yeah, it's a bit too choreographed, like a stage play. Very precise delivery on everything. At least it seems like that to me. Unlike Mad Men that had a real natural feel to it.
I might like it more than Nick, but I'm not all in on it- even though I've watched both seasons.

and yeah- I think you're on to something about the writing/delivery- doesn't feel authentic, even if a lot of it works. tbh, I really didn't like gilmore girls for that exact reason- the back and forth speedy banter where it felt like it was just one person saying the same kind of stuff over and over again (from different mouths).

what else I don't like is that I don't find maisel's character to be that funny- and so much of it is seeing her stand-up and feeling like... guh- mostly just annoying. I find her agent, otoh, to be hilarious. and shaloub kills.

made a career of doing it. he was the most memorable part of "Wings" back in the day.

I like the show, but as far as I’m concerned it’s a little *too* much like Gilmore Girls in that at times some (many?) of the main characters come off as unlikeable, which can make for a tough watch for stretches.

Mrs. Maisel is very good - not quite great. Like Floppo, it feels like sometimes the laughter/response to the stand up routines is forced and the material isn't that funny. It's not painfully bad though. I wonder who they bring in to write the comedy material.

Shalhoub is great, as is Alex Bornstein, and I think Marian Hinkle is great as well (but doesn't seem to get as much publicity) - often times she seems the most "real" character on the show.

I'm constantly shocked at how "Jewish" the show is, I often wonder if people not of the tribe get a lot of the references.

based on recommendations from this thread I'm going to give Travelers a shot this week.

The Marvelous Ms. Maisel is cleaning up at the awards shows...but not sure if it's my bag...any strong opinions on this?
Meh.  Too much fast talking

How about a fair to middling?

Mrs Maisel is worth the watch if the first two eps aren't annoying for you.
That’s as far as I got, Wife watched the rest without me

I picked up on this as well

I recently read a post where someone said something to the effect of, men are all babies when they are sick.

Is this really an issue that people can't speak like this?
Would you say "men aren't funny"? Or "people aren't funny"? No, because that's ridiculous.

Sad to watch people lose their minds over having a light shone on their biases.

Ted Bundy doc was compelling.  Insane how he escaped a second time.

Was amazing how Bundy charmed the judge.  Looking at the judge I would never have believed it.

Seattle police force came off pathetic too.  No one gave a ####.

Yeah, I dont get the criticism.  I dont agree with it and feel bad for him feeling that way, since i find a lot of women to be hilarious, but dont see what's wrong with not being able to do so.

Not sure I get the point. Who is losing their mind?

i was just asking a question. I never stated any bias. I didn't think much of either comment but asked why it is a problem to the degree the owner would make a point of calling it out.

Agreed. Now who is this Ted Bundy you guys are talking about?
Apparently some hot guy.

Netflix US @netflix

I've seen a lot of talk about Ted Bundy’s alleged hotness and would like to gently remind everyone that there are literally THOUSANDS of hot men on the service — almost all of whom are not convicted serial murderers

I had only heard of Bundy and was generally aware of his serial killer status along with the good looks description.

I didn’t think the tapes themselves were that interesting because quite frankly, he was an uninteresting man with not a lot to say.  But getting the details of the story along with his escapes and how it seemed the country reacted to him once he became a ‘sensation’ was compelling.

lol wtf

America to Me.

it's on Amazon- the guy who did Hoop Dreams made a doc series about Oak Park HS (chicago suburb?), specifically dealing with race (I think it was made 2015, around the time of the black lives matter beginning). watched the 1st ep and part of the second- very compelling stuff. follows a handful of kids through the year (all black or bi-racial) through their classes and lives, again, with an eye towards how race affects what's happening in their educations. students are very aware they are being filmed- as are the kids around them (one kid asks others if they want his autograph because he's being featured in the doc)... so it remains to be see how "real" this can get. but after hoop dreams, I trust the director to get things as close to right as possible, even if the immersion into his subjects' lives is only a year this time.

anybody else seen this? I'm 100% on board so far.

Oof, my bad, I just read Irisheyes post and thought he was talking about women comics in general.  Reading the original post I think the dude is just trying to be funny.   Sorry I misunderstood the post
No, he's pretty much just a bigot.

Nice! I will check this out.  Have loved all of James' docs I've seen so far.

Bundy's story and measure of celebrity are very much a product of his time. There were awful serial killers before him but he broke through in a time that a maturing pop culture drove the culture.

curious what you liked about it?

ftr, I didn't. found it aimless and uninteresting... and I like apocalyptic stuff typically. but am open to a new perspective...
liked both the man and the woman's acting.  thought they had good chemistry.  i like short movies, and the background concept of leaving for a colony around IO was cool.  Not great, just good.  6.5/10.

That’s what I found interesting...was the reaction to him.  Not the man himself.

thanks. fair enough- yeah, they were both decent. and I liked the concept a lot too. just felt like nothing happened, and not enough sciencey stuff to keep me interested, however short.

Where is where is my BSG, 100 replacement?  Need a smart sci-fi show on amazon or Netflix. Recommendations... go!
The Magicians.  I don’t know if that qualifies as sci-fi and I’m about to give it a completely contradictory review:  I can’t stand this show, but I freaking enjoy it; which is pretty similar to my opinion of The 100.  It is dumb almost all the time, but almost always entertaining despite that.

Love the rec but please don't call the 100 dumb.  Brilliant TV.  Call it that.

the 100 and the magicians go pretty well together. I did a deep dive on the magicians the first couple seasons but completely forgot about it since- but I think it'll work for you. one of the guys at Taconic was/is dating one of the leads here..

It got a lot of hate in here but in that category I actually liked Altered Carbon on Netflix.

Second the recommendations of The Magicians. It could be better and I wish we had more TV like it, but it's entertaining. Not as good as The 100 can be imo.

Really wish we had more stuff like BSG and The 100.

Oh and Travelers is good. More Fringe than BSG but still good. In that category Continuum is okay.

I watched Travelers and Altered Carbon.  Both are various levels of mess (Time travel/infinite life related) but I enjoyed them enough for different reasons. Continuum is new to me, so will check out.

So he can't say women stand up comics aren't funny??  Is it the same standard saying the same about Male comics.
He shouldn't say it because it's not true.

I am serious when I say Mrs. Dogg is one of the single funniest people on the planet.

Certainly, there are exponentially more famous male comics than female. But there's a lot more involved with this than trying to decide which gender is funnier. Women have been subjugated for centuries, they've been excluded from high power positions, and they've been told to shut up and cook dinner. This is not a great way to incubate the female comedy market. I can rattle off a bunch of very funny female comedians, and as the decades progress further and further from a misogynist culture, we'll see the amount of great female comedians continue to rise.

If you listen to enough comedy podcasts, and I listen to far too many, you will definitely lose your mind laughing at some of these female comedians.
