Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (12 Viewers)

American Horror Story - I like it. Very original in how they recycle the cast between seasons but each season is a self contained story arc. I really liked season, the completely got me and my GF with the twist towards the end, even if I did think the abilities of the ghosts were highly inconsistent (pretty much they could or couldn't do anything depending on what the plot required).

Season 2 is definitely more graphic, kind of gratuitous actually, but it is still well done. The pervasive feeling of despair, that there will be no happy ending (even if there might be) is very hypnotic, like you can't turn away. I imagine The Walking Dead uses the same formula (only watched season 1 of that one so far).

Also Jessica Lange is really allowed to test her range and she consistently delivers.

It's one freaking dollar. People are seriously peeved about this?

Oh no, my TV now costs an extra $12 a year. It's a pittance compared to what cable companies do with their rates.
I don't like to pay more for anything... not sure about you. At least as a current subscriber, I get two years before it increases.
So you absolutely despise the cable companies then?

lol @ despise. I don't despise Netflix for doing this either. Just would prefer not to pay more.

FWIW... My cable bills have gone down the past few years as I finagle bundles/plans... but that's beside the point.

Throwback to and old one here...tried finding it again, but it was gone. It's on Youtube though. Here's a taste of Butch Vig breaking down "Something in the Way":

Watched Odd Thomas this afternoon.

Liked this movie a lot. Kind of paranormal, crime fighter move. Major bonus--Addison TImlin is in this movie. I have never seen her before, but WOW, she is hot. No nudity in this movie but Californication series features her in an episode.
Agreed and majorly agree.

"Terms And Conditions May Apply", a documentary showing how our personal data is collected and used. NSA, Google, Facebook... I'm strongly recommending my teenage kids watch it.

Frozen ground, with nic cAge and cusak, good solid cast, based on the Hanson Alaskan serial killer..

Thought it was very good

Hit & Run.

Very very funny in parts; mostly Tom Arnold's driving/shooting scenes which were laugh out loud hilarious.

But a lot of the dialogue seemed unnatural, like it was trying to be Pulp Fiction, but the conversations didn't flow well.

Decided to watch Olympus has Fallen and White House Down back-to-back marathon over the weekend. I liked the ones with the Koreans better than the Jamie Foxx version.

Amazon Prime - May 21

All seasons of:

"The Sopranos"

"The Wire"

"Deadwood"

"Rome"

"Six Feet Under"

"Eastbound & Down"

"Enlightened"

"Flight of the Conchords"

Some seasons of:

"Boardwalk Empire"

"Treme"

"True Blood"

Pretty sweet, another reason to go to Prime ...I still haven't made the commitment.
wow that's surprising. wonder what that means for hbo go's future.
Probably not much of an effect. It's older shows and it's getting revenue from the people that aren't going to buy HBO anyway. Sampling the older shows might even get some of them to subscribe to see what GoT and True Detective are all about.

I imagine this revenue is just nice to help balance out (I assume) sharply declining DVD sales.

Can't remember if I posted this, but I thought "Drinking Buddies" was pretty good for a Sunday afternoon, nothing better to do viewing.

i love that Prime has added all of this. they have really broadened their offerings and cleaned up the UI on it with my Roku. i'm giving Netflix a few months to show me more before deciding if i want to bail.

Surprisingly good flick.

Odd Thomas and GI Joe Retribution were also a good movies.

There Will be Blood was mediocre at best.

Usual Suspects - I've only seen it a million times but worth another viewing before the 1st.
It loses a lot after the reveal. Ive seen it 3 times and probably wont ever watch again. Theres no intrigue anymore. Great performance but just nothing new to gain from it and its not a guilty pleasure shut off my brain movie like Point Break.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies, so I can't be objective here. I will never tire of watching Usual Suspects.

The big reveal at the end is pretty awesome the first time you see it. But even if that surprise inevitably wears off, here you have one of the very few perfect movies. Every scene is interesting, and every single performance including the bit parts is outstanding.

Yep. Pretty much a perfect movie, even with a lesser Baldwin playing a major role.

Maybe its because I watched it years later, but to me its very slow at times. I like nuance and subtlety but it took me three viewings to get all that was going on and once I did I was a left with a "oh thats it" feeling. Probably just had too much hype for me going in as opposed to those who didnt know what to expect. Im ok with watching it if nothing else is on but not in my top 10.

Love this show and you just reminded me I need to fire up season 3. Jessica Lange was fantastic in season 1 & 2, as was Evan Peters, Vera Farmiga's little sis in season 1, and others.

While I somewhat agree with you on the reveal and that its not as good as the first time, its a too well done movie to say I wont ever watch it again. I could watch Spacey and Benicio for days, and this is up at the top of the list for them. The rest of the performances are solid as well.

I caught this on Saturday for the first time in about 8 years. Even when I know what to watch for, I still feel like I missed a bunch of things.

Did Verbal kill Keaton and Arturo Marquez? Or was it Kobayashi? :bag:

Apologies if this was already posted, but it's a nice guide to what's available:

The 101 Best Movies Streaming on Netflix 2014
Cool list, thanks.

I have never been able to sit down and watch Raging Bull. Just haven't had any interest. Maybe I'll do it soon.

Also, I have tried to sit down and watch Donnie Darko, but have never made it past 15 to 20 minutes. I guess I have to gut that one out too.
If you're going to watch DD, you've got to put on your Teen Angst hat.

And read through Roberta Sparrow's The Philosophy Of Time Travel. It kind of spoils the movie unless you're going to watch it more than once. But it sounds like for you once will be enough.

Bull is hard to watch, especially the first time. DeNiro's character is wholly unlikable. But I sort of learned to pity Lamotta with subsequent viewings.

Darko is weird, but totally worth seeing.
