Tampa Bay Bucs thread: back to back to back to back NFC South Champs (2 Viewers)

Rumor Mill from Shannon and Skip

Brady tried to back channel his way to San Fran and there were reports right after he announced his retirement that he was still interested in a season near his home town or Northern California. Shanahan sent back messages basically declining the offer. This might be in print if Googled but I thought it was interesting.

Motivated Tom Brady says "oh yeah, you don't think I can do it one more year, well watch this!"

Just some silly gossip probably not true but you never know where these rumors start.

They re-signed Stinnie and drafted Robert Hainsey last year.  My guess is those two will be the guards unless they spend an early pick at the position.  Zion Johnson has been mocked to them a lot at 27.

With Tom back I wouldn't mind seeing a WR like Burks or :gasp: a RB like Breece Hall.  @Capella  and I were talking about Fournette/Barkley in the SaQuon thread.

I think they need another quick impact weapon.  Jameson Williams intrigues me, but I don't know that he'll be able to make the year one impact they need coming off his knee injury.

How about instead of AB since he picked NFL suicide, why not  ARob? Robinsons is only 28, had terrible QBs, think he could be a great no 3, see if he wants to try and win a Super Bowl. Also have Godwin coming back off a knee injury and might take some time, they need more than a spare part at WR to make this work.

Have to think they’ll go after some guys above and beyond last years run it back roster.

I just heard all about this like an hour or two again because I was late on the draw this morning.

This is so funny. I can totally believe it. Brady/Arians should be an interesting dynamic going forward and one to watch, in my opinion.

I think it was more that they franchised Godwin again. Once they did that instead of signing him long term they couldn’t use the tag on Davis.

Does feel like CD took a homeTom discount.
I’m sure Gronk will too.

All these guys want a ring (or another ring) and they all know how close they came.

I doubt they get Lenny at a discount, but they might.

James White just wrote from free agency saying hello. He's past his peak or prime, but maybe he still has some left in the tank. (I honestly don't know, and they'd need a two-down thumper in addition to White.)

RoJo / White would almost be a perfect 1-2 punch.

if Arians didn’t hate RoJo’s guts, that is.

The Bucs Secondary is a mystery at times for me. It would seem the Bucs did a terrific job of drafting in recent years with a lot of these guys panning out and starting for them in the Super Bowl.

CB-Carlton Davis 28th/116 and one of the issues must be injuries since he only started 10 games and is thought to be a pretty wanted free agent Cornerback set to hit the market. Davis was a late 2nd round pick in 2018 #63 overall and if he does sign elsewhere I think the Bucs might get a compensatory pick but I could be wrong about that.

CB-Sean Murphy-Bunting($3.3M '22) 90th/116 and battled injuries all year, he definitely was not a shut down guy. Also a 2nd round pick in 2019 and has a year left on his rookie deal.

CB Jamel Dean ($2.75M) 19th/116 Saw extensive time last season and rated strong according to PFF, he was a 3rd round pick in 2019, the same year as SMB. In a perfect world, SMB bounces back to his 2020 form and Dean fills the void left by Davis and the Bucs are not having to overspend in their secondary where they have gotten by with a lot o f rookie deals to be able to afford Brady and all the other pieces.

S Jordan Whitehead 27th/92 and a 4th round pick 2018, same year as Carlton Davis and looks to be heading towards free agency. Bucs could lose or will lose 2 potential starters in their Secondary and they don't have a ton of cap space. They have a 1st and 2nd round pick but likely do not want to be reliant on the Draft and be forced into rookie starters in their secondary but they are drifting that way.

S Antoine Winfield Jr ($2M) 2nd/92 2nd round pick in 2020 and has been a massive find for the Bucs. They have had amazing success thru the draft stocking up their secondary.

S Mike Edwards ($2.75M) 47th/92 3rd Round 2019...again another guy they drafted in recent years still on his rookie deal and likely will see extensive time this season possibly filling in for Whitehead assuming he departs.
We got Carlton Davis back in the cuts, that is HUGE!!!  He starts for any team in the NFL and would be the No 1 DB on many teams had he gone elsewhere. Good job TB.

-JPP is gone and was the worst ranked DE of anyone rated on PFF last season, good riddance at this point. They need more than Shaq and Tryon if i have that spelled right, the rookie from a year ago was just OK, maybe Year 2 he improves but the Bucs could use some pass rush help.

I heard they could lose Suh? Who is signing him other than one of the few teams likely competing for a Super Bowl. Suh lost a SB to Brady, won a SB with Brady then lost to the team that lost to Brady in that 1st SB...he's worth more to the Bucs than probably most other teams, they should try and bring Suh back.

He will be 28 when this contract expires and he can dip in during his prime once again.

3 years? Likely no guaranteed money after 2 years, he will be inking a new contract in early 2024 most likely. You almost have to shave a year off of whatever number of seasons they sign for. 5 year deals are really more like 3.

-Wanted to share this for some POV on the Bucs and their cap situation.

The cap for 2022 is 208.2 million, and as of Friday, Tampa Bay was approximately $3 million over that mark and up to $6.7 million over when one factors in the team’s top 51 contracts, which is the effective cap the NFL uses until the first week of the regular season.

So how can the Bucs re-sign Gronkowski and some of the others when their cap situation is under water?

The team will be cap compliant when the league year opens at 4 p.m. on March 16, and if Licht and his staff want to, they could easily create tens of millions of cap space fairly quickly.

