TE Travis Kelce, KC (1 Viewer)

and then?

are they really going to release him if he makes no decision?

can they get back the roster bonus if he retires after March 15?
I’m personally not interested in hypotheticals like this since the relationship between Kelce and Chiefs is so great.

I expect them to come to a friendly agreement by that date. Kelce’s not dumb. He knows how these critical dates work in the NFL and in his contract, and I don’t think he’d want to “screw over” his team to take a bit more time and then change his mind.

2 cents.

the relationship between Kelce and Chiefs is so great
but is it?

If i was the owner/GM, I would not put a deadline on players who mean so much to the franchise.

If KC really did this, then there is already an issue

to be clear, I think it's more likely the "journalist" abused the "info" provided by his "source" to create clicks, then KC actually doing this to a key player. But if it is true, then it is a problem. And yes, I despise "journalists" as the profession is way less professional than it used to be.

I think it's fair to say that he was distracted and may have took his eye off of the prize. Well maybe that prize now has a little more curves and guiles.

Get out of here with this.

The Chiefs and Kelce have always had a great relationship. This whole thing is both sides respecting the other. Meaning:

Chiefs: we don’t care either way what you do but if you decide to retire let us know soon and here is why.

Kelce: Sure thing Big Red.

Andy Reid is a second father to him. This is about mutual reapect.

Yeah, some mountains are being built from mole hills.

I always push my father and get in his face…

This is business on the Chiefs side. Whether or not they’re best buds, it’s in KC’s best interest to know sooner rather than later if he’s coming back and I see nothing wrong with that.

Didn't someone say he has a month? I'm not sure when he has to let them know, but I'm sure everyone is on the same page and there is some wiggle room here. I'm not sure why some are even arguing about this. This seems silly to me.

Agreed. Both sides know that the decision date isn’t arbitrary. It’s a date when ALL NFL business like this is done due to incentives coming due for the new league year. Non-issue and will be resolved with zero drama imo. And this is from a Raiders fan who wouldn’t mind some Chiefs drama.

I know he has meant a lot to the franchise, but the guy is old. hes already the 2nd oldest TE to produce at his level and hes clearly in decline.

personally if I were the chiefs I'd draft his replacement and let him learn behind Kelce. if Kelce retires you need that replacement sooner than expected. but they should not be going into next year without having drafted a good talent at the position.

The chiefs can probably limp through one more year with Kelce but after that I dont think there is any justification to keep him on the roster beyond that. Personally I think he should retire but if the chiefs can work some sort of mentorship thing with Kelce and the guy being groomed to take his job for one more season, that might be ideal.

How’s Noah Gray as a replacement?
Here are a couple of posts I made up stream in this thread that relate to your question.

"The Chiefs have already started moving away from focusing on the TE position and I believe that will continue, whether they make additional signings at WR or not. I think Gray would be no better than a TE2 for fantasy, even with Kelce gone. I doubt he is ever top 12. Useable in a pinch? Sure, but not someone I'm trading for once Kelce announces his retirement. There will be a short-term spike in his value because it's the Chiefs, but IMO that will be just that, short term spike. He was mediocre to useless when Kelce was injured earlier and I'm not even holding that against him.".

"Let me rephrase that for you. Gray isn't a good Kelce. I think that ship has sailed. Kelce looks extremely slow. Yes, he knows how to run a good route, but his days as a fantasy asset is surely slipping away, if it hasn't already. I actually think Gray is better than the current Kelce, but people expecting high volume like Kelce of yesteryear, is fooling themselves. I'd much rather throw a dart on someone like Brenton Strange than Noah Gray. Also, anyone that thinks Jared Wiley is an answer are also fooling themselves. It would have been tough enough for him to be releveant in 2025 without tearing up his knee (ACL)."

Man, I feel like I watched a different guy that some of the people in here. Kelce is clearly not at his peak anymore, but people are shoveling dirt on a guy who is still one of the better TEs in the NFL.

I find that happening a lot lately. As soon as a guy drops off a little bit, suddenly "he should retire" and I don't know, it seems silly to me. Like there is absolutely room for a player to hang around and still be a quality starter (and people are 100% wrong if they think Kelce wasn't still a good TE in 2024) even if they used to be better. Is it a social media, hostage of the moment thing? Is it the Belichick "better to be a year early than a year late" thing?

Kelce was 12th in the NFL in catches, and likely would have been 6th if he hadn't rested week 18. He still clearly gets open and is a dependable option for Mahomes. The idea that he's washed is ludicrous to me.

I think Kelce will be fine as long as he’s willing to train this summer like he always has before he got with Taylor. This past summer he was way too busy making movies, doing his pod, traveling the world with Taylor, and other activities away from football .. Not saying he wasn’t training still but it still takes a toll on your body and we saw the results this year. I’m confident he can return to form with a full offseason with nothing but football. It’s up to him though if he wants to do that .. That’s what I think he’s mulling rn .. That and going out like trash in his last game .. He’s a team first guy so I know he feels like **** that he let his team down in the bowl.

He's 35, going to be 36 in October. He had a sub par regular season ( yes, he came on later in the season) but his Super Bowl performance was close to brutal. Missed block assignments, giving up on routes and just standing there with his hands in the air when Mahomes was running for his life, really really bad look in SB59. He looked super sluggish, couldn't separate and just washed.

