TE Top Tier - Is it really that simple? (1 Viewer)

The more I crunch the numbers, the more uncertainty I'm seeing in the top tier TE's this year. Historically, guys like Gates have dominated and everyone else as followed in tier 2. Coming into this season, we have seen some pretty consistent ratings of two TE hitting the top tier (Graham/Gronk). Here is my beef, Graham belongs there and I think he is going to be far and away the top TE this year but Gronk is an anomaly to me. Does he really belong in that top tier? With so many targets, weak Oline playing in the preseason, and a general lack of explosiveness from NE, how much of a guarantee is it that he will be there at the end of the year? He may finish #2, but I think he comes in pretty far behind Graham.

Thoughts?

90% of expert ratings consists of nothing but erasing the number "2011" and replacing it with "2012."

I agree with you. Gronk will almost always go in the 2nd and I don't think he's worth it this year. I'd rather have Gates/Hernandez in the 4th or 5th.

Will Gronk have 17 touchdowns this year? Not likely at allWill he still have a lot of yards and a lot of receptions? AbsolutelyMore importantly will he outscore the TE in the next tier? Most likely - Graham and Gronk are very strong bets to be 1/2 in the position although I would certainly choose Graham over Gronkowski.Hernandez or Gates a few rounds later are excellent options and perhaps better values but I don' think either will score more FF points this year (assuming health for all four)

Gronk had 10 TDs as a rookie, and 17 last year. While I wouldn't bet he'd match 17 this year, I see 10 as his floor in this offense. I'd still rank Graham ahead of him though.

I forgot where I heard it, but if you took away all 17 TD's Gronk scored last season, he still finished as the #2 TE overall in ppr leagues.I doubt you can go wrong with either.

Personally, I believe Graham should be in his own tier. He has the potential to produce like a #1WR in the TE slot. Gronk gets lumped in there because of the year he had in 2011 but I have a feeling he is going to disappoint a lot of people this year. I'm not touching him at his ADP. If you have to take an elite TE I think you'd be much better served grabbing Gates or Hernandez in the 5th. There's simply too much talent at other positions to be taking Gronk in the 2nd/3rd round.
