Tackles for a Loss? (1 Viewer)

I'm trying to make the case that we should add TFLs, which are now being scored by the nFL and supported by the MFL.

I'm having trouble, however, finding stats on TFLs to make my case. I looked on FBG, NFL, etc and haven't been able to find any stats on TFLs. Can anyone help me track them down? Or in general make the case for them, and how much they should be ranked compared to tackles and sacks?

There are currently no outlets tracking individual TFLs to my knowledge. I think MFL is likely manually entering them from the Gamebooks after the games are complete, but are not adding them to their stat pages. Our NFL stat contact hopes to have a program to list TFLs sometime this offseason, though the information may not be available on NFL.com until next season. I would imagine the game charting project at Football Outsiders is tracking the data, but how much will be made available, in what form and when is hard to know.Rozelle has been tracking TFL by team in the IDP Matchup Sheet released on Wednesdays and I did a quick review of TFLs less sacks in my column recently, but we have no other TFL data right now.I think they'll be a very worthwhile add to IDP scoring systems once they're able to be tracked on a weekly basis. They reflect good play and there's little subjectivity involved (other than who's actually awarded the tackle). I don't know that a TFL is more valuable than a tackle for a very short gain in all cases and any sack is awarded a TFL already (I believe a no gain is considered a TFL, but I'd have to check for certain). I think a small bump -- somewhere in the range of 50-100% of a solo tackle -- would be warranted, realizing that sacks will be worth more in that process as well.

Ahh... maybe it was next year, but I remember the interview one of you guys did with the NFL stats guy about how TFLs would be more "official".My argument is exactly that - that TFLs reflect good play and thus should be valued. Some of the question was at what rate - that is, should they be scored at the same rate as sacks or were they worth less. Obviously, the argument there is easier to make if we understand the ratio of TFLs per yr vs. sacks per year, and understand the impact on underlying value that it's actually going to have. So, for leagues that do track this, I'm wondering if they score them at the same rate of sacks, or if they just count as an extra tackle, or something in between.

I think Jene has this pegged. "I think a small bump -- somewhere in the range of 50-100% of a solo tackle"

We voted to add this in our dynasty league next year at a scoring rate 50% of a solo. As Jene stated every sack will most likely have a TFL.

Tracking it on an individual basis was just too much work. I can tell ya the average per team thru 15 weeks is 64.7.

cnnsi.com has the "stuff" stat which is tackles for loss on run plays only. Therefore, these totals do not include sacks or tackles for loss on a receiver. Espn.com has stuff stats on the player profile page for each Defensive player, however they don't award 1/2 tackles for loss and are generally inaccurate. Cnnsi.com will let you see the stuff stats for each player in their gamelogs. Here is an example:http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/...8/game_log.html

The reason I know tackles for loss on a receiver aren't included is because I emailed stats llc and asked them and they confirmed it is just running plays.

Hope this helps guys..

This has tackles for loss/stuffs:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/stats/bycatego...se&sort=128

If that link doesn't work, just go to Yahoo, NFL, stats, and pick tackles.

They don't give a tackle for loss for zero gain, btw, Jene. I only know this because I pour over those every week since we count them in my league! Something I discovered in all this is that every time a player gets a sack, he also gets a tackle and a tackle for loss. For that reason, we adjusted our scoring system once we added tackles for loss.

However, a chacun, son gout! (hey, Sr. DeLellis was right--I did use some of my high school French one day!)

Here is what MFL's scoring category says (#111):

111. Tackles for a Loss This is the number of Tackles for a Loss in a game by a defensive player. These are sometimes also referred to as "stuffs". Players can have 1/2 tackles for loss if they shared the tackle with another player. This stat is not updated during the games in the live stats. It is only updated after the games are finalized.
linkETA: So, does not look like being tracked; just being entered after the game.
