RUDI’S CRAZY DAY IN DETROIT

Posted by Mike Florio on September 2, 2008, 9:17 p.m. EDT

A strange thing happened to running back Rudi Johnson when he visited with the Detroit Lions on Monday.

Someone stole his stuff.

Seriously.

Specifically, and as we’re told by a reliable source (i.e., not the person who told Mort that Joey Harrington had agreed to terms with the Ravens on Monday, or the person who told John Clayton that Todd Bouman had agreed to terms with the Ravens on Tuesday), Johnson left his bags outside CEO Matt Millen’s office while he met with team officials and, ultimately, worked out a deal with the team.

So when Johnson came back to get his bags, they were nowhere to be found. Johnson and Millen were stumped.

Enter the eye in the sky.

The team checked the videotapes generated by the team’s in-house surveillance system, and they quickly identified the culprit.

So who might it have been? None other than Tatum Bell, who lost his gig with the Lions after Rudi arrived.

Per the source, Bell took the bags to the house of a female acquaintance. When confronted on the matter, Bell offered up some cockamamie story that he thought the bags belonged to someone he knew. The girl, however, said that she hadn’t seen Bell in several months and he showed up out of the blue and asked her to keep the bags for a while.

Johnson has retrieved the bags, and it’s our understanding that charges won’t be pressed.

Tatum apparently didn’t know that he was being monitored.

Fortunately, the displaced running back wasn’t Najeh Davenport.

Unbeleiveable if this is true...

According to ProFootballTalk.com, Tatum Bell made off with Rudi Johnson's bags Monday while Rudi was in Matt Millen's office.

Seriously. Upon finding the items missing, the Lions checked video surveillance and found Bell doing his best cookie crook impression. Bell took the bags to a female acquaintance and asked her to keep them for awhile. Johnson has since retrieved the bags and charges will not be pressed. No word yet on whether Bell fumbled the leather items as he made his way down the crowded hallway.

No doubt...

Didn't this happen a few years ago with an NFL team, someone stole money from another player. I'm totally blanking on the team and the player, but I recall he was not a high character guy and it was basically his last straw with the NFL. Someone help me out ...

Believe that was Albert Connell (sp?) in New Orleans

I heard he was tackled by the receptionist.

What the story didn't say is the Lions installed that multimillion dollar video surveillance as an early warning system in case that crazy dude Martz ever tried to re-enter the building.

But, hey, at least they found Rudi's luggage so chalk that up as another in a long line of sage investments by one Matt Millen...

Holy ####. I mean....just wow. THat is almost unbelievable, except for the fact that Bell has proven to be dumb as a bag of rocks and a total whackjob.

welcome to unemployment Tater...best be getting used to it.

This is awesome, what a great offseason of stories this year. The Favre saga, Ocho Cinco, Javons Wild Ride (glad he's ok), Leinhart happy hour, Tatum Capone.

I'm pretty sure Tatum has some serious mental issues. My guess is he will be incarcerated or committed within the next 12 months

Lame jokes aside, this is pathetic. How do you go from being a starting running back in the NFL...to a thief while still on the team? Just taking some bags and walking off? What a dirtbag.

He seriously cost himself a job in the NFL. I could see a team picking him up after week 1 for some depth at the position. Even at the league minimum, those are some nice paychecks. Really, how stupid can you be?

Perhaps he was always a thief.Stole some paychecks IMO

I wonder if he did it for financial reasons, or because he didn't like him coming in at the same position. Maybe he was going to attempt to bully him, and make it as uncomfortable for him as possible.

I wonder if the Lions intended to cut him regardless of this incident, or whether this was the final straw. Expensive mistake if it's the latter. What a dolt.

seriously - If Tatum can't make the team in D-Town where the cabinet is bare for RB talent - he is finished! There are better back on the scrap heap like Alexander and Benson.
