Summer Stock Up/Down--Let's make a list-homers check in (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
Preseason doesn't mean anything.  Preseason means everything.  Some summer hyped guys turn out to be bums, some summer hype is a sign that a guy is legit.

Starting with OTA's, and continuing through training camp and preseason games, who has seen their stock skyrocket?  I'm not talking about Zeke Elliott (his stock couldn't skyrocket), I'm talking about Tajae Sharpe.  Also, who is getting slammed, and watching their stock fall??  Figure this will be good to look at after the season.

Please suggest any names I have missed.  IDP names welcome.

STOCK UP

QB

Dak Prescott--Any list like this needs to start with this first ballot August Hall of Famer.  Looked amazing in games, writers are fighting over adjectives to use in their puff pieces. Just nin time for this thread, here's a story comparing him to Tom Brady, for Pete's sake.

Paxton Lynch--Some might not agree with him being here, but he has had consistently good reports, and looked decent in games.  Does not look like the three year project draftniks predicted.

Robert Griffin III--Took the #1 job, and has looked capable in preseason.

RB

Derrick Henry--Looks really good.  Like Lynch, not a pre-draft favorite of many, has been running through cornerbacks like The Hulk through soldiers.

Spencer Ware--Interesting story here, as his hype is not necessarily what he has done this summer, but is a combo of Charles' slow-ish recovery, the discovery that Ware was good last year, and a single blurb from a KC writer.

Christine Michael--You cannot write the story of the Shark Pool without writing about CM. Stories that he has his head screwed on right, looked good in preseason.

Jeremey Hill--Has looked good in preseason, and I feel like he has seen a quiet increase in his stock this summer.

Terrance West--Looks good in games, his competition is old, injured, and limited athletically (Forsett/Dixon/Allen).

WR

Tajae Sharpe--Considered a decent receiver who needed to gain weight on draft day, he made DGB an afterthought in August, and is clearly the Titans #1 WR. Amazing.

Michael Thomas--Eye-catching plays in preseason games, andhype from pretty much day 1 in New Orleans.  Sharpe and Thomas are the poster boys for summer stock UP.

Kenny Stills--Pushed DeVante Parker to the 3rd WR spot, with an assist from Parker's hamstrings.  #2 target on an offense without a ton of options?

Marvin Jones--Few thought the Lions got a bargain with the Jones contract, but Jones has looked good in DET, and the promise of up tempo offense has people thinking he's a bargain where he's going.

Will Fuller--Linked up for some deep balls in August, people that were running him down on draft day now discussing his being a steal, not mentioning any prominent FBG podcasters by name.

Sterling Shepherd--Seems like the goods, had a good summer.  Good situation, could get a lot of targets.

Dante Moncrief--Chatter all summer that he would become Luck's Mr. Reliable. Should lead team in targets.  Colts painful running game only more good news.

TE

Zach Ertz--No young WR has wowed anyone at camp, chatter that Ertz will be a target monster.

Vance McDonald--Torrey Smith is Torrey Smith, and with the injuries of Smelter, Eric Rogers, and Bruce Ellington, McDonald looks like this year's Delanie Walker.

Coby Fleener--Signed with TE Dream World New Orleans. Brees said in June Fleener was 'always open'.

STOCK DOWN

QB

Jared Goff--He was the NFL-ready one of the three 1st rounders, and has looked like the 5th best rookie QB at best this summer.  Inactive on game day to start the season.

Carson Palmer--This isn't a major drop, but Carson has not looked good in games for a while now.

Tony Romo--Yeah.

RB

DeMarco Murray--Simply a byproduct of Henry's summer. Has looked fine himself.

Kenneth Dixon--Pre-draft darling, who is part of a crowded backfield, and in injured, raisng questions about his durability going back to college.

Jamaal Charles--Aging, another ACL injury, slower to return to game speed than people hoped, unstoppable force of Ware hype.

Jay Ajayi--Not breathtaking in preseason, team signs fan favorite Arian Foster. FF owners begin sniffing around Damien Williams.

Matt Jones--Is anyone a fan of this guy at this point?

