Taste test ideas (1 Viewer)

Happy almost Thanksgiving all.

For about 12 years now, my family gets together (mom and dad, my brother and his wife and their now 19 and 17 year old daughters, me and my wife and our now 12 and 14 year old dudes) Thanksgiving either in FL, MN, or some random other place.

Same people generally, but every year we do a blind taste test of same foods made by different companies. Well, after that many years we are running low on ideas. I don't remember exactly what we have done, but these are some I remember - potato chips, marinara sauces, fast food french fries, frozen cheese pizzas, peanut butters, orange juices, vanilla ice creams, microwave popcorns, applesauces, colas, sparkling waters, frozen bagels, ritz type crackers, cheddar cheeses, and a few I am forgetting.

It is a fun time. My wife likes to take charge, so she will squirrel away in the kitchen preparing the 5-7 different brands in a single serving cup or in a large bowl (potato chips, marinara, etc) and we will all taste the foods and all rate them. The trick is to have ones that are pretty similar looking (so you can't tell from looks what brand is what), not necessarily tasting anywhere close to one another.

So...anyone got any ideas?

Pesto
Onion rings
So many root beers, so little time. If you do this, make sure to get the expensive small batch brands. Thank me later.
Mayo
Ranch
Hot Sauce
Crackers
Pickles
Yogurt
Ice Cream

Types of milk (cow, oat, almond, etc) - works if you’re guessing which is which

Chocolates

Jerky

Protein bars

Mac and cheese

Everyone is old enough to make stuff (or you can team up) to make different types of cookies - you can make them ahead of time and bring them to the gathering.

OOOO jerky! There is a retail jerky store near us. I wasn't aware of how many varieties there were of jerky until I walked into that store. A veritable paradise of preserved meat!

Store bought mac and cheese, or homemade? Store bought, there are several brands. I'd like to hear the outcome of this one actually.

Home made, you could do a "America's Test Kitchen" kind of thing, and start with the type of pasta that is best, then work thru the types of cheeses and how much, dry mustard vs. bottled mustard vs. no mustard, small diced cubes of ham, tomato, peas, tuna, smoked pork, etc.

Then, when everyone is lulled into a false sense of security, all you have to do is justify the mentioning of the argument of "crunchy topping" vs. "no crunchy topping" and all heck breaks loose!

BBQ Sauce? I think they all kind of look the same.
Syrup? Store brand to real maple small batch. I think they all kind of look the same.
Butter? Store brand to fancy.

The Washington Post does these. I see boxed cornbread, US Coke vs Mexican Coke, ranch dressing, cinnamon, frozen french fries, fast food biscuits, frozen pizza (they did cheese for comparison), and jam.

Have a tasty Thanksgiving,

We did this with pizza once. Got 4 pizzas, each from a different place and blind tasted them all. Now we all know what our unbiased favorite local pizza is.
My family did this too although structured it like a Sweet 16 tournament where two would be matched against each other each week with the winner moving onto the next round.

What did you all select?

We did this back when we first moved here. We did Apizza Scholls, Scotties, Red Sauce, and Ken's. My favorite was Apizza Scholls and it's still up there.

If I had to do it again now, I would add Pan con Queso and Turning Peel.

I have never had Apizza Scholls. Shame on me. No excuse other than laziness.

There's a spot in Beaverton called Hapa Pizza and man, it's awesome. Might be my new favorite. Asian fusion pizza

YouTube channel with two guys that do a variety of interesting tests and games and such. They do a lot of blind taste tests. I mean I know blind taste tests were a thing already lol, but I could see someone asking this question being a fan.

That looks really good. We are in such an amazing pizza city.

You need to get Apizza Scholls immediately. My go to is pepperoni with Mama Lil's.
