and btw... my 14yo daughter has started to lean into this snark and less respectful behavior in the last couple months (which is getting modeled by mom, unfortunately).

she's a great kid, but maybe a bit more like me in her moods than my happy-go-lucky 18 son ever was.

I must have been the weirdest teenager. I never went through any of this stuff. I went through puberty. Why am I not normal? Oh, the angst.

my dad lost his dad when he was 2, which turned my dad into his self-proclaimed "man of the house" as a toddler. his m.o. was to take care of everything- amazing, lovely care-giver dad.... I never wanted for anything and most things (scut-work) in my life were taken care of behind the scenes by him so I could just go out and be a kid and do kid things like study and play sport and music and with my friends in ways he missed out on.

I hated it.

most people would've considered me a good and respectful kid. but I remember in my early teen years when the hormones were pumping, my dad would say or do just about anything in regards to taking care of me and I would fry him to the ground with laser eye rockets and sophomoric teenage snark. all he wanted his entire life was to be the dad he never had- be there and present and taking care of my brother and me, and like mike with the pepsi, nope.

We played cards together several times a week. We went to the movies together, and on vacations. It was great.
