I also am not sure I buy it when people (some I know in real life) tell me they only drink beer because they like the taste.

That would be like smoking marijuana without any marijuana in it.

Of course it's not 100%, but it's my opinion almost everyone drinks alcohol for the effect.
The non-alcoholic beer market is a $25 billion dollar industry, how do you explain that?
Yeah, I’m sure people acquire the taste. What I have more trouble believing, is some people claim they liked the taste of booze (and beer, in particular) from the first sip.

I also think there’s a slight societal shift to destigmatize non-drinkers, but mocktails and N.A. beers still alleviate the pressure to drink an “adult” beverage.
Definitely noticed more of this going on lately, particularly at breweries. Was pretty disappointed in the one I went to yesterday to meet some friends that was out of kombucha. Although I guess that technically does have some alcohol in it?

I rarely drink.....like rarely.

Social beers.....a social drink.

We don’t drink at home......ever.

Just never been my thing.

But I do really enjoy good ice cold beers with friends.....but as far as hard liquor......nope. Once in a blue moon.

If a doctor asked me what is my alcohol intake I would say maybe the equivalent of a 18 pack of beer in year.

Maybe a glass of wine 3-4 times a year.

No hard alcohol.
This is basically me since forever.

Even back when I drank socially often (my 20s and some of my 30s), I never drank at home. And that is probably why I almost never drink now. I don't drink at home, and because I drink so little and so infrequently, my tolerance is really low, so more than a couple would give me a strong buzz, and I refuse to do that and drive under those circumstances, so I just don't do it. A cold beer or two always tastes good on a warm summer night when a buddy and I go to a restaurant for outdoor seating to shoot the breeze for a few hours, and I will still enjoy the occasional white russian (which is always very Dude), but that is pretty much my limit now.

I don't believe anyone drinks black coffee because they like the taste.

Weird, some people have different likes/tastes. I guess black coffee is an acquired taste.

It’s kinda odd so many adult drinks are acquired tastes.

Why has society decided sweet beverages, like chocolate milk and fruit juice, are predominantly for kids?

I LOVE chocolate milk. And grape juice, apple juice. Just not about getting all the sugar from those so I usually avoid them.

I used to put enough sugar and cream in my coffee to make it a straight up dessert drink. But the sugar just isn’t that great for me. So I stopped cold turkey. I figured out how much sugar I wasn’t ingesting after a few years and it was in the pounds. It’s been 10+ years now.

Fair enough. I may need to give black coffee another chance.

I know it’s not an either/or, but calories from alcohol aren’t exactly healthy, either.

For sure. I’ve often put forth the question, what’s worse for you, one coke or a beer. I think the coke is worse for you. Talking about 1. Not 9 beers.

Cold brew black coffee ftw.

This is my setup.

Drips overnight and makes the smoooothest black coffee ever. The next morning I add a little water to it, stir up the grounds a bit and just let it sit a few more minutes. :chefkiss:

I’m in my 50s. Drank a fair amount in college, on weekends in my 20s and 30s. Less so in my 40s. Married with teenagers. Honestly, drinking, other than here and there (2-3 at a neighborhood BBQ, and not having to drive or on vacation) is mostly an afterthought. It’s not something I enjoy like I used to, my life just is different now. Loved my times hanging out with buddies and other couples when I first got married, when we’d have a few, but really don’t miss it at all.

Ironically, as we are on a FF message board, the one weekend a year I drink more than usual and on back to back days, is when my 30 year old league gathers for an in person auction. Other than that, it’s few and far between. My wife doesn’t drink much either, and I have no interest in drinking alone. Long story short, my consumption has evolved with my life stage, and while I have zero regrets about more partying in my earlier days, I really don’t miss it.

I've been all over the spectrum. I went many years of no drinking.

Then some drinking.

Then some time when I was drinking 2 drinks a day.

I'm one of those people that processes alcohol seemingly well. I never ever wake up feeling groggy or even remotely hung over.

