Tampa Bay Rays 2010 thread (1 Viewer)

First series win in Anaheim since '99.

Still don't quite get Joe's handling of Wheeler and Cormier....I guess he decided pregame that Cormier would face Abreu, but Wheeler looks so much better.

That was extremely bizarre. Joe is prone to doing that though. Great roadie.

We haven't needed any strategery in the bullpen, but we will eventually. I thought his handling of the same duo in that Royals game in Tampa may have cost us. You can't argue at this point though. Hopefully Howell's return solidifies the middle.

Rays nearing decision time on Blalock

It looks like Hank Blalock is forcing his way into the majors, and deservedly so. The guy is mashing in Triple-A. .366 with 4 HRs, 23 RBIs and a .425 on-base percentage.

It's time to end the Pat Burrell experiment. Poor average. No power. Can't run. Can't play defense.

It's difficult to improve this team much more, but this move would do it.

I can't stand Pat the Fat...but I'd be surprised if they don't go the option route instead of cutting him. SRod and Sonny are able I think.

So we ditched one anchor...now what do we do about Navarro? When does Shoppach get healthy?
I only watched until about the 5th today, but I saw Navarro make a pretty good catch on a foul pop up and an excellent throw to third on a wild pitch.I am far from a fan but with how Jaso's defense has been, I'm not sure we should be getting rid of Navarro anytime soon.

His bat isn't killing us at the moment...but it could down the stretch. .160 is pathetic. Shoppach is making a lot of money, and Jaso is making nothing. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Shoppach/Jaso platoon later in the season.

Not a big baseball fan but play fantasy (keeps me occupied in football off-season)

Was able to scoop up Bartlett in ESPN leagues... However I see his percentage of being owned each day drop from 100 percent to now 90.... Is there something I should know of? Is Brignac taking his spot or something?

He's batting .241 with 0 HRs and only 3 SB :goodposting:

Pnish hit it on the head...but he definitely won't be benched anytime soon, and I'm not sure how low he'll have to go to even get moved down the lineup. His defense is too valuable and he's still hitting in clutch situations. There is already a platoon at 2nd also...Maddon doesn't want both middle infield spots changing daily.

JP suffered a 'setback'...only throwing 12 pitches in a simulated game.
Bummer. They're definitely going to need to make a move for an 8th inning bullpen arm. It was going to be a necessity whether J.P. was back or not, but it's even more pertinent now.

This just isnt fair. Time to break this team up
Give us 5 months at least.
It won't be that bad. The entire starting pitching staff, Longoria, Upton, Brignac, Zobrist, etc will all be back, joined by Hellickson and Jennings. I think the Rays are getting Crawford's career year right now. Doubt he performs like this under the next contract. He doesn't really have "old player" skills. They'll replace him with Jennings for 1/100th the price.

Shields, Crawford, Pena all are not rumored to be back next year(is shields contract up?). But I would think you want to retain one of them to have that veteran presence. Hellickson and Jennings, will struggle like all rookies but they should eventually make a seamless transition as they are going to have more than enough seasoning in the minors. I know the motto for this team is "win it this year" but watching those two games against the Yankees has me thinking they are going to be around for a while, unfortunately. Solid ball club

Shields isn't a FA until 2015. He's not going anywhere with his contract.

CC and Pena likely the only significant losses after this year, and I wouldn't be shocked to see them re-sign Carlos.

Why is this unfortunate? It's a great thing for baseball to have a team competing with the Evil Empire at a fraction of the cost. The Rays have created a template for other small market clubs to follow. It's starting to get really old watching the Yankees/Red Sox throw 200 million dollar contracts at every big market free agent.

I thought Shields signed a pretty team friendly deal not too long ago? Jennings could step in for Crawford in 2011 if he follows the $$$, and I wouldn't shed a tear if Pena left. Personally, even after Carlos' two HRs last night, I'd love to see Blalock starting at first base. Pena's paltry mendoza line flirting and untimely strike outs/pop ups drive me nuts.

cuz hes a Yankee fan

What sucks is that we won't be able to give CC a proper good bye. The team of course won't admit he's leaving until after the season...and many fans will refuse to admit he's leaving until it happens. He's the best player in franchise history and was our only star for years...when no one even knew who he was. He's also the most popular and respected player in the clubhouse. He'll be missed...but happy for him to get his payday.

Would be great to send him off with a season to remember.

I'm not able to watch the game tonight so I'm following a play by play online. Just saw that Crawford and Maddon were ejected. What happened?

Outside pitch by Lester, ump calls a strike. Crawford starts acting like a thug, barking at the ump, eventually bumps him slightly (might see a suspension...debatable). Maddon argues further and is tossed

   I didn't see it, but CC is typically a pretty good guy. I'm seriously doubting he was acting like a "thug."

Ya, I was surprised too. To his credit though, it was pretty well outside, so even I might have acted a little thug-like there...

:lmao: thug.Sure, guy.
A few thugs on that team. Eating humble pie tonight.
I know you Boston folk hate black people. Just stay under the bed and it'll be ok. :unsure:ps, only 6.5 back in mid-May. Lookin' good.
that's interesting that you associate black people with 'thug'
It's only interesting since you called the black guy a thug. Guaranteed Youk wouldn't get that comment. He'd be 'feisty'. :lmao:

We all knew we'd eventually see an offensive downturn with the way everyone was hitting so well in the clutch. Still looking like nowhere to go but up with Barlett, Pena, and Upton hitting so poorly. Nice to see BenZo coming around.

Starting pitching still looks like the best in baseball...certainly the top 4, despite the whopping two losses in a row.

Garza needs a good one tomorrow. He's the ace now...good timing for it.

Garza always dominates the Sox, so I am already chalking that up to a loss (especially with Lackey's suckitude lately)

Before tonight the Rays were 95% per baseballprospectus to make the playoffs...

Just saw the replay of the rejections...looked like a much needed blowup by the reserved clubhouse leader and normally-controlled coach.

I like it.

even if it earns him a suspension?and I think you mean ejections...

:lmao: When the guy who never loses his cool loses it...something is wrong. That something was the ump. It could hurt without CC for a few days, but it could also fire up the clubhouse. They are already tight...but I haven't seen a lot of passion this season yet, since there really hasn't been a need for it.

Well...glad I didn't get to watch tonight. :broom:

O needs something...are we going to see Maddon go back to a conventional lineup consistently? Seems to be a lot of movement...does Jaso give Longo the protection Pena or Blalock would?

And the slumping label seems to be firmly attached to JB.

Sucky series, but they are still 7-4 against the Yanks and Sox so far this year, and 17 over. I'll take it. No need to overreact.

Pretty sure they are 7-5 Lost to Yanks @ home 1-2, beat Sox in Boston 4-0, beat Yanks in NY 2-0 and lost to Sox 0-3 @ home. Rays are 6-0 against the Yanks and Sox on the road and 1-5 at home? Go figure... Edit to add that I am just going on memory here.

Pathetic crown out there tonight considering this is the team with the best record in baseball. What the hell is wrong with you people?