If he returns I see a TE 15-20 season. There are several, 3-4 really good rookies coming out and Bowers, McBride, Hockenson, Laporta, Andrews, Kittle, Kincaid, Pitts, Goedert, Kraft, Njoku, Baby Gronk?., He might contend with I.Likely.

He's done.

You can see it in his eyes when he's on the field. I literally have watched every snap of his career.

Sure, he may try to come back one more year, but I think it would be a massive mistake. He's done.

You know the Chiefs and Kelce better than most, so I will defer to your opinion on them. The one thing I've seen with players in the past who don't accept they are done, is someone like Jason Witten. All he did was taike snaps from more capable TEs when he should have hung it up at least two years before he did. You have to understand a few of these guys are probably not comfortble with thinking about life after football. Plus, ego plays into this as well. I personally welcome my retirement comiing this spring :)

Agreed. He has nothing else to prove and he's almost 36 which is ancient in football terms. He's a HOF'er, won multiple SB's, probably now makes more money off the field than on it and is dating (soon to be married??) the highest profile woman on the planet. I'm sure it won't be an easy decision but it's the correct one. An amazing ride.

Agreed. I suspect he is bummed about his last game possibly being a Super Bowl where the Chiefs got it handed to them, but no one will remember that. His career speaks for itself.

And consider that he is younger than Gronk, who has been retired for over three years now!! Given what a big bodied TE he is, him lasting this long is quite impressive.

Are we gonna get an entire offseason of “will he / won’t he” aka ARod, then see him come back mediocre AF again?

Yes, yes we will.
I kinda think its more likely we get a pretty quick yes, and then a recommitment to having a bounce back season. As many said all year, Kelce was a little, let's say flabby, in 2024, by his standards. I could see him getting in excellent shape after being humbled losing in the Super Bowl. Not saying he'll be peak Kelce obviously, but better than 2024 feels doable.

That train has sailed. As soon as “best shape of his life” SZN is here, people gonna reach for him in the 2nd/3rd. It will prove to be a losing strategy for any who dare.

From the horses mouth-

Sources told Pat McAfee that Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is "coming back for sure" in 2025 after briefly contemplating retirement following the 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. "I'm gonna get in the best shape of my life this offseason. I've got a real bad taste in my mouth with how I played in that last game and I can't go out like that!!!!" Kelce also said via sources. We haven't exactly heard it from Kelce's mouth directly, but it's a pretty good indication that the 35-year-old four-time All-Pro and 10-time Pro Bowler will be returning in 2025. By Kelce's standards, 2024 was a down year with a 97-823-3 line in 16 regular-season games. His 823 receiving yards were his fewest since his rookie year in 2013, when he played in just one game, and his three TDs were also his fewest since 2013. Kelce will still be important in KC's offense if he returns, but his days of being an elite, high-end TE1 in fantasy could be over.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

His girlfriend probably told him if he retires she would break up with him. He must play into his 50s. I got this from a trusted source.

aaaaaaaaand here we go!

Kelce Hype SZN (KHS) has begun! Who’s taking him in the early 4th?

mid-3rd?

(Gasp) somewhere in the second?
:oldunsure:

Discount or bargain for those 3 ADPs plant your flag go!

In January, before retirement concerns really took root, in the FFPC NTE BB tournament(which is one start QB and TEP for those that may not know) he was going in round 7.8 as TE9.

I don't expect that to go up much, if at all, and that's about where he'd need to fall for me to even consider drafting him but my guess is I'll do 40 something more drafts between now and the season and not draft him once.

At least I don’t need to keep also keep Gray now in FFPC ( keep only 14 skill position).
But might draft Gray in the rookie/free agent draft with a late pick.

I hear Gronk is available.
If Gronk does come back, he will most definitely go to a contender. I could see this happening, although the Chiefs will probably only allow it if he starts dating a pop star. Competing screen shots during the game of Swift and Sabrina Carpenter is exactly what NFL fans would want.

Adam Best
Rashee Rice’s success rate vs. zone last season was 89.8%, a 99th % outcome. The 5th best mark EVER in the @RecepPerception database behind 3 Antonio Brown seasons and a Cooper Kupp year. Small sample size, but his zone-beating ability is obviously elite.

Adam Koffler
Rashee Rice operates in the area of the field where Travis Kelce made his money

That’s why Kelce is a major fade this season after what we saw from him in three games alongside Rice last season

In those games, he averaged just 2.7 catches and 23 yards on four targets per game

"You're going to see [Travis Kelce] locked in because he doesn't want people talking about him like they talked about him at the end of last year."

@LRiddickESPN breaks down how last season’s lows will fuel Travis Kelce’s drive for a successful year 🔥

This implies Kelce wasn't "locked in" last year. I'll believe that him recommitting to being "locked in" will restore him to his former fantasy status when I see it. I'll be seeing it on other fantasy owners' rosters.

I mean, he was TE4 in overall points in 1.5 TE PPR last year. At least with FFPC scoring. I'll take that deal right now if I could get it.

Curious where people would slot him into the rookie class in terms of value.

To put it another way, what sort of rookie pick would you give up for Kelce?

I'm trying to gauge relative value of him here vs. the current rookie class since we've seen so little of him actually play in the NFL.
I wouldn’t give more than a 3rd for him. I just saw where some yahoo gave a 1st and 2 nd.