6 months ago, I would have said I can have two drinks in the evening and I wake up feeling exactly the same as if I'd nothing to drink.

And then I bought an Oura ring. https://ouraring.com/. I was honestly surprised at how much better my sleep and readiness stats are the morning after no drinks.

My resting heartrate is almost always 3-5 beats higher on a night after having had 2 drinks. And my REM and Deep Sleep are always significantly better on days when I don't have a drink. And I would have said I sleep fine on nights after a drink.

Really interesting.
I had the same experience. Bought a Garmin watch for Christmas and can now show you in my sleep history on the app the days I drink. The sleep score is usually around 50 vs 80-90 on a regular day. Not sure if the actual number means anything. But it seems consistent with how I feel the next day just quantified.

Convinced me to cut back on drinking. Although when I have a non-alcoholic beer, I feel the back of my brain not believing the label and monitoring for the alcohol to kick in. I still feel a little uncomfortable getting behind the wheel. I guess that is a testament to the taste and experience of those beers.

I hadn't had a drink since December. I drank during the draft and I probably showed my butt in the shark pool. I said some crazy things and I'll just let it die down before posting again over there. But, still never been banned.:pickle::pickle::pickle:

cut down a decent amount since I saw this thread - was doing a few bourbons every night but now down to around 3 days per week which is still a lot but progress. i usually take an edible or a toke or 2 on the off nights but hey im not perfect! also much easier to lose weight drinking less.

thx for this thread to at least get me to take a look at things....

Just got my Oura ring! Thanks Joe!

My plan is to get as drunk as hell over the next week to set a baseline, then go on the wagon and watch my numbers improve.

Down to 3-4 pints per week. Only 1 can left in my fridge and it's been there a while so I gotta drink it soon.

respectfully what drives our apparent collective need to be altered it is fascinating to me take that to the bank brohans

I'd say stress (financial, work, relationship, etc.) and then there's also peer pressure. You'll note that many in here, including me, mention drinking as a way to wind down. It's just a heck of a lot easier to do that then to spend 20 minutes meditating or 30 minutes exercising to potentially get a similar effect.
i totally understand that we drink to relieve stress and to make social situations easier and other reasons but my question is why the damage we are doing to our bodies is undeniable and we just as a society cant seem to say no and in fact its glorified no one glorifies any other sort of consumption that is so obviously bad for us its a funny thing to me take that to the bank brohans

Not to side track but I worry what my stress levels are doing to my health almost as much as alcohol. Stress is so hard to quantify and many people are loaded with it and it’s killing them.

And to be clear I’m not suggesting folks should take up alcohol or it’s a healthy response - there’s better ways to mange it. But it is an “easy” option. Also, assuming it does reduce stress I could see it being beneficial to someone although still not the healthiest option.

Bumping the thread. I'm trying to focus on doing more meditation, exercise and talk therapy to help with my stress and I think it's been working - specifically in the realm of using drinking to help destress. Which means I've lowered my weekly number but one of the issues I have is I genuinely enjoy beer, cocktails and whiskey. Especially, as we are moving in to Fall and the holiday season there's a lot of seasonal drinks I want to imbibe.

Some interesting reads in this thread. I voted 7-13, as I usually have a glass of wine each night with dinner. Sometimes as little more on the weekend. Drank a lot in college, mostly beer and had my fair share of pot. Had bad experiences with both wine ( boones farm strawberry Hill and pepperoni pizza didn't mix well) and whiskey (shots of segrams seven). I found out after getting married that getting wasted on the weekends and marriage just didn't work well together. Besides, both my father and his father were alcoholics. Gave up drinking for years then would have an occasional drink when out with friends. My wife and I decided to try wine. There are so many good wineries in Virginia and we started to develop a palate for wine pairing with food. Still, we were mostly drinking on weekends. After we both retired, wine with food just became a regular thing. Now we enjoy wine with dinner most nights but nothing to excess. We even went to a wine festival last year and after two hours of tastings, my wife said we needed to go home. On trips to Mexico over the last 10+ years we have started to enjoy Bailey's Irish cream in our coffee and tequila on occasion. It must be good tequila and it should take as long to drink one shot as it would one typical mixed drink. Pot and edibles are not legal on South Carolina so we had never really tried those. One thing I have noticed is that red wine helps me sleep better and longer. My wife has considered CBD products to help her with sleep but as of yet has not tried them.

