Lots of talk about how Peyton Manning didn't get the care he needed because of the lockout.

I don't really get that though. Are we saying the Colts have the market cornered for excellent medical help?

And that a new non NFL doctor couldn't talk to Manning's NFL doctors? And how does that even work with "team doctors"? Aren't most of them also in private practice?

And further, if it were that big a deal, why would't the Colts fire them during the lockout so they could attend to Manning?

Any of you guys know how this works exactly or have thoughts on it?

I've gone back and read some of the articles during the lockout and Manning does express concernt that he doesn't have "his guys" attending to him. Although I'm not sure what his rehab involves. From what I understand this neck procedure was a low-risk surgery and was more about alleviating some annoying pains.

If it was a big deal to get Peyton the attention he deserved than I am sure the Colts would have found a way to get it to him. Complications are arising and redflags are being raised - the whole situation is a mess at this point.

I have a feeling that Peyton is losing strength in some manner and its causing him great concern. I am also guessing that he is not seeing a return to strength in his grip either. It may be true that the nerves just have to regenerate but I am not sure if there is anything the doctors can do to help speed up the process.

Because the Colts didn't have you on salary to think of it? In hindsight, that is a great question.

I thought it was more about not being able to rehab at the facility with his guys moreso than the actual doctors.

Because the Colts didn't have you on salary to think of it? In hindsight, that is a great question.

I'm sure they're a lot smarter than I am, wadsworth. It just seems like a really odd situation that doesn't fully add up.J

I'm with you Joe. Seems to me like anytime there's a severe injury, the players consult non-team docs anyway (e.g., James Andrews). And Manning certainly has the money to consult with anyone he wanted to IN THE WORLD, so yeah, I have a hard time understanding how the Colts team docs are so much better than anyone else in the world on neurological issues.

Same here. I think the issue of Manning purportedly not getting proper medical care during the lockout is raised due to sour grapes about one side or the other during the lockout.

The reports go that that players are VERY dedicated to their doctor. They will not, under any circumstances where they can reasonably avoid it, go to another. It doesn't matter to them that there are other quality doctors. They want their guy, that's the only person they trust. Their body is their livelihood. So yea, I can believe that his rehab may have been delayed by the lockout.

It was perfectly fine for injured players to get attention from the team medical staff. The lockout didn't prevent that.

ETA: And the context was Manning specifically. He did consult with team doctors, and some were wondering why he was allowed to.

From what we've heard about Manning's situation, after the surgery it is a matter of waiting for his nerves to heal and there isn't anything the medical community can do to speed that up.Based on that I just don't know what team doctors could have done that anyone else couldn't have. I would write it off to lockout rhetoric.
