I basically liked season 1 of White Lotus. It wasn't the type of show I would typically watch (dramedy) and the social commentary was way too didactic, but there was just enough suspense and dark comedy to keep my attention through six episodes. Totally okay change-of-pace.

Watched the first two episodes of season 2 last night and now I'm not sure that I'll bother to stick with it.
Nice word choice!

the social commentary was way too didactic
But that was kind of the point as it applied within the family dynamic. That’s how young people think now and it was balanced out by the parents (mostly the mom).
I didn't mean just the teenage girls -- I get that that was part of the way their characters were written, and that's fine. What I was getting at was the class distinction between the guests and the resort workers. The idea of doing a show that explores how wealthy neurotic-types see themselves when they're on vacation vs. how they're perceived by the resort staff is a really good one. Parasite did a great job with this general idea IMO. I just thought White Lotus was too on-the-nose here.

For example, I forget exactly when this happened, but there was a scene where the girls and their parents were on the boat after the native guy had been caught breaking into their room. The "guest" girl who set this whole disastrous thing up was looking all forlornly into the distance, and the camera actually cut to a shot of the wake of the boat, as if to say "Look at the damage that these people are leaving in their wake!!!1!" Which again is a great idea for a show, but the messaging was a bit much.

Just my two cents. It was a perfectly fine show that just could have been tightened up a bit IMO.

I finished the first 4 episodes of The Peripheral. It's ok so far but I'm not loving it. The poor acting is holding it back, imo. Plus, there haven't been a lot of WTF moments yet. I'll stick with it though.
I like the show a lot because it does a great job world building and they have some fascinating sci fi concepts. The acting (and fighting in particular) is lackluster though.

Happy to see Dead To Me is back on with season 3. I’ll finish that this weekend.

White Lotus on HBO (season two) started slow but is now getting much better. Episode 4 was last weekend.

Just finished The Patient. Thought it was good. No real action but kept me interested the whole time.
It was slow at times but I enjoyed it as well. I appreciate the ending they gave us. It wasn’t your usual, cookie cutter ending.

Any word if they will do another season?

Just binged all 3 seasons in the past week. Was interested in Applegate due to her health status. Really enjoyed it more than I anticipated. Found it funny while treating characters with dignity on some serious themes.

I love The Peripheral so far. Great world building, character development, and sci fi.

I started watching Inside Man on Netflix having no idea what it was about but like Sherlpck and the actors. I had to shut it off half way through the first episode. Talk about one dumb decision after another. I can't watch a show with such stupid characters.

I'm two episodes in. Nice blend of Matrix-y type themes and good action. I am still kinda confused at some things but hope they'll just tie up loose ends as it progresses. Will watch two more tomorrow.
Peripheral is pretty good but I'm 4 in and have decided I have to watch the first episode again. Some things aren't adding up.
Loving it so far. Just started this week and got through episode 4. I think I am following everything fine.

I think that might be my problem with it so far. The reason why there hasn't been many WTF moments. I want to not be able to follow it so easily. Everything so far has been understandable and pretty easy to follow along with. Not much "mind bending" going on. I've yet to even consider looking for a recap.

Agreed the action is simple. My problem when I posted this is the motivations of the non US characters. I'm still not sure I understand why they are doing any of this. But I've enjoyed the season. I'm in for more.

Episode 5 is a humdinger.
Did you mean Episode 6 because I just watched the 5th last night and outside of a couple of shootouts, nothing much really happened. At least not much to move the story forward. It was kind of a filler episode.
I'm out I think. Maybe ill come back to it if people are blown away by a second season.

Watched A Christmas Story Christmas last night on HBO Max and it was a perfect follow up to A Christmas Story. If you like the original you should like this. We signed up for HBO Max just for this. It is 1.99 a month right now with ads, but the movie was ad free.

1899 is no Dark. Not yet anyway. It's secrets are held too close to the vest in service of setting up S2.

Still, it IS interesting and has a cool look. It's worth watching.
I am through episode 6 I think and getting frustrated that there is still no explanation at all for the craziness.

Like most shows of the type (Lost, Dark, & the like) you don't get everything you want from Season 1.

Without spoiling things - you get almost 100% of "Where" and "When", 33% of "Who and What" and about 0% of "Why".

Among the Living - Vudu (free). British zombie movie! Very slow paced, but fast zombies. I had to turn on subtitles for the accents given how short the sentences/exclamations were. The story here was understated - the lakeshore scene right by the end would be overacted into Bolivian in most movies… but the audience gets it. The final scene shows the character knows too.

All zombie movies are bleak, but there’s something neat in this one about how much the brother is eating that so the two kids can mostly be just kids. It’s destroying him, but he knows it’s worth it.

Worth watching.

No I meant the 5th. The action was enough to keep me interested. I need the future stuff to get clearer to return for season 2 but I’ve mostly liked it.

Funny

I find the action to be the worst part of the show

I’m the other way on this. I liked the first season enough to watch this one. Two episodes in and will keep going. Like the vibe, music, and the slow pace of the show. Character build up is good so far.

Also makes me want to take a trip to Sicily.

Barbarian pretty solid horror movie
Barbarian was awful. Some interesting setup at the start but once you saw the “monster”, it was all downhill. Beyond idiotic characters and to be honest, super powers just made it so bad. The arm? WTF? The mismanagement of the gun was laughable.

