not disagreeing, but kind of shows that it seems Cowboys have 3 2nd string TEs. maybe they can get something from Rico if they use him right, but it still doesn't change the fact that they have 3 2nd string guys. Maybe 3rd. 

It would have been interesting if the Eagles hadn't moved ahead and drafted Goedhart if the Cowboys would have grabbed him. It seems most Cowboy's fans feel they never had any interest in him, but if i were to guess Goedhart gets more production the first 4 weeks of the season then any of the Cowboys' TEs all year. Now maybe their strength can come from utilizing 2 slot guys with Beasley and Tavon, guess we will all see.

I agree - I think that the fact that they kept Rico, even after publicly taking him down pretty much all offseason (not to mention the arrest) means that they know that they aren't getting much out of Swaim, Jarwin and Schultz and they just have a bunch of 2/3 tier guys. Rico making the cut actually made me less interested in Jarwin as a sleeper (not that I was super interested before).

 
Obviously, Rico was never in danger of being cut. He's simply got too much potential. I've been critical of The Clapper, but he's not that dumb.

I said earlier Garrett might have a plan for Rico. That said, it doesn't change the fact he's been mishandled. Rico should've had PT with the 1s in preseason games to better gauge what they have.

There very well may come a time to cut him, but his rare athletic ability-to-size ratio warrants exploring to the fullest.

Rico remains a near-perfect deep stash in dynasty leagues.

You keep the dream alive. Jerry still owns the team and of course has all the power he wants but everyone in the building knows Stephen is running the day to day. 

Theres a reason the oline and dline are the strength of our team, we didn’t sign S. Watkins, cut Dez, Bailey, they have 19.5 million free this year and more than 70 million next year.

You really think Jerruh is responsible for all that?

Yep. I think it started happening when Stephen talked Jerry out of taking Manziel for Zach Martin.

At this point, Stephen is no doubt the acting boss. No way Jerry cuts Dez. That was a big clue.

Jerry is a great owner, but Stephen has a better eye for running things & is much more of a hardass than Jerry. Really happy with Stephen.

We simply have a great front office with the Jones family & personnel guru Will McClay. We’re starting to outdraft everyone & that’s obviously a huge advantage. 

The last thorn is Garrett. He no longer will get the benefit of the doubt. The Clapper is gone if we don’t go deep in the playoffs.

 
The thing that would concern me about Rico is not that he smokes marijuana, but that he is stupid enough to get caught with it the day before he finds out whether he makes an NFL roster. He either has a serious addiction, or he is just not that intelligent.

Now we get to see if all that potential translates to something good on the field.

 
When your best WR is Cole Beasley and you have one of the least threatening passing attacks in the NFL....I don't know.l....maybe activate this guy, thrown him out there and see what happens? Couldn't be any worse than what's out there.

Rico being inactive this week might’ve had more to do with him getting caught with weed than anything else. Garrett said right after it happened there would be consequences so it likely had something to do with it.

Either way, The Clapper’s hand will be forced soon enough if a receiver doesn’t step up. I’ve contended all along we should know more about what Rico can do, but Garrett is too worried about his blocking, LOL.

My guess is Rico starts getting some PT & maybe even some packages drawed up for him. If not next week, very soon. He’s simply got too much upside to keep buried.

This is pretty true so far. Although the one dynasty league I own him in, 9 starters (no K or D) and 14 teams with decent sized rosters, I got him for free after he was cut week 2...after his first NFL game where he had a Redzone target.

Classic stock market "Buy the rumor, sell the news" syndrome.

He was a hot commodity when there was nothing to be excited about, and now that he has his chance he/s yesterday's news and no one cares.

Seems like it. I just want to flip after a TD or two. If it was TE premium I'd probably hold until the bitter end unless the right value came along assuming he ever produces anything.

Disagree.  Michael got several chances to show what he can do but hasn't ever shown much.  Because Gathers is a poor blocker on a team that needs their TE to block, he hasn't yet.  Its frustrating to anyone who believes his talent can serve in a useful role as a pass catching TE that the Cowboys kept him... He'd be a better fit on an offense that doesn't ask the TE to block as much or can utilize him strictly as a pass catcher.  I think he was someone the Cowboys didn't want to release and watch him catch on somewhere else, but they don't have a way to use him in their offense.

He may never get the chance.  But I do believe he can be useful in passing situations.  He won't be interesting again until he's on a diferent roster or the Cowboys change how theybuse their TEs or him.

Pretty much exactly what I and others were saying before the season. He could have an impact on an offense with a coaching staff that would choose to utilize what he CAN do while limiting his exposure to stuff he can't. The Cowboys just can't or won't do that, and I wish they'd have just let him go if they don't plan to try. Other more imaginative offenses could.

Especially when they have no one else in their passing game who's capable of creating a mismatch, anywhere.

 
Gathers finished the regular season with three catches on seven targets for 45 yards. Analysis: While he suited up for 15 games -- the first regular-season action of his NFL career -- Gathers never played more than 18 snaps on offense, and six of his seven targets came before the Cowboys' Week 8 bye. He's still got the size and athleticism to potentially make an impact if everything comes together for him, but the former college basketball player remains a long shot to ever provide fantasy value.

Maybe a new OC will help get him involved, but he's probably nothing. Still worth holding in the offseason. My leagues go to unlimited rosters in the offseason so even more so. 

 
Traded for Kittle the end of last season, picked up C.Herndon mid-season, and already had Jonnu on my roster.

With a roster crunch looming, I think this is the end of the line for my man Rico.

 
I actually just dropped him in both my dynasty leagues finally.  

So of course I clicked on this thread thinking it was going to talk about how he’s a starter now. 

 
NFL suspended TE Rico Gathers one game for violating the the league’s substance-abuse policy.

Gathers was arrested for marijuana possession last September. This could actually help his roster chances, as the Cowboys won't have to make a decision on him until Week 2. Even if Gathers keeps his spot, he's likely going to be returning behind Jason Witten, Blake Jarwin, and Dalton Schultz.
