Supporting a college football team that wasn't your alma mater- ex (1 Viewer)

Maybe this is isolated to the south, or just Alabama, but Alabama sidewalk fans are generally a ####ty bunch.

Story time:

At home from college, working at a domino's as a driver. A fellow driver, in his mid 40's, who had decided to make a career of delivering pizzas, informed me Auburn was a "cow college" and terrible place. Let me repeat, a career pizza delivery driver/Alabama fan told me Auburn was ####ty.

Couple of years ago I was pumping gas, when another bama fan decided to walk up to my car, wearing only jorts and an orange construction vest, yell Roll Tide at me because I had on an Auburn shirt.

These are only a couple of countless stories I could share about that fan base. Incidents likes these over the past 20 years are the primary reason I really don't like sidewalk fans.
Is it true that outsiders moving to Alabama get peer pressure to pick either Bama or Auburn?
Yeah my wife got this when she first moved here prior to us starting to date from the kids at her school. She is a Mississippi State alum. She pulls for Auburn when they're not playing her school. She went with me out to Phoenix for the 2010 season BCS game and would have gone with me last year to Pasadena had she not been quite pregnant. I'm on the hook this year to going to the games if Miss St backs into one of the playoff spots.

It is mind-boggling to me how someone could root for a team they've followed their entire lives over one they had probably never heard of five years ago.

Wait, no. The opposite. Whatever the opposite of mind-boggling is, that's what that is.
It's not a professional team. It's a school. Comprised of mostly nitwits. Who aren't the best in the world at what they're doing.
You just described all Public Defender's offices
And, not surprisingly, most offices don't have throngs of fans who blindly follow them.

Are you not allowed to become a fan of a college team until after you are accepted to that school? College football is only for 18 and older. Sorry, kiddo. You can't root for the school your family has attended. You can only root for the school you go to.
This should go for pro teams also. Unless you have worked for one of the 32 NFL teams you should not be allowed to root for that team.
these were both essentially my point.
It's perfectly acceptable to root for a team to win - whether it's a college you didn't attend or a professional team.

It's not acceptable to treat winning or losing as a serious matter that has some bearing on your personal life.

I have been a Boise State fan since 2001 when a group of friends did a dynasty on college football for PS2.

I chose Boise cause they sucked and had a blue field. Watched some games cause they played a few a year mid-week, liked their style, been a fan since.

I should kill myself though since i have never even been to Idaho.

Went to a school that scratched its football team a few years prior to me arriving (UCSB). Tried rooting for closest UC school (UCLA) but found that I liked Texas better for whatever reason. Been a fan since, and made living in Austin for 6 years pretty f'in rad.
Love the Gauchos!!!!!!!

Undefeated since 1992!

If fans weren't allowed to root for a school they never attended, you'd have to cut Alabama's fanbase by about 60%. I grew up in the south and am friends with at least 2 dozen people that are "die-hard" Bama fans. 2 of them attended college at Bama, 2 more have a family member that attended. Of the remaining 20+, at least half of them have never attended a game on Alabama's campus.

My personal rule is, if you've never attended one of their home games (college or pro), you are a sidewalk fan
