supplemental draft today (1 Viewer)

Maybe Cris Carter's drug problems stemmed back to his college days? Not sure.
Actually Buddy Ryan did Cris a HUGE favor by cutting him so he could clean himself up.Many people wondered why Ryan cut him and let him go to Minnesota.

That info was kept pretty quiet until Carter retired, or at least near the end of his career.
?? Ah NOOO. That was public knowledge years ago. I knew about it when I visited Minnesota for Randy's first ever football game which would have been 1988 I guess? From what I remember, that cut made him realize that he was very soon running out of options in life. Minnesota signed him and he cleaned up his act. I was lucky enough to have bumped into Cris in the mall of America and got his picture taken with me. I have it hanging in my wreck-room downstairs.

It was Carter himself that revealed this fact.
Does it really matter who revealed it?
Was that really worth a post?

Brooks is on Sirius NFL right now. He is definitely a Bengal. Brooks confirmed it was a failed drug test for marijuana that got him the boot from VT.

I am shocked with all the bad pub in Cincy for their current criminals that they would add another questionable guy.

Looks like Marvin really wants a 3-4 D.
Hey man, he might've been kicked off the teams for drugs and all, but at least get the school correct. I know UVA/VT isn't exactly Ohio St./Michigan, but its at least Oregon State/Oregon, so give the Wahoos some respect. THE MAN WENT TO UVA!

so only Brooks was picked?

Did he go in the first round to the Bengals?

The other six players in the draft, now free agents, are former North Carolina State running back/wide receiver Richard Washington; Texas defensive tackle Marco Martin; Connecticut offensive lineman Craig Berry; Texas fullback Ahmard Hall; and linebackers Jason Berryman of Iowa State and David Dixon of Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College.
any of these new free-agents worth a look?

That Dixon kid had freaky measureables, but at his workout, he didn't match them. Berryman and Hall probably have the best chances to stick. This is just what I've read, not an educated opinion or anything.

I like Marvin, but for him to say character is a priority is now a joke.  Talent is the priority.  They all have the latter, but the former is somewhat questionable.
Agreed. I never thought I'd say this, but I look forward to seeing the Steelers crush the Bengals in 2006. The Bengals are nothing but a bunch of scumbags. I can't stand Pittsburgh, but at least they are a classy organization, with the obvious exception of Porter.

And Santonio.

Ive always thought Ward was a turd too. Team player, but still a punk.

This is pure entertainment. I guess the Bungles Org thinks they can turn these guys around. Just ask the Portland Trailblazers about the effects of bad citizens on a team. This pick just makes me laugh. Just when you think the Bungles have turned the corner, they pull moves like this. Nice work.
But, they have a smart, hard working leader in Carson Palmer. the team doesnt revolve around all these other role players.

Yep it was public knowledge back then. He didn't actually get cut however, he got traded to MN for $100. Being originally from MN I remember all the jokes about getting the guy for $100 and paying too much... turned out to be a great deal after he cleaned himself up!

The Bengals would have been in the last group of Round 3. So obviously the teams that were expected to pick him (Miami, SF) didn't want to use a first day pick.

THe Bengals and Marv Lewis have now drafted Chris Henry and Odell Thurman (2005)

Frostee Rucker, A.J. Nicholson (2006)

Ahmad Brooks (Supp. 2006).

I like Marvin, but for him to say character is a priority is now a joke. Talent is the priority. They all have the latter, but the former is somewhat questionable.
the talk was a 4th yesterday so maybe Miami and San Fran were holding out. I thought Cincy would take him originally. Just too weird that he met with Marvin for dinner, their LBer coach did his workout in front of all the other teams and Hunley(Hundley?) loved him. I don't know about the character. Seems like Henry was a little blurb around draft time that kept getting repeated. Ahmad has been hounded about this for months and has been the center of conversation for a few months.

He's really been put under the microscope already while maybe Henry thought he almost got away with it by being drafted. Not sure just feel like Ahmad has taken a big hit already and hope Marvin gives such a big hit to Henry.

THe rumors are that Groh has NOT been pimping Brooks.  He kicked him off the team.  I would think for his recruiting, he would want Brooks to go high, but I think he has been giving his friends the scoop honestly.  Brooks has been a problem at Virginia and the rumor is that he was finally kicked off due to drug issues.

Brooks has first round talent.  I see him as a fourth round supplemental pick.
:goodposting: I'm reading the same things, that Groh has not gone out of his way to talk up Brooks. As T-Man mentioned, this makes a lot more sense considering Groh kicked him off the team.

Lenny P has a good article on ESPN.com today about the supp draft and it's history. I wasn't aware that Cris Carter was a supp draft pick.
I don't think that's true because of all the interest by his buddies. Parcells, Mangini, Romeo, or BB wouldn't have been interested then and would have trusted his opinion then. I'm not saying Groh praised him as a person for sure. We don't know that but we do know he created an interest amongst his friends. I can't imagine a 100% negative report would interest those guys

I don't get that. I'm not a Steelers fan, and actually despise them as any Browns fan should, but I never had a problem with Hines Ward. He is a hard working player that has fun on the field. I know a lot of people rip on him for crying when they lost the AFC Championship game in 04 but he wanted to win it for Bettis because he thought he was retiring. It's not like he got mad, and choked his coach or beat his wife.

a possible reason for the bengals picking up Brooks is that Odell is suspended for the first 4 games because of a failed drug test.

keeps getting worse for us bengals fans.

They need a team motto "JUST WIN BABY", oh wait the west coast criminal crew has that...

I can see Dog the Bounty Hunter moving his show to Cincinnatti next season.

so CIN reloads the LB position after thurman is suspended... for another player with a history of suspension... BRILLIANT!

:goodposting: How fitting that Thurman is suspended for 4 games the same day they use a 3rd to grab another pothead. Turd central.

Here's a decent recap from the Cincy press:

"If the Bengals sign him, Brooks will become another talented player with a checkered past on the roster. Wide receiver Chris Henry, though not yet medically cleared, was arrested four times in less than seven months from December through June.

Third-round rookie defensive end Frostee Rucker faces spousal abuse and vandalism charges in Los Angeles County, stemming from an alleged incident in August 2005 with a now ex-girlfriend. And fifth-round rookie linebacker A.J. Nicholson was arrested for theft charges in Tallahassee, Fla., and was dismissed from the Florida State team for an alleged sexual misconduct before the Orange Bowl."
