Tablet information overload - please help (1 Viewer)

It's a fine machine shuke. You will want to confirm that the apps they need for school will work on it, but they should.
Does google play = open android?
Wife and I both have the Nook HD+ and they work very well for the kids. They are not open android (heavily on BN like the kindle is on Amazon) but unlike the Kindle you have access to the google play store. I rooted mine to make it more like an actual android tablet (which was pretty easy even for me) but the wife didn't want me to do her's and the kids have used both and like them a lot. Good display, easy to use, they can watch movies, play games and read books.
Sold. What did you have to root it to do exactly?
Sent you a PM.

Wait, no camera on the nook.

#### it. I'm buying my kids a ####ing etch-a-sketch.
True, no camera if that is of major importance to you.

I can't think of a scenario where I would be interested in my kids having any hardware that includes a camera and an Internet connection under any circumstances.

I've had the Kindle Fire, the Nexus 7, and the Nexus 10. In terms of hardware specs, they're all fantastic for the price. In terms of operating system, I much prefer the Nexuses to the Kindle, but I'm sure that plenty of people would be indifferent.

For me, the Kindle's inability to get along with Google was a pretty big handicap. The Google Play Store was inaccessible without rooting, and even ordinary Google apps like Gmail, Google Voice, Google Maps, Google Drive, and so on -- all of which I use heavily -- took some doing to install. You had to find a work-around because Kindle wouldn't allow any of those apps otherwise. (That was a few years ago; maybe things are different now.)
dot. am in the exact same boat for my 3yo. im strongly leaning towards the kindle fire. free streaming movies on amazon prime is a huge plus.

im on an ipad4 retina right now, and am kicking myself for spending this much money on a tablet. i literally use it for netflix, web, fantasy football apps, etc. nothing that i "need an ipad for". my own fault, but theres no way im dropping apple money for my kids.
I got curious and grabbed my wife's fire :excited: to see how it would actually compare to using the apps that i use on my ipad. most of the media and social media stuff (netflix, twitter, facebook, spotify, etc) worked great....but the biggest downside i saw was the integration with google that maurile mentioned above. the native email app only searches what is on the device, not in your entire gmail (like the gmail app on the ipad). There is no Google Drive app, only a web based app which is horrible.

Also, no official dropbox app which was surprising.

So i guess i was incorrect in my above post with respect to the kindle. For my needs, the ipad is better (although wish i wouldve went with the mini instead). But will still probably buy the kindle for the kids.

Im really excited to hear some more surface rt reviews.

Amazon must have moved a lot of HDXs. I just ordered one for a gift & received a Dec 13 delivery date, thats with 2 day prime shipping

Not sure how close you are to pulling the trigger but $50 off the 16 GB Kindle Fire 7" HD and HDX ends today. I was in the same boat as you, looking for something primarily for my soon-to-be 3 year old son, and was leaning Kindle Fire. I jumped on the HDX for $179 last night.
The 7" HDX is back on sale today for $183.

Amazon.com is continuing to offer customers new deals on its Kindle Fire HDX tablets, with the most recent promotion giving consumers the option of paying for the gadget in four no-interest installments. The Seattle-based online retailer will let customers who buy the Kindle Fire HDX before Dec. 25 spread their payments across 270 days. Through the offer, customers can pay a fourth of their payment upfront, along with shipping costs and any taxes that may apply.

The subsequent payments will then be automatically charged every 90 days. The deal applies to the 7-inch and the 8.9-inch version of the Kindle Fire HDX.

Through the offer, customers can pick up the 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX, which normally starts at $229, for $57.25 plus shipping and tax on the first payment. The $379 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX comes down to $94.75 plus shipping and tax on the first payment.

For anyone wondering if they can simply stop paying after the upfront costs, Amazon says it will deregister those users.

That "will block your ability to access Amazon content from your Kindle Fire HDX device, and suspend or terminate your Amazon.com account," the company said.

The deal is one of many Amazon has introduced over the past month to boost holiday sales of the Kindle Fire HDX. Customers who would like to take advantage of the offer can accept on Amazon's website.

Amazon is really pushing the HDX into the market

At what age would it be appropriate? I have a co-workers whose 12 year old girl has a tablet with a camera and an instagram account. I think it depends on how tech-savy the parents is. But at some age, the kids will have to leave the bubble.

From that link I found an incredible LA Times article with photos on the Dorner manhunt, thanks.

Is the Kindle Fire pretty good? Seems like an easy way to buy them.

Best Buy has the new Lenovo 8" for $200. Seems like a pretty good deal to me. Windows based.

Thinking about buying two for my mom and dad because they have Windows computers instead of iPad minis.

That Asus looks like a really good deal as long as Windows RT will work for you. I have an Asus T100, which is basically the full Windows 8 version of that tablet. The T100 has been a great tablet so far...love the keyboard dock.

So... why wouldn't rt work for me? Any reason?
It just depends what you're looking to do with it. RT looks pretty much the same as Windows 8, but the main limitation is that you can't load programs (i.e. .exe files) other than what comes pre-installed and what's available in the Windows app store. My brother has a RT tablet that he uses personally for mainly web browsing and music/video and it works great for him. I got a Windows 8 tablet because I also use it when I travel for work and need to be able to run certain programs, and I like the ability to install whatever I want on it. If MS Office, web browsing, and a few apps are all you need, for instance, it would probably work great.

I was looking for a new tablet. I was looking at the Kindle Fire HDX or the Nexius. I thought Kindle Fire would be the best since I have Amazon Prime and I can bundle with Amazon Fire TV for $279. But my main e-mail is through G-mail and I heard that could be a pain.