Thomas Rawls--Injury concern and the rise of Christine 'Upside' Michael.

WR

Dorial Green-Beckham--Passed by a 5th round UMASS wideout who didn't even break a sweat doing it, then traded for a ham sandwich to a team starting a rookie who had 36 preseason snaps.

DeVante Parker--Word that he couldn't beat out Kenny Stlls this summer, then reports that he wasn't eating breakfast, needs to stretch more, has questionable toughness.  Other than that, great summer for this bum on my dynasty team.

Tyler Lockett--Offseason excitement around Lockett has cooled a bit, as fears that an increase in targets might not be forthcoming.

Kevin White--Love to see a graph of his stock.  Spring hype so over the top the writers should be embarrassed has given way to subdued optimisim, then worry.  Reading his Rotoworld blurbs is hilarious, as they lower his expectation with each new one. Waaaay too early to call, but he had a bad first summer.

Laquon Treadwell--Has done as close to nothing as is possible for a 1st round WR to do.

Leonte Carroo--Had some draft chatter. Reports that he's not ready for the NFL game. Done little in camp.

TE

Ladarius Green--Free agent hype has been trumped by confusing injury situation.

Austin Sefarian-Jenkins--Former college phernom who has maturity questions, cannot beat out a guy you've never heard of.

Coby Fleener--Only guy to make both lists. OTA hype has given way to talk of 'adjustment period'.  Overall, he has probably ended up in same stock spot he was in when he signed with Saints.

Who am I missing?  Will add IDP players to OP as well.

Nice list and nice analysis.   Well done.   The only one that I'm having a hard time being in full agreement with is T Lockett.  I feel like his stock went up really high in a very quick fashion--and has then come down from that super "high point".   I'm not sure if I'd qualify that as "stock down"--he's just not as "high" as he once was.

I get you.

I would say that his stock went up in early offseason, even going back to late last season, and since July we have  seen it go down, a bit.  And the thesis of the thread is to keep track of all the up/down since the draft.  That's really the starting point for me.  Any I would say his stock has gone down since the draft. Not a massive amount, and it's probably just a correction as you said, but that's still stock down.  I think you are right, people were TOO excited about him, and that's worth mentioning by his name.  Frankly, this is exactly what I want, a reason for the hype, and the ability in a few months to examine what went wrong or right, and how much to pay attention to summer stock trends.

Moncrief should be added to stock up.  He was going in the 8th round or later at the start of summer mocks I did, now he's in the 4th-5th.

Patriot players:

*Brady still looks like he is 28 and has a ton of weapons...he will light it up starting week five...Jimmy G was average this preseason...not sure what to make of him but ultimately I think it will come down to O line protection...if he gets it he will be fine...if not it could get a little ugly...really like what I saw of Brisset...I think he could end up being the QB after Brady but he has almost no value right now because Brady is not close to being done...

*Blount is Blount...I think Gaffney's early TD run lit a little fire under him but he will be what he is...roll the dice on what week he is fantasy relevant...Bolden looks like an afterthought right now...DJ Foster looked very good and is a guy to keep an eye on...he looked like Dion Lewis in the games he played...White is nothing special but will have a role early...if Foster is legit White's value will be shot...if Foster is not legit White will have solid PPR numbers until Lewis gets back...I think Foster is worth a final roster spot for at least a week or two...

*If Edelman is healthy he will be a PPR monster...the question is can he stay on the field...I don't see much value in Amendola...he's much better as a real football player than a fantasy player...Hogan is intriguing and has a chance to do what LaFell did two years ago...the x-factor is Mitchell looks real good as well so that could hurt both of them...you can almost tell immediately whether a Patriot WR (rookie or veteran) will succeed or fail in their system and both of them seem to "get it"...if you don't think Edelman will stay on the field bump both up some...especially Hogan...

*Gronk is a stud...Bennett is a little concerning...he's looked pretty average but he is an odd dude and I have not heard any BB rumblings about him...yet...I would not be in a rush to add him...in deep dynasty leagues AJ Derby is a name to follow...it was only preseason but the kid looked like a seasoned pro...great hands and seems to have a knack for getting open...lot of mouths to feed here but with Gronk's injury history and Bennett being a little bit of a wildcard he is someone who can become fantasy relevant at some point this season...