I had a positive conversation with a coworker over the weekend who has been struggling with alcohol. He's mentioned his drinking a couple times and has shown up to work looking rough several times over the past couple months.

I had my own issues years back and think that helped me recognize what I was seeing. I understand the cycle, the addiction that is hard to admit, and know the person can only improve their situation when they are ready.

I hope things change for the guy and I've offered up some activities to get him away from the alcohol. Coming to the gym with me, coming over to watch sports or go shooting. He's a single guy, no kids and his parents are on the decline. It's hitting him that he hasn't taken the next step in life he thought he would and that's his biggest challenge/regret.

This is the time of year to really watch out for people. Lack of sunlight, holidays, cold weather is a recipe for depression. I wanted to post this for awareness. Not everyone needs or wants help, but often signs are there and sometimes it's as simple as starting the conversation.

One year after the start of this thread and I'd say we've cut our drinking in half since. We have nothing from Monday to Wednesday and only have a drink on Thursday if we go out to eat. The weekends are much less than it was, partially because it hits us more now. It's gonna be tough when the weather warms up since we love sitting on the balcony with a bottle of wine or a couple of beers and we inevitably walk past a brewery on our walks where we used to stop in for a beer or two. We still could cut back a little on weekends but I'm happy with where we're at right now. Neither of us really want to cut back but know we should since we're not getting any younger. Why does wine have to taste so good!

Started January with no drinking M-Th, done pretty well with that aside from a few dinners that called for wine and we finished the bottle, or a lunch or two where they have a lunch special

That alone probably reduced my weekly consumption by 10 drinks or more (probably more my bourbon pours are pretty heavy)

Will be tough to stick with in the warmer weather though

I basically did a Dry January without really planning for it. I was on some medication that prohibited me from drinking. Got back into the flow this past Saturday night, though.

I'll say, my daughter's volleyball schedule has really put a damper on my weekday "home happy hours". Probably for the best, actually.

Got poker night this Friday night and will likely have a few then, and I've enjoyed spending time watching college hoops at home while having a few cocktails on Saturday afternoons... will probably do that again. But will skip the weekday drinks... really no point.

Doing almost the exact same thing here. Maybe one drink only spread between Monday and Wednesday/Thursday. Really making a conscious effort to not have that last drink or "just one more drink" late on Friday or Saturday night after having had a few already along with some maryjane. We've been keeping lot's of seltzer, juices and fruits to make mocktails instead. I've found that using the maryjane along with sipping a mocktail seems to work as a good substitute instead of having that last drink.

That won't be legal here in Idaho anytime soon but I'm ok with it. It's been about 7 or 8 years since I smoked and I'm probably better off not having any.

I cut out all alcohol on Sunday 1/26..

No particular reason and it wasn't planned.. We had a guys weekend at my buddy's cabin that Friday/Saturday and I drank quite a bit. Felt like crap on Sunday and Monday and beer just hasn't sounded good. So I figured I wouldn't drink until it did. I'm also trying to lose 15lbs so I figured cutting out beer would help that. It's been 11 days now and I really haven't missed it yet. Now I know myself well enough to know it's not like I'm never drinking again. We live on a lake and pontoon boat rides and golf league are just better with beer. But I'm enjoying this brief sobriety period right now.

