never really listened to this one that much for some reason. listened to a lot of fantastic damage and cancer 4 cure. weird.
Cancer 4 Cure was what caused me to seek this out back before it was even up on YouTube. You could barely find a stream of the album. It was, for all intents and purposes, dead until RTJ hit it big. Now it's a YouTube presence, plus the various streaming services carry it, which they didn't before. Same with
Fantastic Damage, which was also dead until El-P's career and recognition took off.
As far as
I'll Sleep When You're Dead goes, it's an effort that I think is the best and worst of El-P. At his best, El creates soundscapes and raps with flow over them, drawing the listener in to even his silences. At his worst, the staccato nature of the electronic beats and lyrical flow is disorienting and not fun (not that it's meant to be fun, but the desirability of that achievement is another argument for a different day) to listen to. It's a little more uneven that
Cancer 4 Cure, but I've heard through interviews that it's El's favorite album. He had complete creative control and wasn't worried about pleasing anybody.
I'd say the best tracks are:
Tasmanian Pain Coaster
Drive
Habeas Corpses (Draconian Love)
The Overly Dramatic Truth
Poisenville Kids No Wins/Reprise