Overall I would put them at:

Up...Foster/Derby/Hogan/Mitchell/Brisset/White

Same...Gronk/Edelman/Blount/Brady

Down...Lewis/Bolden/Bennett/Jimmy G/Amendola

Great list and writeup. Really will be interested to see how foolish we're all going to look in January.

A couple of additional nominations:

UP: Virgil Green - Undrafted and practically unnoticed in spring, has caught everything thrown his way in TC and preseason, and goes into the season with an untested 2nd-year QB who should give him plenty of looks.

DOWN: Rueben Randle - Put up 800 yards receiving just last year, yet couldn't even make the final 53 on a team with a bottom-5 NFL WR corps. Seems to have a severe case of DGAF both on-field and off. A mid-round springtime selection who, incredibly, may have caught his last NFL pass.

DOWN: Nelson Agholor - Underwhelming OTAs, underwhelming TC, couldn't hold on to a pass in preseason if you ran out there and placed it in his hands. Likely passed on the depth chart by a guy acquired for the aforementioned ham sandwich two weeks ago.

How this guy is still a "starter" is beyond me... he looks absolutely lost out there, as in it looks like sometimes he doesn't know that he's supposed to run AWAY from people on the other team.

i'm a little reluctant to downgrade rookie WRs and QBs. arguably they have the hardest adjustment to the NFL. i'm not at all surprised when they don't wrest the starting job or vault to relevance.

Nice post. I would put DGB more on the UP side of the coin. He is on a team that wants him, has shown playmaking ability this preseason with that new team, and has very little competition.

I'm not arguing for the stock value one way or another.  I'm collecting a list of the narratives.  In other words, what's the consensus?  I think that has value long term. I have no idea if Tajae Sharpe can play or not, but the perception of his value has skyrocketed, that is not in question.

At the end of last season, and even after the draft, DGB was seen as a potential WR1 for a team with an up and coming QB.

His stock is not only definitely down since the offseason began, it might have the biggest drop.  Getting traded to a team with crappy WRs is better I guess, but his stock is waaaay down.

UP....Rishard Matthews...deface number one for the Titans.

UP...Tyler Boyd...Sanu and Jones gone, Eifert hurt, only has to outplay Lafell. Lots to like here.

I'm not sold on Matthews. Low volume offense with Walker and Sharpe to feed.

DT should be on Stock Down imo (i think he will be fine, but panic has lead to a drop in cost to acquire him)

As well as Lat Murray

Stock Up, Abdullah maybe, Josh Gordon for sure

Question is, is his stock up this summer? I dunno.

Boyd for sure.
Matthews stock is down, IMO -- and moved inversely to the Sharpe hype. I agree that the Titans' offense won't produce a ton of targets, and that Sharpe has shown himself to be the most dynamic receiver on the roster, but actually think Matthews is getting a little underrated given all the talk about Sharpe. Both these guys will produce, but get the feeling that Sharpe has the skills to do more consistently.

Comment on Lockett -- definitely stock is cooling, but I am a big believer watching this guy through last year and this. I think it's a breakout season for him. He has the athleticism and skill set to be what Baldwin was last year, and Lockett is that more efficient on what I believe will be a bump in targets than he had last year. As Baldwin regresses to mean, Lockett will fill that gap. Just a gut feeling, but watching him, he's the kind of guy you will need to feed more given his ability.

Funny about Latavius Murray -- stock was low-ish despite his finish in Top 10 last year, as most think it is not repeatable, and strong showings in the preseason from DeAndre Washington and Jalen Richard proved the Raiders have some potential in RB depth. But most feel that despite this, Murray is the main lead back -- things may change, but almost feel at this point, Murray's stock as slightly risen because of it.

Forsett is a guy whose stock is so highly volatile given the unknowns, hard to know if it's up or down but it's definitely moved. I think in the end hw'll be the most effective of a constant all year RB committee.

Terrell Pryor is another guy whose stock has risen given performance in preseason