Saturday...after tennis I usually down a few beers with the guys after we're done playing about 2 hours. Sometimes it can lead to more drinking when I get home
Mrs and I have turntables and a DJ booth now built out in our living room and I can't stop her from buying 90s and early 00s vinyl, EDM mainly
All that DJ/spinning of records for hours, you start to open more beers and pour some cocktails for the two of us. We have our own dance party/rave at home

Starts at 10am or earlier depending on when I wrap up from tennis
I would say that Saturday is easily a 4 to 6-pack of tall boys in beer and perhaps 1-2 hard cocktails, typically just straight pours of whiskey or bourbon in the late afternoon/early evening

We haven't even gotten to a typical Sunday during NFL season
-I am fully aware that I am a drinker, it exploded during the pandemic and I'm not making excuses but I have ongoing PTSD, I talked to my doctor and that's what I was told

M-F is all over the place but typically I have at least 1 large beer with lunch, sometimes 2 and these are 22 oz draft pours. They go so well with that fish and salad
I prefer day drinking and don't like drinking at night very often, I usually smoke buds in the evening and also when I first wake up w/cup of coffee, breakfast!

The salty bars and dark pubs I frequent for lunch time are filled with day drinkers that are there when I arrive and typically there when I leave an hour later
I wouldn't post this except I am going to be a grandfather in July and don't want this issue to come between me and my future grand baby
It would appear I have a lot of work to do between now and then

The biggest change in my drinking since moving out to Portland is that I'm now drinking 16oz beers like I used to drink 12oz ones. There are still lots of beer in six packs..the regular stuff. But all the small batch stuff I like pretty much only comes in 4 packs of 16oz cans.

Our biggest problem is opening another bottle of wine "just for a glass" and it doesn't usually work out that way. Occasionally one of us will put our foot down but not often.

Sounds like I'm going on the wrong direction compared to everyone else. Started playing in a pool league again now that my kid is old enough to stay alone. My drinking has gone up from a "few drinks a month" to maybe a dozen a month or so. Will probably be more during the spring/summer/fall as we put in a new firepit and like to sit out once or twice a week and have a few.

Been 3+ years without any booze and honestly don't miss it. I never could really get "buzzed" off the stuff no matter how many tequila shots I put back so always felt like a waste of money, time and health. Definitely miss having a few at social gatherings but you eventually get over that and start to enjoy a good sparkling mineral water with lime. I think the only time I'll drink in the future is a toast to a significant achievement and it has to be Krug, Dom or Spades 🍾

The "just one more drink" on Friday/Saturday night can get me as well. Usually when listening to music. I'm better off just going to bed.
Our biggest problem is opening another bottle of wine "just for a glass" and it doesn't usually work out that way. Occasionally one of us will put our foot down but not often.

We need to party

I've basically switched my beer drinking to nearly 100% NA beer at this point. Mostly the Athletic Brewery, I signed up for their online club, and order it online. They are constantly coming out with new brews and if you gave me a blind test, there's no way I could tell it wasn't regular full-alchohol beer. A complete no brainer. And it's not even really any more expensive than craft beers in a grocery stores these days ($10.99 per 6-pack).

BUT

I cannot for the life of me find a substitute for a nice glass of bourbon or sipping tequila. I've tried a few of the non-alchoholic varities and they taste NOTHING like the real thing. Like if you gave it to me blind and asked me what taste it was trying to simulate, bourbon wouldn't even be in my top 100 guesses. It tastes nothing like it and it's criminal they can even claim that's what they're trying to simulate.

I realize the intent is really only to substitute for bourbon/tequila in mixed cocktails, not to sip straight.

Has anyone found anything out there that can do the deed of a nice glass of bourbon or tequila on the rocks (one cube) at night after a long hard day when the kids are finally in bed? I don't need the alchohol, I just like the taste/bite to wind down with.

I've been - at the doctor's orders - off booze for the past 6 weeks or so. Athletic makes some great NA beers. Definitely the best I've had.

I do miss getting a "buzz" off the stuff, though.

That said, I had a few NA brews last night and a couple the night before while at a conference and I swear just being in a social situation with others drinking gave me a little bit of a buzz. Maybe my mind just got tricked a little bit.
