Survivor Season 48 - David is 1 Angry Dude (7 Viewers)

@Pip's Invitation I know you listen to podcasts and such so may know this answer. Any idea who the captains were for the teams and why they didn't show it? And Sue had to be the last pick unless she was a captain.
CBS put the schoolyard pick deleted scene on its website: https://www.cbs.com/shows/video/IxYCMgqXX74sAon5v7_NG8UkWvx67D_0/

Teeny (yellow) and Tiyana (blue) were captains. The first person picked on each team then chose the team's next person, and then that person chose the next person, and so on. Sue was the last pick on yellow and Andy was the last pick on blue (and overall).

Jeff said on his podcast that they generally prefer to draw rocks in these situations to enhance the randomness of it all, but they chose to do a schoolyard pick in this situation because it might get players to reveal their thinking about who they respect and want to work with that they might otherwise be cagey about at this stage. They did intend to include this in the episode but because there was "so much strategy," they didn't have room for it.

Did not have a reference to KirK Hinrich on my "Things I'll hear on Survivor" bingo card. Rome spent the season being my villain, and they let him go out in a blaze of glory. I think the producers saw this and said "No way to build drama with this one" so they just piled everything on top of Rome. You can tell Rome is an e-sports commentator because he is just a non stop hype machine with little substance underneath it. Like many people, he has gotten too comfortable saying things in a virtual environment that just wouldn't fly in a real world scenario. He even tried to play the victim role saying how he felt Sol was berating him because of his lack of size. Now Rome didn't really feel like a victim, as he told the cameras he was playing it up to get people on his side, another mastermind move as he's playing the game on a whole nother level.

Then tribal happened. Again he is completely oblivious to what is going on, and Jeff has to know the impending doom that awaits Rome. He allowed Rome to sit in the seat and talk for a bit. That meant a lot to Rome, and it was nice of Jeff to let him do that. Rome was clearly shocked on what should have been an obvious blindside, but he was the exact opposite of last week's victim Anika. He was gracious in exit, and some may say it was fake but it felt pretty authentic to me. He thanked Jeff again for allowing him on the show and for having the opportunity to sit in the seat, even if less than a minute. Rome was entertaining to watch as a victim you love to "hate" (just using the phrase, never hated him), but had a really nice exit moment. I'm not even sure he's cringing as he's watching this back, I think some people just have different personalities, and that's ok.

The merge was pretty interesting. A big sign on the beach that says "There's an advantage, Go!". My initial reaction was to question if I would go look hard for it, worrying about a potential target. But it is really a short term advantage good for only the next event, so no harm in looking. The survivors must have had reservations about it, as Sol said "We looked for a minute and stopped". Genevive dumbly asks Sam "Hey what's that buoy", and Sam replies in an even dumber way "Oh I think those things are just floating all over the place". She finally decides to get wet and get the advantage. And it was a pretty good one, she guaranteed herself a meal and a good shot at immunity. I also liked the short interaction between Sol and Sue. "How old are you?" 45. Sol gives a slight head turn and says "I'm 42, we look good for our age!" Watch out for that lightning strike Sol!

I would have liked to see the schoolyard pick as well, and read @Pip's Invitation recap but haven't watched the video yet. I think those schoolyard picks are interesting because they reveal a pecking order that may be illuminating to players. Sue was an obvious last pick but I bet Andy was shocked he was a last pick. He shouldn't be based on his challenge performance (which I think he acknowledged last episode that he just sucks at challenges). Poor Andy then realized later in tribal that he was the backup choice, which will be sure to set his paranoia off again.

I thought the blue team had enough of a physical advantage that they would win, but good on yellow for using teamwork to get the players over the obstacles, then Kyle and Sam methodically moved through the puzzle maze. At some points, I thought Rome and Gabe were trying to launch the ball in the air over the puzzle walls to land in the center. I understand that level of rush to make up ground at the end, but they were jerky throughout. We know Rome but I didn't think Gabe handled the pressure well. It was probably annoying to hear Sol's advice, but I think that put separation between those two.

