Tennessee vs. Green Bay vs. SF (1 Viewer)

This thread is kind of pointed to GB and Tennessee fans, but it’s open to everyone’s opinion. As a Niner fan, I gauge the success of the team against these two teams that I think are in their tier- teams that are in the process of successfully rebuilding from recent losing seasons. I respect the fact that both these organizations have been faithful to their draft boards with their BPA approach (despite fan criticism of their drafts, they were successful last year with 8-8 records) and like the Niners, they believe the way to build sustained success is through the draft.

This year, SF felt the need to be active in Free Agency this year and while they’ve been criticized for overpaying free agents, they’ve been lauded overall for a successful off-season. Of course, the games have yet to be played. Tennessee and Green Bay haven’t played the game of overpaying players- logically, one would have to think this is a method that will pay off for them long-term as long as they can keep identifying talent in the draft.

My question is, will there come a time and place where they will have to overspend to make a leap to become an elite team? With Green Bay, isn’t this further complicated by a window of opportunity with Favre at the helm- or does GB or their fans see it that way? Tennessee has a young QB, so maybe patience is their approach until they feel they are at a certain point talent-wise- and then do they start to play the game of Free Agency? Or will they ever overspend? Is it a matter of patience and discipline for Tennessee and Green Bay?

Did SF take a short cut and will they pay for it later? Or was it unavoidable as they came from a black hole talent-wise?

As a Packer fan living in Nashville...here is my take for what it is worth.I like how Green Bay has not gone after some marginal talent in the offseason. Any guy I thought they might get that fit...either signed a ridiculous contract or signed somewhere before they really had a chance (Randy McMichael)Tennessee is about in the same boat...they wanted Samuel or Clements...Samuel was franchised and SF gave a huge deal to Clements. And while they appear to be at the same tier of rebuilding...they are on different time lines.VY just started last year...Smith has a bit more experience...and Favre is still around.Im at least one Packer fan who is not into making moves to appease Favre as I think we are further away than one or two players to make a contender. Im also not sold on Rodgers as the true heir apparent at this point and would rather see how the next two years pan out as there may be a veteran QB that could be had to come in and have an impact (the way Brees did).I love how Ted Thompson is building that defense right now so that if Favre does leave after this year, whoever is the QB will not have the burden of needing to score 30 points per game to have a shot to win.I did not think their WR situation was as dire as some did but hoped they would have made a run at Darrell Jackson (perhaps Thompson or Reinfelt both know something about him as they seemed indifferent to bringin someone one who I thought could help). The Titans I think missed on a few things. VY really has no weapons and now two very young RBs. I expect them to sign either brown or dillon to try and bring some experience to the backfield. I also would not be shocked if the Packers sign one of those guys. What I found odd was that the Titans let Bennett go, but then went after Kevin Curtis. Seemed to me the two were similar enough that you would want to keep the guy who has worked in your system and young QB.The Pac Man thing has also hamstrung them a bit as a playmaker on defense and special teams is now out of the lineup.

I'm not upset with the way Thompson is running the organization at all. I'm very confident that in a couple of years we will be once again a perennial contender (for the division at least) and the team will be built with guys that Thompson and McCarthy decide fit into their schemes. Once this happens, I would expect Thompson to make some moves that could possibly give Green Bay impact players which may put them over the top.

As far as SF goes, I believe that they feel that Smith is ready to become the player they drafted. Since they feel this way, it was time to make the move to become a team capable of winning their division. It is very likely considering that Arizona is still a couple years away, St. Louis is too inconsitant, and Seattle is beginning to decline. The opportunity is there and the SF management think the division is theirs for the taking. I tend to agree.

Tennessee is completely different is all aspects. They have very good leadership, but right now it is very puzzling as to what they are thinking. They do seem high on Henry, but I don't know if they have a receiver capable of breaking out for VY.
