Tampa Bay Rays 2010 thread (1 Viewer)

It is almost like the Rays have too much talent with Rodriguez, Jennings, Hellickson all pressing. Really an impressive farm system over the last 5 years. The Yankees and Red Sox get older and the Rays just seem to get younger and develop talent.

Anyone got an update on Burrell? Looks like Blalock will be a FA by weeks end which I guess means Burrell is no longer in a platoon at DH.

With all this talent why are the Rays using slobs like Burrell and Blalock at DH?

One of the few positions the org is not deep in is over-the-hill, one-dimensional power hitters.

I agree Burrell is a slob but I have always been a fan of Blalock. His production is just all about opportunity. He battled back from injury in 2006-2007 and his numbers have always been very serviceable when he gets playing time. Last years BA is somewhat of an aberation when you look at his career stats. His biggest problem is he was injured during his 'prime' years but he is still only 29.

I really like Blalock to far exceed expectations this season for the Rays as long as Maddon is smart enough to play him. My guess is he beats Brignac out for the final roster spot.

Blalock's a pedestrian talent and a perennial 2nd half fader. He has no business making the TB roster over Brignac when they already have Aybar to back up 1B and 3B

I pretty much agree, but to answer this and an above comment, Brignac has the luxury of options still available.Part of the reason the Rays have been able to build so much depth is because of their wise use of options. Some team like the Pirates would have had Brignac on the opening day roster last year. Plus it doesn't make a lot of sense to keep Briggy right now. Rodriguez and Zobrist will cover 2B and RF, and the other can fill in at SS in case of emergency. May as well send the kid to AAA and let him hit every day.

Blalock out, Brignac in.

Little surprised, but the Rays are going with the strongest roster they can put together. Guess they don't want to give away any edge to begin the year.

Especially with the weak schedule they have for the month of April. Gotta get off to a good start!

so is Rodriguez going to be a starter to start the season? took a flier on him in my draft a few weeks ago and i am excited about his potential, if he is going to get reg at bats, may want to start him at MI over alcides escobar.

Rays are going to make the AL east very interesting this year, hope they take it over the empires

I'm sure someone else would have a better answer, but it appears that he'll be playing most days early in the season, but I think that's still very up in the air. There's opportunity with Joyce's injury, but Brignac making the squad complicates things. I don't know why they'd call up Brignac if they weren't going to give him a decent chunk of plate appearances. Seems like a muddy situation to me. I drafted Rodriguez hoping he'd give me some production until Kinsler gets back. I'm rolling with that plan b/c I don't have a choice, but I'll be trying to check each day to see if he's playing before I put him in the lineup.

I don't know this for sure, but I think they'll give Rodriguez the benefit of full-time at-bats in RF to start. They will probably mix Brignac in there on occasion to keep him sharp, and then put Zobrist in RF for those games.

They could go to a platoon with Zobrist at 2B and Rodriguez in RF against lefties, and Brignac at 2B and Zobrist in RF against righties, but I think they'll give Sean some regular playing time.

edit: Then who knows when Joyce comes back. But if Rodriguez is mashing, I'm sure they'll just leave it alone.

Sonny, I think they're a 90-win club, but that's a big number. I'm a homer, and I'll be the first to tell you many things could go wrong. CC could be a distraction, BJ could be terrible, Zobrist could regress, Niemann could regress, Davis could be not quite ready for the show and JP Howell is out 6 weeks.

But that's all worse-case. Unlikely a few of those happen, much less all. This is definitely the Rays most talented club though, and they pulled 97 wins out in 08 and still had 84 last year, despite some serious underwhelming performances.

I like the way Shields' looking so far. Got good command of all his pitches and he's painting the corners. I hope it's a sign of things to come this season. I love Shields.

ETA: I'm an #######. Adam Jones took him deep 30 seconds after that post.

Woah if Price pitches like this all yr than TB will make the playoffs over Boston. I know he gave up a 3B to one of the best hitters in the game but his stuff is electric tonight.

If Price and Garza pitch consistently like they did in their first starts, the Rays will make the playoffs. Price had the best stuff I've seen from him in the first six innings. Wore down a bit at the end, but that's to be expected this early. That slider is stupid. Granderson looked like a t-baller on his final at-bat.Good win. Three dash One.

So you think the Yanks are a lock for the division? Already?

No, I think the Yanks & Rays are clearly better teams than the Sox. That Sox lineup is putrid (relatively speaking)

Burrell's bat speed is obviously gone. He can't get around on a good fastball anymore, and he used to mash those. It seems like a better option would be an Aybar/Rodriguez platoon at DH and a Joyce/Kapler platoon in RF, with Zobrist sticking solely at 2B. Leave Brignac on the roster to cover 2B/SS offdays and any injury concerns...then send Pat out to sea.

But their defense could be tremendous, and certainly vastly improved over last year. For that reason, I think the Mariners, A's and to some extent the Sox (they can afford to pay for elite two-way players, whereas the A's and M's employ several more defensive specialists, e.g. Crisp, Gutierrez, Kouzmanoff, Jack Wilson) are the most interesting teams to watch this year, to see if good defense is as valuable as sabrmetric numbers say it is.BP has them ranked TB, Boston, NYY, but all between 96-93 wins. But, NY and Boston have the advantage of being able to make a big acquisition at the deadline, which is something that Tampa probably won't be able to do.

Not a terrible start, but not great either. Tough road trip with Baltimore and Boston coming up too.

Hopefully Garza is dealing tomorrow.

Wow Chaote sucks!
Yea, but unfortunately they don't have any lefties in AAA either who can get an out. Jake McGee is a year away. Have to hope Choate rebounds...he was decent last year.Another good win, but that bullpen is killing them. SP has been unbelievable though.

Didn't work for me either. And then I started Shumaker over him this week.

While we shouldn't get too giddy now over an Orioles sweep...it did just match the number of 3-game sweeps we had all of last season.

The good GREAT news: Boston blows.

The not-so-good news: Tampa won't be going away.
I said this before the year and I'll say it now. I fully expect NYY to win the East and Tampa Bay to win the Wild Card. I also expect them both to have the best records in the AL.

Well can't complain about the start. 9-3, 6-0 on the road. The starting pitching has been unbelievable. Offense has been tepid, but you have to expect it to pick up. Seeing Upton mash this week has been the best news of all.

Eckstrom is the worst player on the roster. Benoit has 12 Ks in 4 1/3 innings in AAA, so hopefully he is up soon.