Man Sue is a bad player. The tribes are merging here? Let me go run out to the well and get red paint all over the place again. The other survivors pieced together what her tribe did not, there is a pot and red paint buried everywhere. Her tribemates finally realize "Wait, Sue didn't die from that amount of blood loss and medical never checked on her, perhaps she found an idol covered in red paint!"

Part of Rome's mastermind play was to turn people against Kyle, which is actually a pretty good target because I think Kyle is probably the best all around at challenges there. When word gets back to him, I loved his self assessment "People know that I'm the most honest dummy out here". Yep :) I do like Kyle but don't think he'll be around near the end because of the challenge threat and his lack of strategic chops.

I think the amulet trio was smart to get rid of the amulets immediately, although after votes started being read I bet Andy wished they played it on him instead of Teeny. He will probably wonder if the other 2 amulet people knew the plan and didn't tell him, further eroding trust and tuning up Andy's paranoia. Also, seems like Teeny was getting smashed on the reward "I need a friend".

ETA: Oof, I just watched Pip's video, that was awkward but it would have been interesting to watch in the show. Confirms my belief that paranoid Andy will be coming out soon. Although I guess it's not fair to call it paranoia if they really are out to get him :)

Updated tiers:

  • Rooting to win: Sol and Kyle. At this point I think Sol makes it further but not sure either can win.
  • Like the players, could root for them someday - Genevieve, Sierra, Gabe, Rachel, Teeny remain here. Gabe on the border of dropping down for me.
  • Jury is out or neutral - Caroline, Sam, Andy. I think Andy may go back into distress world, which I will not enjoy and he may move down quickly if that occurs
  • Lean towards not liking - Tiyana, there's just something about her game play that I'm not vibing with
  • Don't like - Sue

I thought yellow tribe brought the chickens because they were expecting a merge. Really shocked that Jeff negotiated at all. They admitted they were not going to kill the chickens, and the chickens had only provided a few eggs thus far. I was surprised the yellow tribe didn't take Jeff's counter, and then even more surprised when Jeff met them halfway at 18. It would have been interesting if Jeff would have said "We'll give you the eggs, but the other tribes both get one of your chickens". Would they take the sure source of food even though their opponents would get (and presumably kill and eat) the chickens? I'm wondering now with the looming merge will they eat all 18 eggs as soon as they can cook them, or do they take it with them to the merged tribe?
Charlie from 46 is the alum on Probst's podcast this season. On this week's episode he did the math and said the calories from 18 eggs is still way less than the calories from 3 chickens, so Jeff made a good deal.

I do like your suggestion about offering the chickens to the other tribes. The whole point of the chicken reward is to force the players to make potentially uncomfortable decisions, and this would give more of that.
I thought he would offer them to the other tribes toooo....

Just watched, my random thoughts:

Look. Rome was rough for me. As a fan, i could never get over how he tried to roll over Sol a few episodes ago. It would have taken every ounce of resolve not to punch the dude in the face. Having said all that, they did him wrong this episode. An entire episode of just hammering him. Shame on u Survivor.

Loved the blindside.

Enjoyed the clip of them discovering the red paint and pottery. Kinda fun. I'm also 100% convinced I would solved who was behind it. She is a bad poker player. Her expressions screamed guilty.

The episode of Rome overall, was a bad one. Do better
disagree....Rome deserved a whole episode showing how big a douche he was......

Yeah.....that guy was the worst. Unless he's your cousin or something, I dont see how you can feel he didn't deserve that exit.

He was an absolute dirt-bag towards Sol on multiple levels. That whole following him around 24/7 and taunting him because its on TV and he knows he can't do anything about it act was as bush league as it gets.

Dude got plenty of snarky laying on the beach confessionals bragging about how he was running the game. You're gonna pull that move on day 6....you better make a deep run.

In the real world he would not have done any of that because he would have gotten a beat down.

Excellent episode on how it played out.

Sol did what was best for his game and the show. Let them turn on each other. Don't reveal it for as long as possible to avoid being a target for making the biggest game move.

Batboy even voted for T as her closest ally.

This one seems a little manipulated. There just happens to be an advantage that was perfect for the one person who was sure to be going home. Wasn't a fan of this episode.

