Tablet information overload - please help (1 Viewer)

For those of us sick of lugging a laptop around but need the full Office Suite plus ability to plug out for powerpoints etc, what's the choice here?

For more robust work I can still use my laptop but want something for travel and everyday use that's light and under $500 ideally.

Dell windows tablets are nice for what you describe.

I know you want large screen shuke, but the iPad mini is awesome.

I just got two for my kids yesterday and had no intention of doing it. Target has them for 299 but you got a 75 gift card.

I went for cat food and felt like it was a pretty good deal.

You feed your kids cat food?

Yeah, the minis are the absolute perfect size.

I'm guessing you got a first gen on closeout and not the new one on some insane black Friday deal. Still a fine purchase.

Bought the Asus Transformer book today. Cheapest I had seen it was $399 on Amazon. Saw an ad that Office Depot had it for $349 with a $20 instant rebate. One local store had 3 so I went out to buy it. Windows, 10.8 in screen, 64 gig, preloaded with MS office home & student version. Haven't gotten to play with it yet but it had good reviews.

I don't care for the form factor of the windows tablets. The dell and Microsoft and Asus are all well Built and sturdy but I think they are all thick and the bezels seem huge to me. They are nice machines. The surface rt is the only way that I think would threaten to win any design awards.

A bigger bezel is most likely the ones you have. I wouldn't worry because the ones you bought are just fine for kids. They are fine for adults as well.

Perfect for kids? I have heard differently.

Shuke , you are overthinking it. Find one that is the size you like and a good brand (google, Asus, Samsung, dell, toshiba). Purchase.
I don't know what the "good" brands are. Also want to make sure I'm not missing out on functionality. For instance, that 10.1 Asus does not have an SD slot. Big deal?
Why would you use an SD card on this?

I've had the Kindle Fire, the Nexus 7, and the Nexus 10. In terms of hardware specs, they're all fantastic for the price. In terms of operating system, I much prefer the Nexuses to the Kindle, but I'm sure that plenty of people would be indifferent.

For me, the Kindle's inability to get along with Google was a pretty big handicap. The Google Play Store was inaccessible without rooting, and even ordinary Google apps like Gmail, Google Voice, Google Maps, Google Drive, and so on -- all of which I use heavily -- took some doing to install. You had to find a work-around because Kindle wouldn't allow any of those apps otherwise. (That was a few years ago; maybe things are different now.)
There's no way I'd invest in a Kindle tablet. The ereader screen is fantastic as an ereader, but that's it. If you're looking at one of the "better" tablets, you're looking at one of the following three:

iPad -- Gunz is a goon, but he's right that they're the easiest to use, simplest to configure, least likely your kids will screw them up. That said, they're a bunch more money than the others, and I'm not so keen on being trapped in the Apple ecosystem anymore.

Android -- lots of good Android apps, awesome integration with Google and the like, and price points typically way better than the iPad. After owning an android phone, I get it.

Surface -- reviews are fantastic, and I am tempted to pick one up myself if only to give it a whirl. I love the keyboard option. That said, this strikes me as more an adult-driven device than a kid device. But I haven't used one much yet, so I can't say.

Curious to know what you heard? Grandparents got our near-3yo a mini for Christmas. Expecting her to really like it.

Out of curiosity, why are you limiting yourself to a larger screen?

What is the app ecosystem like on the Windows tablets? I assume you aren't getting anything from the Google/android app store or the Apple app store -- does Windows have its own? Same offerings as the others?

More and more it's feeling like Android is the way to go on these things.

ETA:

Answered my own question:

"But as nice as the Surface 2 is - and it is - I don't really see why I would choose it rather than an iPad, or a cheaper but decent Android such as the Nexus 7 2 or even the Tesco Hudl. After all, Google Play and iTunes knock spots of the Windows App Store when it comes to apps and media. (See also: Top 8 best Windows 8 tablets: the best Windows 8 tablets you can buy in 2013.)"

Review here: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/videos/3491190/video-surface-2-review--10in-windows-tablet-offers-great-build-but-half-an-os/#ixzz2mE6wSsCa

The one bit of upside I really like on the surface is the good keyboard, but that's for my uses, probably not a 5 year old's uses, and even for someone who needs a keyboard, I assume I can get a nice aftermarket keyboard with some of the Android tablets.

So maybe this reviewer hits the nail on the head -- Surface is really nice, but why would I buy it over an Android tablet or iPad?

Not sure how people feel about refurbished or re certified, but DailySteals has the original iPad on sale today for $159. (90 day warranty)

Back to the OP.

Our 3.5 year old daughter pretty much took over my wife's iPad 2 a year ago. Seems Like a perfect tablet for her. She rarely holds it so the size is not a factor. She has it in the stand when she watching Disney junior and has it flat when she is playing a number or letter game. Not sure how much an iPad 2 costs these days.