The first move is to reconfigure Brady’s contract to pay him more — he’s due an unrealistic base of $8.9 million this season — while lowering this $20 million cap charge. The way that is done is the team would have to add years to Brady’s contract and pay him much of that in the form of bonuses that prorate over several years.

The club could also add approximately $26.4 million in cap space by restructuring the contracts of just four players — receiver Mike Evans, linebacker Shaquil Barrett, offensive tackle Donovan Smith, and tight end Cameron Brate.

A restructure simply converts a player’s current base salary to their veteran minimum and pushes the remainder into a signing bonus that prorates over the remaining years of his contract.

The team does this to add cap space. The players generally agree to the restructure because it gives them money immediately, like right now, instead of waiting to get it over an 18-week NFL season starting in September.

The team can save $6.5 million by restructuring Evans’ contract.

The team can save almost $10 million by restructuring Barrett’s contract.

The team can save $7.3 million by restructuring Smith’s contract.

And the team can save $2.7 million by restructuring Brate’s contract.

Do that, and suddenly the Bucs are back in salary cap business.

Do that in addition to getting Tom Brady back, and the Bucs are suddenly championship contenders again.

The cap seems meaningless at this point. The Saints have been in cap Hell for 10 years and are sniffing around Watson.

The Bucs should be absolutely going full Rams and trading future picks for vets. Signing free agents. They’ve got one year.  Maybe.

Yes.

Also agree, but we'll see if he gets his stuff together. I'm holding out a bit of hope for that. It's really his last go-round in this league, all things considered.
He’s a solid runner that can gain tough yards. There’s a few landing spots where he could see volume.

He was number eleven in Bill Barnwell's top ten backs before the start of last year, finishing just outside the countdown. I went out and acquired him, and *poof*, he became a nonentity.

He actually would pull up last year with yards to gain and mysteriously go out of bounds. Like costing the team a first. It was confusing, less so when you chalk it up to a guy that was either going through the motions or didn't want to get hit. Truly odd. I forget what game it was where it was blatant, but even the announcers did a double-take at it.

I’ve always said he’s an excellent runner. Once he hits the hole he’s tough to bring down and he’s quick - a good back. But he can’t catch and he’s the worst pass blocking back I’ve ever seen in my life. Not only is he unwilling to do it he’s not even in the right spot a lot of times. Couple that with going out of bounds numerous times when more yardage was available and he’s very below-average overall.

I guess he’ll sign somewhere and maybe he still has a few big games in him but he’s not going to be anything major.

Not a fan of Russell Gage

700/4 B2B seasons in pass happy Atlanta and there was room or space for him to ascend with Ridley removing himself from the field.

This is not the kind of guy they need iMHO, would like to see a lot more for 1 more TB run. You have Godwin coming off injury, hope they are thinking WR4/5 with Gage.

Gage 3yr/$30M, ouch!

Sorry but you gotta call a spade a spade, was hoping it was just some 1 yr deal and they could release him if they must.

Maybe I'm off but I don't think Gage brings a ton to the team. And they are on the hook beyond Brady? That's serious money, they have real plans for Gage.

Gage is really good, you’re way off here. 3/30 is a steal.
Prove that Gage is good. They were down Ridley and he should have been able to post huge numbers in a pass happy offense but he didn't. He's thin and doesn't like to take hits, has a low yd per catch avg so he primarily is that stick receiver 3-5 yds within the LOS or just beyond 5 let's say. He isn't going anywhere after he catches the football. Maybe that's not something you mind for this skill spot but Brady has been making a living off his receiver turning short passes into big plays with Godwin and Evans and Brown until he quit.

I'm having a hard time warming up to him. You're thinking Edleman/White, short catch outlet, like a run but just keeps the ball moving...maybe that might work but based on what this Offense has been doing, that doesn't seem to fit. More of a New England style receiver vs what the Bucs have shown.

I think they could do better and need to for the last season. I don't see Gage at that guy but I hope I'm way off like you say.

After reading your post I googled Ronald Jones running out of bounds.  This 2 minute YouTube video of a handful of poor plays in just a single series vs the Falcons came up.  Pretty illuminating as to why Arians soured on him.  Has the running out of bounds you mentioned to not gain the first down followed by him missing an obvious hole which would have picked up that first down and then finally wraps it all up by totally whiffing on a block and letting Brady get wrecked.  Stuff like this makes me think there are hours of poor tape on Jones and that he'd be lucky to even have a market

That's the one. Oooof. Thanks for digging that up.

I’ve been saying this for 2 years, I am glad somebody else has joined the fight. He’ll find a team, but I doubt he finds many reps.

Cam and Shaq have restructured.  Need to get Godwin signed long term or probably will have to restructure Mike Evans again to get under the cap by 4:00.

He's pretty bad, I'm sure he did this more than once.

Also, they coulda kept RoJo all along, and I am wondering if Brady will be traded?
Not seeing him being traded, he helped lure players to return so would not be cool plus while we may never know exact details I said back when Brady initially retired he and Bruce were not getting along so great. Maybe Bruce is not feeling great so this has nothing to do with his relationship with Brady but one way or another I don't think Brady is stung over this news.

Now whether or not Brady will sign and extension and can leave after this year is the thing to watch but I think he's locked in for 2022.

Yeah - I was just thinking about the rumors last week that he might be dealt to Miami. I thought it was ridiculous then, and still do - but this is weird.

I hope his health is ok. He seems like an amazing person. That said, he drove me crazy these last few years and particularly 2021 with his inability to go for it on 4th and 2s etc. Hopefully Bowles is as aggressive as a head coach with the best qb of all-time should be.