If they really manipulated like this, they would have given Parvati something more useful than an idol nullifier in Winners at War. They also would have told Kellee to play one of her idols at the Island of the Idols merge.

Agreed that it was 'too perfect'.
Wish it was good for more than 1 tribal to see if Sol had a dilemma. Would have liked to see how he slipped it into their belongings with a full cast all around.

On the podcast, they discussed the advantage as a derivative of one used in a previous season (45?).

44. There, the winning tribe had a competition to find it, and the winner (Heidi) had to announce what she was doing with it at tribal.

That was a great episode. Would've been even better if they had to vote right away and didn't get to strategize.Sucks that Sue is so terrible no one even considers voting her off.
They make such decisions based on what’s better TV. It was better TV to have them scramble.

Tiyana giving a speech to Jeff while everyone else was behind her whispering was gold.
Tiyana crying was awesome. I didn’t like her at all. She reminded me of that girl who hated the guy who got a second chance (hit his head and got pulled from a prior season). I don’t like players that are so hung up on one person that they don’t like to the detriment of their game. Tiyana had Gabe on the brain and she couldn’t even fathom using him as a shield. I couldn’t believe she was shocked at all. She was throwing Gabe under the bus to everyone she talked to including the other tribes and she had zero clue Caroline was with Gabe and Sue.

Also, I didn’t get her thought that saving Rachel helps Tuku 4 instead of being Tuku 5 and split then or try and recruit someone like Andy or Sol, etc. Always better to have as higher numbers. A lot easier for the other 7 to pick off the 4 Tuku one by one.

A very good episode I thought with a lot of strategy being thought about by all players. I know Rachel's heartsank when the random rock draw put her as the only one with all 5 tribe members. I thought Kyle would pull out the immunity win for the team just because he seems to be the best at challenges (which means he'll be high on the list to go when he is vulnerable) but Genevive and Teeny pull out the victory for their team. Kinda weird that Kyle gets credited with an immunity win when he actually finished 3rd. Not sure if Teeny and Genevive both get credit for wins as well.

Both Gabe and Tiyana pickup on the fact that if they vote out Rachel, it would incentivize what would have been two 3 person tribes to combine and pick them off. Separately they pitch their plans and both of them make really good pitches. This has to make Rachel feel a little better, as why would they go to her with competing plans. She still had to be really nervous, because at the end of the day perhaps it is easier to just go with the simple plan.

Andy started off the show by realizing he was the backup plan. I thought Sol oversold the idea of it being Sam who came up with the plan, when he just agreed when one of the ladies brought it up. All fair in love and war though. Andy then goes through some sand calculus and then chats with Genevive. She pretty quickly recognizes him as someone who can be used, but later in the episode acknowledges he is a handful. Andy was the first one off in the challenge again. A poor showing for a 31 year old male who appears to be in decent shape.

Sol was basically sleeping on the hidden advantage, but then hides it quietly and shockingly tells no one he found something. He keeps this act up after he sends the advantage to tribal. Nicely done Sol. I loved the look on his face and the "What???" when it was played. Hopefully he'll turn this into something, I would love to see an alliance with him and Rachel in it.

I loved how Rachel played the advantage. She went along with it so long, I started to think maybe Sol sent it to someone else. The way she held off playing it though really gave her (and everyone else) a lot of intel on how that 5 strong tribe was playing. As soon as it was played though, I told my son that Tiyana was gone. It was based off the conversation she had with Caroline, who hesitated on voting one of their own off knowing that the first 2 targets would be Gabe and Kyle. I figured her math at the end would be to leave those 2 in the game because they would be on a hit list before her. Well done Caroline.

Sue is worthless, they barely ask her a question at tribal. I think she still has the "blood stained" idol but who knows if she will play it correctly.

I did feel for Tiyana, that was a genuine heartbreak for her.

Updated tiers:
  • Rooting to win: Sol and Kyle. Moving Rachel up here, grace under pressure.
  • Like the players, could root for them someday - Genevieve, Sierra, Gabe, Teeny remain here. Moving Caroline up as well and almost did a double jump for her.
  • Jury is out or neutral - Sam and Andy.
  • Don't like - Sue. This is the only person who if they won, would ruin the season for me.

