Tampa Bay Rays 2010 thread (1 Viewer)

Said it before...will say it again. BJ looks like a different hitter from the leadoff spot. Something just works better for him mentally.
He's crushing lefties right now, but he's still not very good against righties. I'll take what we get from him offensively, especially with this recent surge.

That balk called on Garza last week against the O's was one of the worst calls I have ever seen. Bases loaded and a runner comes home. Ridiculous!!!

Any chance Benoit is closing next year in Tampa or do they give Soriano a long-term deal?
Good chance of it. Soriano is probably pricing himself out of the market for the Rays at this point. Jake McGee could also be involved in that conversation.

Nice weekend  Went Fri and Sun. Sold some Sox tees to the stadium for the weekend (as usual with them and Yankees)...rack was still full as of mid-game last night.

Rays fans:

As a Jeremy Hellickson owner, I have to ask: What does the kid have to do to break into the starting rotation next year? Who's out?

Unless there is a trade or an injury, he will not be in the rotation to start next year. He will probably start the year in the minors again. The Rays love to push back their players free agency.

I think he makes the rotation next year. I think they'll trade Garza or Shields for a 1B/DH this off-season.

They've pushed back Hellickson enough.

This dude is like Rip Van Winkle. 2 RBIs then picked off on way to 3rd. No stop sign from the 3rd base coach? WTF?

Damn, Niemann went south quickly tonight. 1 run through 5, and then an implosion.
Is he healthy? This is probably my best keeper in Zilla league ($3), so I have interest in him being good. Control problems last game, tonight just got killed in that 6th. Best guess? Health related or just bad luck/out of shape?

Something's up. He didn't have any kind of rehab start...so most thought the game last week was a mirage. Last night is a concern...but he looked good thru 5. So I think most are assuming he ran out of gas.

This team really has been a joy to watch this year. Even when the offense struggles, they still find a way to win.

Ummm...last night's game was ineresting. Never seen that many homers by the Rays. Again, Dan "Rip Van" Johnson hit a homer. Once the Rays are done with the Red Sox, they should send his ### packing.

I hate Garza. I mean I REALLY REALLY hate this punk. Every damn time I bet on him, he pisses all over himself.

Blows a 4-0 lead tonight against a Red Sox team which was flat-lining. :wall:

Yea, the Sox are peppering the monster tonight.

Looking more and more like the Rays are going to be settling for the wild-card.

I didn't see the game on Monday...how bad did he look?

Not exactly a win you can feel great over, but I guess that's one more towards the playoffs.

Pitching has really taken a dump on this road trip. Went from a super-strength to wondering if they can cobble together a third starter in the ALDS.

Who will it be? Shields is terrible but experienced. Neimann has the potential but has lost it. And Davis is a rookie.Gotta believe a 3-man rotation will be the move regardless.

I would bet pretty heavily on it being Shields, even if Niemann gets straightened out. They'll want Shields experience out there, and he has tossed great games against NY and Boston this second-half. I imagine they'll find a way for him to start at home. It's not like he's been amazing there or anything, but a little bit better than on the road.

With the way the ALDS is set up though you only need 3 SPs usually. So, Price-Garza-Shields-Price-Garza sets up nicely.

Yea...with us being the Wild Card, it does make sense (I guess) for Shields to get a start at home in Game 3. Pick your poison at this point...but maybe something will click in.*IF* we advance though...do you stick with a 3-man rotation in the ALCS? Price would seemingly have the youth and stamina...although pitch count in Game 1 would dictate a lot.

If their hitting can keep up with good pitching (fingers crossed)......they are on their way. Davis looked pretty good today. I hope they sweep. Yankmees hands full with the Rangers.

ETA: Good to not see Johnson at DH.

Man...went from ready to hand the division to the Yanks at 9:30 last night to potentially being within a 1/2 game later tonight. 3 weeks to go....Davis can still work his way into the postseason rotation I hope.

Huge series starts tonight, so that means we'll get another half week on ESPN talking about attendance.

I love the teams in this area, but I'm done defending this yokel fanbase. Good crowd at the Trop tonight, but really bad attendance for the most part this year, and to make matters worse, 1/3 of the stadium empty for the Bucs game yesterday.People should point and laugh. It's pretty ridiculous.

So does Reid make the Postseason roster?
I highly doubt it. My guess as of today:PriceGarzaShieldsNiemannPen:SorianoBenoitBalfourWheelerQuallsChoateMcGeeDavisJasoZobristCrawfordLongoriaPenaJoyceHawpeUptonBartlettBench:BaldelliShoppachRodriguezJennings (for late-game speed)I think in the ALDS they will take away one of those pitchers (likely the SP that isn't in the rotation) and go with Navarro for catching defense. Then if they make the ALCS, they'll probably go with the extra arm.

Reds had 12K last night. In Majestic apparel sales (jerseys, player tees, etc)...for the year...the Rays are ahead of other potential playoff teams such as Cincinnati, the White Sox (in the huge Chicago market)...and are roughly 10X the size of the Padres.

Reds are drawing 3k more a game than the Rays are. 250,000 more fans. I don't have the numbers, but I doubt Cincy is a bigger area than the greater Tampa Bay area. I get the recession talk, the bad area, but the fact is the Rays have put a quality product on the field for 3 years in a row now, and still draw flies. And quite frankly, all the bad neighborhood talk went out the window when the Bucs only drew 40k. That team won the Super Bowl 7 short years ago. It's a dopey, bandwagon fanbase.

I think one of the problems is that Florida has a lot of transplants from other areas who already have loyalties to other teams.

Major problem for a team like the Rays, but the Bucs things particularly disappointed me. Team has been around 35 years now, has won a Super Bowl, has had Hall of Fame players come through here and has established roots in the area...and they only play 8 home games a year at a beautiful stadium. Just disappointing to see. I could see the arguments for why the Rays don't draw, but I really am surprised by the Bucs.

The Bucs are potentially the worst team in the league for the second season in a row, man...and being there it felt much louder than 40K. I think the 'real' fans showed up and many corporate fans stayed home.A lot of people on these boards blow off licensed sales numbers...but they usually mirror market or fanbase size, when teams are winning. So why are the Rays sales numbers bigger than attendance? The answer is obvious to me.

Wow, why does Crawford run there? The only upside is the possibility of a passed ball/WP, which almost never happens with Mo.

Great game.

I need to keep ripping on Johnson...he seems to produce when I do. What's with the golf swing homers in the Trop?

One day there's going to be a "Dan Johnson Way" around the new stadium, and it's not going to be hard to explain why.
