Talk to me about Kung Fu movies (1 Viewer)

I watched Iron Fist and loved it. In fact, I want to get into Tai Chi, but that is another thread. Iron Fist brought me to some Kung Fu titles on Netflix and I have enjoyed all. Looking for other movie/TV suggestions.

Movies I have seen: Ip Man 1,2,3

Kill Bill 1,2

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Sword of Destiny (really liked this one since it was English)

First episode of into the Badlands.

Whatcha got for me. Preferably on Netflix or Amazon prime for easy access.

It's not really Kung Fu, but Enter the Dragon is considered the apex of the 70s martial arts movies.

I'm not sure what's available on those services so I'd suggest looking for anything starring one of the following...

Jackie Chan
Jet Li
Donnie Yen

These guys are the gold standard of martial arts performers and most likely to provide you with a quality film.

HTH,

J

El Rey Network, 341 on Directv has the greatest.....

try anything shaolin, like 36 chambers, Etc.  crippled avengers.

Shaolin Soccer is awesome if you want something funny. Love that movie.

Edit: Just noticed this is on Netflix

Sorry, I read the first line
:hifive:

I was half joking. But for real, I agree. Those movies are awesome. He was also in the crouching tiger movie I watched. Along with an older lady actress who I know, but dont know where from

Back in the 80's, American Ninja was way better then anyone could have expected.

Actually, Enter the Ninja was the good one.  I loved that flick.  Part two was Revenge of the Ninja fwiw.

Started slow. Had to turn it off since I'm on a bus with 8th graders and some girl gets naked. Glad no one caught it.

Doing some interneting led me to want to find movies from Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen and Bruce Lee.

But propers to chem. The 36th chamber of shaolin came in number 1. Need to find that. Only have the sequel on Netflix. Now I feel like wu tang clan.

Michelle Yeoh?  Oh, could be from the Bond movie she was in - Tomorrow Never Dies with Pierce Brosnan.  If she's who you mean she's also in the new Star Trek series, at least the pilot.

The Rx is in.

M-E-T-H-O-D Man

for pure adrenaline and action, it is very hard to beat The Raid (and the sequel).

For a more family oriented movie that still has good action and good visuals, try The Forbidden Kingdom (Chan and Jet Li star).

If you are looking for something more artistic with crazy good visuals, try The House of Flying Daggers.

Everybody is always kung fu fighting.  And some of those cats are fast as lightning.  Actually a little frightening... if you ask me.

the 90's was great for Hong Kong kung fu flicks, not coincidentally as a young Jet Li started to gain popularity. check out some movies from that era:

  • Swordsman II
  • Bride with White Hair
  • Iron Monkey
  • Once Upon a Time in China (I, II, III)
  • Ashes of Time
  • Drunken Master II
  • Moon Warriors
  • Dragon Inn
  • Fist of Legend
  • Tai Chi Master
  • New Legend of Shaolin
  • Wing Chun

Brass Monkey is better

I'm honestly surprised no one has mentioned Ong Bak (1 & 2).

Fist of Legend is probably my favorite martial arts movie, but I also like the "Once Upon a Time in China" series if you end up liking Jet Li. For Jackie Chan, start with the Drunken Master series.

Lots of non-Kung Fu martial arts movies have already been mentioned. But you're specifically interested in Chinese kung fu films, search for Samo Hung's stuff from the late 80's-early 90's. That fat guy could fight his face off back in the day. Of course check out Jackie Chan's library from that time period as well. The Project A, Police Story, Supercop series are from his prime (and hilarious).

It wasn't a kung fu movie, per se, but Oldboy was a great film with some fantastic Kung Fu action.

The story is a little dark for some tastes, though.

If you're not hitting the late 60s/early 70s Chinese movies, you are doing it so wrong.

in Nashville, when i was a kid growing up, the local uhf station had a saturday double-feature with these films. it was the only legitimate excuse i had to stay in indoors as much as i did.

I know he's been mentioned, but a couple of Jackie Chan movies I liked: Drunken Master, Operation Condor (fight scene in a airplane wind tunnel is amazing)