I loved how Rachel played the advantage. She went along with it so long, I started to think maybe Sol sent it to someone else. The way she held off playing it though really gave her (and everyone else) a lot of intel on how that 5 strong tribe was playing.
The advantage wording/text said to announce that it is being played when specific words are said by the host. She had to wait.

Wow, I missed that, thanks. Not sure I remember an advantage that had to be played when Jeff said something.

ETA: I rewatched it, that part was added by Rachel as further good gameplay. She did that to cover the fact that she could have played it immediately. She also just said it was a safety without power instead of her choice. This also strengthened her gameplay by giving her an out with whoever she made her plan with. She played it as last minute, safety only. She could have risked blocking someone’s vote to get them out, but she would not have had that sure safe spot.

On my DVR it was 58:40 if you want to read what the advantage said. I don’t think they would give her additional instructions after she got it, I think it was her strong gameplay.

It was pretty obvious what choice she would make. Blocking one vote does nothing if there is a real possibility that everyone else is voting for you, which there was.

Yeah, there was literally no choice for her. She had no firm idea on the votes so it was a no brainer. I think she’s getting a little too much credit here. She basically got a use tonight only immunity idol in a terrible situation knowing she was the choice at that point since both Gabe and Tiyana came to her with competing plans.

Sol threw her a lifeline and her choice was to use it or drown.

It was obvious to us, the well fed and rested viewer who has both more and less information than the survivor. We’ve seen people make dumber decisions, I was glad she didn’t try to make a power move and took what we knew was the best choice.

Sol has it open plain to read in his hands when he sneaks off.

But what she is reading at tribal are the instructions for 'safety without power' (which is not on what Sol has plain to read). It looks like she has 2 pages, folded to the second part so she can read the instructions (that tell her how/when to play it). First half would likely be the instructions for the advantage of blocking a vote.
Off-screen - Producer/cameraperson with her when she initially read the advantage probably gave the instructions.

For an underused advantage, not every player would know what 'safety without power' means without asking someone, let alone recite perfectly what to do when you're nervous and hands are shaking. They would paraphrase.

You are right, they added an extra page. Here is an unaired clip:

This screams of the show meddling. I didn't like Tiana at all, but I would be really pissed when I re-watched the show and saw how everything went down.

Usually they are way more subtle about influencing the show.

You’re giving her way too much credit here. Even if they could choose timing to use it, why on earth would someone not wait until the last second so they can be presents for all the conversations. Playing it earlier and leaving and missing valuable insights would be idiotic.

This is a little funny. I was really hoping before they picked Andy last that team Blue would have asked Geoff if they could sit out someone on this challenge.

I gotta catch up on the thread but I just binged the whole season to this point. Some assorted thoughts:

  • Man I hated Rome right away and so awesome the way he went out that was awesome
  • I really like Sol
  • My wife and I know Caroline. She was the year behind my wife at Kellogg. Talk about athletically awkward in some of these challenges omg
  • The whole red tribe going with Rome for the initial votes was super dumb. Aysha easily could still be in the game as could Kishan (but man did he overplay his hand with Genevieve)
  • TK another in the long like of dudes who were too obnoxious and dug their own grave
  • Kyle winning too much immunity too fast. He could be noncompetitive the next five and everyone would still say he's the biggest immunity threat.
  • LOVE the Rachel save from Sol. Man that sowed some chaos
  • I was so glad the Pod Save guy got voted out first. Thank god I didn't have to listen to any more of him than that. He was great on Keeping it 1600 but when they left to do Pod Save he became soooooooooo self righteous all the time and I hate it
  • People left I like: Sol, Kyle, Sierra, maybe Andy (he's kind of hapless though), maybe Teeny (could go either way still)
  • People left I hope are out soon: Sue, Caroline, Gabe

Tiyana giving Jeff a rambling answer while seemingly blind to the conversations going on within literal inches from her is just a complete lack of room presence. and wildly funny.

