FEET - Number One

Coventry England Indie Rock band now based in North London.

This catchy and danceable synth based tune was originally released as a B-Side single from their 3rd album but "It quickly became a fan favourite at live shows" and is now out as a single on its own.

I thought that their run of albums until Sparkle in the Rain, but before the Breakfast Club single was pretty epic. New Gold Dream was a favorite of mine. felt like they turned to **** after the Breakfast Club- and one of the worst live shows I've ever seen (other than having Shriekback open for them, who were incredible). And weirdly, because it's sooo obvious from the song titles and lyrics, it took me years later to put together that they were born-again and/or jesusy with the music. either that, or they played a trick on me.

Wendy - Wild

🎶 Baby I’m running wild
Yeah yeah yeah🎶

Young rockers from Setagaya City, Tokyo 🇯🇵with an absolute banger, channeling 70's and 80's Hard Rock, Roots Rock, Blues Rock.

Been Stellar - Scream from New York, NY

🎶
It's the end of the world
And I feel fine
A moment away
I take my time...

Morning in America
It's morning in America
And I don't know what this started

"Post Punk meets Shoegaze in a stunning combination"

This NY band has been getting rave reviews from people who have seen them live.

I was at that show too (Kaiser Center in Oakland right?). My impressions of the show were similar to yours; I thought the guitar player was particularly weak in spite of (or because of) all his rock star posing.

We saw Shriekback in a small club the following year and have seen Barry Andrews' son Finn perform four times with The Veils and solo.

Same show!!

Yes about the guitarist! Awful!

And funny- Oingo Boingos guitarist had some of the same mannerisms, but pulled it off much much better... Iirc, wore his guitar strap high, and always had an ironic look on his face.

Eta... Mostly I remember the band just looking bored and going through the motions. Plus, they mostly played stuff from that new album, post breakfast club, which was godawful

I guess for better or worse, we didn't forget about them so at least the song was accurate.

I see what you did there.

But yeah- as I wrote above, I still really like that run of albums up until that show. New Gold Dream is a top 10 "80s" album for me.

I was thinking too- thst was a terrible spot for music. Only show I ever saw there- scoustice, stage, lighting... All not very conducive live music.

Gonna blackdot here, as I've been completely out of the loop in terms of new music for the past several years.... honestly, if I'm not listening to SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio, I've been listening to the local country station. I've always liked country and the stuff that's out right now is really good, IMO.

There are very few "new music channels" that are any good right now. KROQ, which has always been the "new music" stalwart in the LA area, seems to just play older stuff, which is fine, but it doesn't do anything for me in the way of hearing about new stuff.

So yeah, gonna browse through this thread to see if I can find some stuff I like.

Along with country, I am a huge fan of ska/reggae, indie rock, Americana, some metal (Tool) and regular ol' rock.

I assume we’ll do a 2024 song draft next month. I’ve been consistently finding new artists to follow from those.

Yeah, people are now starting to put out their "Top Songs of 2024" list and I keep finding more great tunes from earlier in the year that I missed.

There should be a 2024 song draft, but I won't be starting it, as I don't want to be responsible for monitoring it and then putting together a Spotify or YouTube list.

I'll participate if I can narrow it down to 20 or 30 - just made a count and have posted about 135 songs in this thread, to date. :hophead:

I'll start the thread since NV is banned. It won't happen until the gap between the MADs music threads.

In the meantime, here's twelve hours of slightly used music from the mid-year draft.

Just listen to this album from Amyl and the Sniffers over and over to get your head right.

Ride - I Came to See the Wreck

"ICTSTW is a song split into three parts, each one more enthralling than the last"

Really like this album. They're playing the Kilby Block Party in SLC in May---looking forward to seeing them live.

You should have a great time.

Here is a live version of Scream From New York, NY on KEXP from 6 days ago (I wish the vocals had been mixed better).

And here they are doing it live on KEXP:

They are awesome (and quite loud) live

It's good, but I like it less than their earlier stuff... Not sure why it is.

I'm new to them so this is the first album I've experienced all the way through. Have listened to a few older songs as well.

Dovegate - Don't Go Look At Me

Liverpool UK three-piece Indie Rock band with a tune that's a banger. A friend of mine commented: "Really like this. It reminds me of the 80s Eurosynth I like (The Fixx, Simple Minds, Real Life, Depeche Mode, etc...) but with a much stronger edge"

Really strong vocals, with guitars and backing vocals ("Ahaaa) giving it a Power Pop touch.

Leonid & Friends - I Say a Little Prayer

A cover by our favorite Russians of the Burt Bacharach and Hal David composition that was "inspired by Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franlin and H.E.R."

I have included the Spotify version, but it is not as impressive as seeing the live performance on YouTube.

Wyatt Flores - Don’t Wanna Say Goodnight 🤠

Some folks think this 23 year old from Stillwater OK will be a big star in Country Music.

I would label him more Alt Country, Outlaw Country or Country Rock myself.

And here he is with his band performing it on CBS Saturday Sessions a few days ago:

The Moles - Had To Be You (2024)

Cover of a tune originally done by The Bats

Catchy with some interesting guitar work, particularly the use of the flemenco.

I've got 30 albums on my AotY list... and I'm pretty sure that I have a top 10 identified. But this is the hardest year in a while for me to figure out what I like. I'm pretty sure I have a #1 album, but the rest of my top 10 may change based on the direction of the wind.

I'm not even sure I can rank albums 11-30. What an odd year.

I was stoked to find this Cindy Lee album on streaming platforms today.... man,at over 2 hours long, it is a chore to listen to during the work day ;)

I'll have to give it another shot with headphones tonight.

I read that it was uploaded illegally and will be taken down.

I saw that too... hopefully I have it cached now ;)

I have Apple Music and it was never uploaded. I’ve been meaning to listen on YouTube but haven’t yet. Kind of annoying but artists and labels are free to handle things as they want, of course.

It's still on Spotify for me :oldunsure:

Hey! It’s on Apple Music now. Assuming it stays I’ll definitely give it a listen. It was so high on so many best of 2024 lists.

Hozier - Too Sweet (Live SNL)

Great live performance of a song that will make my best of 2024 list.

For those who would like to hear the studio version:

Nulbarich - Lights Out (feat. Jeremy Quartus)

Charmingly offbeat tune from this J-Pop artist, with an odd mishmash of different musical genres, mixing traditional Pop Music with some Jazz, Lounge, Funk and even a dash of Hip Hop thrown in.

S.A.R. - Juice

Deliciously funky.

"The song is as attentive as ice-cold juice"
"It would be fun to sway and clap at a live performance"

I love the new album from former Only Ones lead singer from Peter Perrett - The Cleansing.

Top 5 of '24 for me.

Teddy Swims - Bad Dreams

Good songs from 2024 keep popping up that I seemed to have missed, including this Pop Soul flavored tune.

#6 UK
#8 Ireland
#40 Australia
#53 Canada
#72 US Billboard Hot 100

Luby Sparks - Broken Headphones (2024)

Not sure where to post late 2024 tunes that I discover in early 2025, so I'll put it here. This was released December 19, 2024.

Luby Sparks is a Toyko based Dream Pop band that has elements of Shoegaze and Grunge. They are named after the 2012 American film "Ruby Sparks"