Reading up on the Kindle I found:

All Your Personal E-MailThe new e-mail app on Kindle Fire makes sending mail, viewing attachments, grouping conversations by subject, and syncing contacts simple. The app provides full support for the world's most popular e-mail providers—Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo!, AOL, and many more.

Anyone have experience with the new app? Is it more convenient then previously mentioned?

It's getting to the point where you can pick a size and price point and Samsung has a tablet for that.

Not getting why people want tablets for such little kids? We can debate whether a device is a good idea at all for a 3yo but why not let them use an old smartphone WiFi only?

If anyone is looking for a basic tablet and is on Verizon, they have and Ellipsis 7" right now for free ($10 per month charge to add a line). Has wifi and 4g. I picked up a couple this weekend. Not a super performance tablet, but good for someone looking for a basic tablet. Does have camera (not very good one), microphone and a SD card slot also.

Thinking about something for my 3 pre-teen kids. Their 3rd Gen iPod touches are dying (batteries, charging connections, etc) We are going to be doing a TON of traveling over the next year. 3 trips - 8-10 weeks, all automobile-based. I'd like to replace their existing devices, but am unsure of what to get. I think I will be staying Apple, since we have spent a bit of $$$ on applications, and easy to just stay where we are. We also have all of them on one appleID and they can share the apps (Nice and cheap!) I'd like to get something with a camera, since then they will be able to take some pics on our trips. (One problem is I'm not sure how fond I am of them taking their play devices into something like WDW or a National Park out west!) There must be an app for limiting everything except the camera!

Sorry to be long - a habit, but am I better off getting an iPod Touch (4th or 5th Gen) or an iPad Mini? Price differences rocket when you think about buying 3! Don't need anything more than 32g (what they have now).

TIA

ETA: You can limit access to one app, with 'Guided Access.' Look it up in Apple Support to see how to do it. Very cool.

I need help. I just downloaded a bunch of textbooks as .pdf files. I need something to read them on. Is this cool? The only thing I need it for is to read .pdf files. The size of all the files is around 3 gigs. And a 7" screen seemed too small for trying to read textbooks with.

I just took the plunge with the Surface 3 - and while there are still some quirks I'm working through, it's AWESOME.

Like 98% of the good of a laptop (and a decent powered one at that) and 98% the good of a tablet. Simply awesome.

Been a few more days. How is this thing as a tablet? As a laptop?

Really hoping Apple brings out a similar iPad model in the same price point.

b/c games are easier to play, movies are easier to watch, etc on a bigger screen...and I can get a kindle for $99. I don't have an old smartphone wifi lying around

I was going to get a Nexus 7 2nd gen to replace my 1st gen since it had been laggy and slow since installing the latest Android version. Completely sold out and the speculation is the Nexus 8 should be released soon. Guess I'll wait for that.

I'm using the Nexus 7 2nd Gen. Big fan.

Me and Mrs. SB both had 1st gens. She got a 2nd gen when it came out. I'm more of a "this old one is working fine for me so I don't see the need to buy a new one". Much like how my everyday sneakers are 2 years old and most of my underwear is older than that. I bought a Nexus 5 earlier in the year and had stopped using my tablet completely, but I'm back on it a lot lately and the slowness has been annoying.

That's a lot of tablet to haul around. Are you sure you need something that big?

My sneakers are older than I can remember and my underwear is only a year old because I came home one day and my wife had thrown out all the underwear I'd had since we got married and bought me all new.

The Nexus 7 2nd gen is pretty awesome. Of course, I got it on Woot for about 170. That helps.

Interesting that B&N stopped making Nook tablets and simply took a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 (7 inch?) and slapped their custimized software on it and are calling that their new Nook tablet. Price $179.

Thank you. I will go to WalMart and hold one before making a decision. I think that is a strategy some internet shoppers use. The 10" seems like it would be easier to read from. Especially at the gym and stuff, riding the bike or treadmill. Some of these textbooks are like cinder blocks - so I don't get the feel that they would lend themselves well to a 7" screen.

A 7" screen is perfectly fine for .epub and .mobi files because the font is adjustable.

For .pdf files, if you hate scrolling, the 10" screen is much preferable to the 7" screen.

Anyone have a Samsung Tab 4? Wife needs a new tablet. Currently has Toshiba Thrive 10.1 and it was great when it was new, but it is now slow and freezes up. She uses it for internet, videos and some games.

It ended up being perfect. Like Maurile said two posts up, the PDF files are so much easier to deal with on the bigger screen. I had no idea what I was getting into going into this back in August, and I am not a tech guy - I still use a flip phone, but this is a purchase I am still proud of. It was inexpensive as hell and gets the job done. And tech stuff can be really expensive.

I take it to the gym and use the Kindle app to read while riding the stationary bike. If you are like I was and didn't know about eBooks and such, the Kindle app is able to read all of the file formats. And to turn the page you just swipe the screen. It's so simple. You don't need an expensive tablet if all you want to do is read books.

I went from reading zero books per week to about a book per week, and it makes the time go by really fast, so before you know it 30 minutes is up. I'm up to an hour per day on the bike per day because of this thing. It's nuts. That's how Belichick walks on the treadmill - while studying the morning "clips" for the day and highlighting certain things he finds interesting.

Anyway, if you want a tablet to read books on, get yourself one with the 10" screen that is less than $100.

Interested in this as well. Trying to find a solid 10" tablet under $300 if possible, and this one was at $279 on Amazon recently.