Well Anika took that well
For someone who usually won't shut up she sure was at a loss for words after getting voted out. Has to be in the top 5 for sorest loser ever.
I thought Sam had to use or lose his idol last night and figured he'd play it for Andy and then vote Anika out.
Best part after all her bluster and bitterness was that they filmed her crying on the way out and made sure to put that in. She had no idea and thought she was the lead dog.

Honestly, it was her own fault because she’s the one that told the other tribes that Sam and Sierra were working together back when she lost her vote. Once Sam got wind of that, he realized there’s no way he could be the only guy in that foursome. He had to convince Sierra to stay with Andy.

It might have been editing but it was surprising to me that Sierra seemed so hesitant. It’s never good to be 2-2 and Rachel/Anika were 100% besties. Much better to be 3-1 and also know that you are part of the strong 2 in the 3. I think she knew that and the edit was to make us wonder but when they showed her saying she wasn’t sure she could look the girls in the eyes, I was thinking she might screw it all up.
I LOVED watching her get voted out. Maybe my least favorite from day one.

It was almost as funny as the second postmerge tribal in Winners at War, where Adam and Ben stayed seated and argued with each other while everybody else got up and whispered.

From her pregame content, I thought she was going to be an astute player. She was not.

So did Glasses Girl play her shot in the dark to use that down the line so nobody has any clue that she has an idol?
I'm guessing so, also the camera showed her looking at everyone's reaction when she wasn't safe. I think she would have played the idol if people appeared relieved she wasn't safe.
That's what I thought, that she played it after figuring out (probably from Sol) which way the other tribes were leaning. She played the Shot in the Dark to watch reactions, and if she felt unsafe based on their reactions, she would play it. This could help her down the line if they think she doesn't have a shot in the dark and they overplay their hand.

Unless I missed it, they didn't mention how long her idol is good for. Still surprised that she played the Shot in the Dark. I guess for reactions, but still mostly useless at this point in the game. Seems it could make them turn on her now knowing she has it gone. Unneeded attention IMO.

The Survivor Auction is always fun. I really like how they set it up with people earning money (except for poor Andy). I also like the execution of the person with the most left loses their vote. I'd have to pass on the grubs and the fish eye.

I was shocked Rachel was able to get the idol with seemingly a lot of people pretty close by. I really like Rachel and hope she is able to survive.

I've gone back to really not liking Andy. His bitterness towards Sierra and Sam was well founded, but how he portrayed himself was just off-putting. He now thinks he is a major player when in reality he went from being a pawn for one tribe to a pawn for another.

In the challenge, I predicted Kyle would win (I know, a real shocker) and Genevive. Also predicted that Andy would be the first to go, man or woman. Failed pretty miserably in the last 2. I was pretty happy for Andy that he showed competence in something for perhaps the first time this season. Also big props to Sue, who I still do not care for, but she dominated that challenge. Pretty impressive for a 45 58 year old.

Kyle already had a target on his back after 2 immunity wins but now even he realizes he's in trouble. But what are you going to do, not win and leave yourself vulnerable?

In one of the interviews, I told my son Sierra was going home, although now I can't quite remember what she said that made me feel that way.

I think Sol tipped Rachel off to something, which precipitated her Shot in the Dark play along with judging their reactions to see if she should play her idol.

The tribal was interesting with wondering if Rachel would play the idol (and then doing something I didn't expect) and the fact that we had a tie in which one of the final 2 were allowed to vote because the other didn't have a vote. Andy taking joy in being a "dirty player" again didn't sit well with me. Sierra was pretty graceful in exit and you could tell it really impacted Sam as well.

  • Rooting to win: Sol, Rachel, and Kyle. Moving Rachel ahead in the pecking order. It's going to be hard for any one of them to win and I think Sol might have the best shot.
  • Like the players, could root for them someday - Genevieve, Gabe, Teeny and Caroline remain. I think Caroline is playing a sneaky good game.
  • Neutral - Sam. He won't last long.
  • Don't like - Sue and Andy moved back down. I previously said Sue was the only person who if they won, would ruin the season for me. That's not true, I think Andy may be the worst. He's been inept and unstable the whole time, and is probably the least deserving person there.

I think the standard rule for idols (unless specified like a lot of the early ones in a season) is that you can play them until there are 5 players left in the game.