No idea, which is why I'm asking if it needs one. To increase memory?

Our neighbor, whose daughter is in my son's class, has said that their 7" tablet just seems small for the books and apps her daughter uses for class.

7" may be small for apps for school. Hadn't considered that.

Doubtful the kids will need a ton of storage unless this is a primary school device where they are required to save a lot of items. Otherwise, moving data to a cheaper storage option (like a laptop) is very simple. I realize some people like to put a ton of music or photos or videos on their tablet but I have never seen the need. I put on what I want for a trip (for example) and clear it off when I'm done.

Depends on what/where you are going to use it. My tablet has 32gb built in and a 32gb memory card installed. Took it on the family vacation this past spring and had it loaded with ripped DVD's. (some files were 4gb+) I only had about 10gb's of space left.

You can also buy a headrest mount for any tablet, if you are going on long road trips.

Videos and books are the only things I load onto the device. Anything else (music, pictures) can be streamed. Streaming requires an internet connection, but that's what a cell phone with FoxFi is for. (Books can be read from the cloud, but they're so tiny, the ones you're actively reading may as well stored locally.)

And like you say, videos can be added/removed as needed. There's no reason to put more than a few hours' worth on there at a time.

I was at a friends house a few weeks ago and all 3 of his kids had iPads. Ages 3, 5, and 7. They knew how to use it for games, books, and drawing. It was pretty cool to see how easy it was for such young kids to work tech.

They had kid cases that were extra thick rubber with handles so they could hold them and drop them.

Nook HD+ 9" 16GB for $150. This is Google play equipped, so it's basically an Android, right? Or is it still not considered an "open android" tablet?

Is there an Android app like the Kindle FreeTime that allows a parent to limit the amount of time that a kid is on the tablet, as well as where the kid goes on the internet?

The older model has a silver/metallic type of border, the new one is completely black.

The older model has a dimpled back, the new one is smooth

The older model has NEXUS written across the top on the back, the new one has NEXUS written in the middle in landscape direction

The older model probably still ships with Android 4.1, the new one ships with 4.2 or 4.3 (depending on batch)

There's nothing wrong with the old one. The main benefit of the new one is a super sharp display but it also costs $30 more.

shuke -- here's a pretty good and recent top-10 list/review: link
The Nexus 7 review explains the old Nexus 7. I was actually going to say the entire article is a year old but the picture is correct for the new Nexus 7. Everything they say about it is wrong though.

EDIT: The article is a year old. Look at the dates in the comments

Is anyone else confused by this post? AcerFC mentions he bought two ipad minis at Target. 17Seconds is saying he got a first gen closeout that is running Android 4,1 and has NEXUS written on it?

When did Apple start running android on its minis.

Posts like this isn't helping Shukes confusion.

oh ####

I didn't re-read what I responded to over the weekend and thought it was a Nexus. Those are also going through a similar thing with both versions on sale, and I've been looking at it myself.

too much turkey

So on the mini, I figured it was an old one because of the price. The new one is like $450, the old one is around $300 and he got a $75 gift card. So he got a good deal on the old one, not the deal of the century on a new one.

dot. am in the exact same boat for my 3yo. im strongly leaning towards the kindle fire. free streaming movies on amazon prime is a huge plus.

im on an ipad4 retina right now, and am kicking myself for spending this much money on a tablet. i literally use it for netflix, web, fantasy football apps, etc. nothing that i "need an ipad for". my own fault, but theres no way im dropping apple money for my kids.

Not sure how close you are to pulling the trigger but $50 off the 16 GB Kindle Fire 7" HD and HDX ends today. I was in the same boat as you, looking for something primarily for my soon-to-be 3 year old son, and was leaning Kindle Fire. I jumped on the HDX for $179 last night.

its for their birthdays (March), so im just going to wait until after xmas to get something potentially used or refurbished. i would have pulled the trigger right away on that $99 from best buy, but i missed out. they use my wife's non-hd kindle fire and it does just fine

I've been close a couple times today, but I've convinced myself we need bigger than 7" THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID.

This is what I got for my son today. He turns 9 on Wednesday so hopefully the drones will deliver it here in time.

Does google play = open android?
Kindles are not full android. I would call amazon (seriously). They should be able to help.
I'm talking about the Nook.
Sorry. I have no idea. I really like the nook in the store but have no idea how much access it has to the app ecosystem.

Wife and I both have the Nook HD+ and they work very well for the kids. They are not open android (heavily on BN like the kindle is on Amazon) but unlike the Kindle you have access to the google play store. I rooted mine to make it more like an actual android tablet (which was pretty easy even for me) but the wife didn't want me to do her's and the kids have used both and like them a lot. Good display, easy to use, they can watch movies, play games and read books.

Sold. What did you have to root it to do exactly?