Can’t believe it was 92% at Rotten Tomatoes. The 71% audience score was way closer to reality. I can see the critics liking it more for the film industry/me too part, but I wouldn’t recommend it at all. The good build up was just thrown in the garbage by the ending.

One thing I will add is that I had heard it was good, so it might not be that bad if you aren’t expecting a good movie. Unfortunately, I was expecting a good movie and it wasn’t.

Really enjoying Shantaram thus far on Apple+ if anybody is looking for a show.

We're going to give White Lotus 2 a shot after Shantaram, the first one was really good IMHO.

Tried Peripheral and wasn't feeling it after a few episodes but might give it another try once I run out of stuff to watch.

I am enjoying Shantaram too. Though I think it could be a little shorter. There is some dragging in the middle. Its 12 total episodes apparently. I reckon 10 would've been fine.

Watched Confess, Fletch a few times. I read a review that said if you watched the Chevy Chase version of Fletch, the first viewing of the reboot won't go well. That was very true for me, as Jon Hamm's take on Fletch is so dramatically different. The 2022 movie is said to be much truer to the version throughout the 11-book series.

In the early films, Chevy Chase played the role pretty campy and was the main comic element. In the latest film, Hamm is more of a dry character, and the other characters are all quirky and provide the comic relief.

I liked it more with each viewing (ie, the more removed I got from thinking of Chevy in the title role). There are some funny lines, but since they are delivered so mater-of-factly, they are hard to pick up on.

I don't think it's as good as its Rotten Tomatoes score (86% critics / 75% audience), nor do I think it should score higher than the original Fletch movie (77% critics / 81% audience). But I do think it is better than some of the feedback in here. I'd give it a 2.5/4.0 score.

Not sure how you can find fault with an action scene where a guy gets stabbed 40 times and keeps on swinging.

Someone hasn't watched all of True Blood.
Anyone who stuck with the show for those last few seasons couldn’t have expected anything better.
Wife and I just finished season 3 and the plot is already disastering. But an explanation of True Blood is in order.

True Blood was obviously written by someone who regularly writes wholesome movies for Hallmark. There's the know-it-all mystery-solving female star who's quick to condemn others, the best friend who's a social misfit, the brother who's a total dumbass but nice guy.

The changes to the usual Hallmark plot and setting are: it's in a poor part of the Deep South, there are vampires, then.. there's vampire blood which is easily available that has the effect of Cocaine/LSD/steroids, then.. there are werewolves, then.. there are shapeshifters, then... there are maenads (I swear someone looked up "mythical creatures with great power" and wrote the whole plot), then... the vampires have a political power structure and battles, then... there are witches, then... there are fairies, then... I don't know, thats where we are at the end of season 3. Oh, and lots of characters get nekkid lots of times which is nice.

The dialogue is wondrously bad.
** werewolves attack virginal-looking main character **
** vampire tries to save her life **
Southern Gentleman Vampire: "Drink my blood, it will save you."
** she drinks blood **
** she miraculously recovers**
Virginal-looking main character: "Why didn't you save me sooner, you undead SOB?"
Southern Gentleman Vampire: "Because I love you."
Virginal-looking main character: "Take me home, and don't enter my house again"

I'm going to stick around for as much of seasons 4-7 as my wife wants to watch because she loves vampires and we both enjoy making fun of bad TV. And True Blood is bad TV.

It gets pretty terrible. Do a shot every time someone does the vampire teeth out “Snikt!” and then hiss at each other

It does have a good intro song and some good boobs at least
The teeth sound is hilarious. "Snikt!", and then they fly around like giant horseflies on meth trying to kill each other.

Just finished (the awful) Season 5 which consisted mostly of vampire politics instead of the usual town residents falling victim to unbelievable powers. And I'm still convinced the dialogue and plot were written by the Hallmark channel.

Pepsi Where's My Jet (Netflix)

Cool series, but another in a long line that they gave four episodes to a story that could have easily been told in one or two at the most.
Way too much screen time to Avenatti. What a tool.
Todd Hoffman was a cool dude. Seemed like a guy that would be fun to run with.
Interesting that the case became a highlight in law school case studies.
Arrogant Pepsi execs sound like a real prize to work for.

I liked the show and even though it could have been cut down, I was cool with how long it took. Agree with everything else you wrote.
I remember the commercial and I think the case was brought up here a long time ago but I never really followed it. Interesting story. The Philippines story was crazy too.

Watching "Pepsi Where's My Jet" I was pretty conflicted. I kept hoping the kid would win, while simultaneously hating the guy because he and people like him are pretty much the reason we have so many disclaimers in advertising.

It was worth a watch. I agree with the points posted already.

I enjoyed the documentary. Pained me to no end that he didn't take the million and thought he actually thought Pepsi had a jet they would give him. But, cool story and a rarity where the fine print (e.g. that you could buy additional points) arguably worked in favor of the little guy instead of the corporation so it was fun to see the corporation squirm a bit.

Agree with everything stated here. Should have been a 100 minute documentary. Also, can confirm it's a case taught in law school (it really is an interesting case in the area of contract law where most fact patterns are super boring and technical).

Loved Todd Hoffman as well.
