Timing feels right to snag a cheap vacation to somewhere I otherwise wouldn't consider. 

Anyone been? I'd assume a tropical paradise in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with the primary language being English?

 
If you're not willing to pawn a watch to make it happen, I'd gladly donate to a gofundme campaign to get you there.

Lived there for a couple of years - 30+ years ago

Japanese tourist destination.  Can't believe it would be "cheap".  Typical tropical island.  Temps vary from low 70's to low 90's.  Lots of good snorkeling / coral reefs.

 
its an island. Lots of sand, like Hawaii, but out in the water is a different story. You really can't get out beyond the break in most places, so you never get to water above your waist. 

Im sure there is one or two beaches that you can swim in, but I didn't go to any. I did go to an enclosed part that was pretty cool. 

Guam is like the Japanese people's Hawaii, but it's nowhere near as nice. There are some strip clubs, places to eat, and they do have scuba, including places to get certified. All in all, Guam sucks. 

Air Force base has a decent golf course that's probably not open to the public. 

The history of Guam is a little interesting, but you don't need to go there to see it. They barely did anything to preserve any of it. Oh yeah, it's expensive.

I recommend Cebu, Philippines if you want a beautiful place with way more beautiful women that is cheap. Similar air travel time and will be a better overall experience. Yes, they speak English in Guam and use the dollar, but it's not worth it  in my opinion.

My brother was stationed there in the Navy.  The only thing I remember him mentioning about the place was that the native women are ugly.

guam sounds good. easy trip probably.

just put it through kayak... I think you're dead on here. only about 3k for 4 tickets, and only 19-20 hours flying time. I just booked two trips for us over the next two weekends.

As far as I know, they have taken care of that issue.  That was part of the history I was talking about.  Its kinda interesting to drive down the road, and every 20 feet there is a snake trap hanging in the trees along the edge of the forrest.

As I remember, they are not indigenous to Guam and were brought there to way back when to control a rodent problem.  Well, with no natural predators, they flourished until there was some ungodly number of snakes on the island.  

There are also carabao on the island.  Huge animals.  There are statues of them all over the island.  The native women look pretty similar to those animals.

I got woken up by a pig stampede not too far from the hotel I was in.  That was fun.

Dude, seriously, don't go to Guam.

 
It is quite a bit hotter than Hawaii in the summer.  It is much harder to get to, so I am not seeing how it is cheap.  Hotels are fairly pricey.  Very pretty island and the water is nice.  Lots of high end shopping.  Some chain restaurants.  So decent local places to eat.  Military town so it has all those amenities.

I was there for 2 years - hottest it got was 92, coolest it got was 72.  Sure it was humid, but you had an ocean breeze anywhere you went.

There is a rainy season, where it rains every afternoon - but unless global warming has shifted things drastically, I would not call it "quite a bit hotter".

You are probably right, it is more of a humidity thing.  Temperature diff is like 80-90 instead of 75-85.   Very pleasant on the beaches

Ex-Navy, lived in Guam 87-89. Worked security on the Naval Air Station in a dept that was half Navy, half local civilians. The locals were fan [redacted] tastic. ... Even Remotigue. He was a bit slow, and always made me nervous on the firing range.

One thing tourism cannot capture is attending an annual village fiesta. Pure, universal humanity.

Very scenic, and the sunsets are second to none.

Favorite Guam memory: Finished working a mid-shift and hit a local bodega early morning on the way home, only place on the island with Beck's beer; took nine bottles home and watched Sugar Ray Leonard vs Marvin Hagler, live... Damn, that might be my best memory ever.

 
I just remember learning about Guam in high school in regards to the dangers of introducing non-native species to foreign lands... supposedly the venomous snakes are everywhere.

It's hot and humid all year.  Don't look at the temperature on the weather channel and compare the temperature to Hawaii and Guam, it will fool you.  Hawaii has the tradewinds whereas Guam does not.  Hawaii feels much cooler than Guam, which feels like more of a jungle with the increased humidity and less ocean breeze.  Hawaii is normally in the 78-85 region and Guam probably in the 85-90 region, but feels much warmer.   Some of the best scuba diving locations in the world, lots of strippers, cool hiking routes (not a lot of traffic, which can lead to more bugs and plant scratches), lots of military, Japanese vaca spot, golf courses, close to Korea & Japan.  The roads are made of coral, which is kinda cool but it makes it slick when it rains.  Is it actually cheaper than Hawaii?  I've heard flights are very expensive.

True - but there venom is rarely delivered in bites to humans - so essentially they are more a nuisance than a threat to humanity.

Lived there in 1980-81 as a middle schooler with my Dad stationed at Andersen AFB.  Back then, and that age if you ever wanted a taste of the other side of racism just be a white middle schooler going to school off base.  I loved Guam, but mainly because I could play baseball 10 months out of the year.  We could have played 12 months out of the year but they always shut it down for December and January.

Also,as i remember it is VERY expensive due to the Japanese tourism and flights are not cheap - but I haven't checked in several years.

 
I considered taking a job there with the DOD.  Seriously.  Dated the daughter of the guy in charge of the missiles there.  Seriously. 

But then I discovered there were snakes all over Guam and the daughter I was dating was crazy. 

I bet I started a thread on it because that's what I did back in those days.

I went to Mt. Carmel in Agat, and Bishop Baumgartner in Sinajana.  (I thought Anderson had a school on base?)  It was not too bad in private schools - though our baseball team seemed to get in more than our fair share of fights. 

I must have been particularly ugly as a kid though - there is a current Catholic Church sex scandal that involves the priest who was at Mt. Carmel at the same time I was there...

 
So, to summarize:

Guam is an overpriced, subject-to-be-attacked-by-nuclear-weapons, humid as hell tropical jungle with no prevailing winds whose three main stock of animals are garbage can-sized land crabs, multitude of snakes that can travel by tree, and women who relatively resemble some type of huge bovine animal. You can't make use of the water. You can't make use of the LBFMs and feel good about it. You can't leverage your currency, and you can't be assured you might not get a high speed cobalt bomb delivered to your 95 degree straw hut at any give moment.

I'm gonna pass on this one.
