Tennessee: Why didn't they address WR in the draft? (1 Viewer)

Question #1: Why did Tennessee shun all the top wide receiver prospects until the fourth round?

Answer #1: Three reasons: Mike Williams, former U.S.C. star/Detroit Lions bust has seemingly gotten his act together and weighs about 238 pounds. He is working his tail off with O.C. Mike Heimerdinger every day in Tennessee and Dinger is hopeful that he can finally turn things around. Also, Tennesse really likes 2007 third rounder Paul Williams, who basically redshirted last season. Dinger thinks he is ready for prime time -- he's big, fast and physical, but was not ready last year. Finally, 2007 undrafted free agent Biren Ealy, who beat out Eric Moulds for a backup spot at the end of 2007, is Vince Young's best friend from Houston and some on the staff think he has some Brandon Mashall in him -- he's 6' 3" and 215 pounds and runs a 4.47.

Part of it is I think the NFL Scouts and GMs did not think too highly of this draft class of WRs. Which is why none of them went in the first. And even when they first started coming off the board in the 2nd it was the Jordy Nelson's rather than Sweed, Devin Thomas...and so on.

Wow. I find this information a little amazing. Maybe they like what they have because they forgot what a real NFL WR looks like. How long since Mason was there? I'd love to see either Williams take off though.

Well of course. Relying on a bust to date, an impressive practice squad guy and the QB's best friend sounds like a very good potential for success. That's an absolute joke. If those guys all live up to their potential upside they may be the #31 wr crew in the league.

Interesting that Mike and Paul, but not Roydell Williams was mentioned. It looked like Roydell was starting to come on a bit last year, but maybe team brass thinks his upside is limited.

The fact that the Titans see promise in the other 3 WR's is news, while Roydell Williams is already inked in as a starter. You may be right in that the Titans don't see him as a long-term solution.Edit to add: Same with Brandon Jones, to a lesser extent.

Dinger has been working with decent WRs lately though, e.g. Coles, Marshall

On Day 2, NFLN asked Jeff Fisher if their not taking a WR earlier should be taken to mean that they are happy with what they have, and Fisher's answer was yes. He pretty much went through the entire list of WRs they have and said positive things about each one. Take with appropriate salt as you deem necessary.

Didn't the Tennesse brass say something similar last year? (maybe year before)

From a fantasy perspective it's hard to see a WR#1 or WR#2 coming out of this franchise for the forseeable future.

1. They didn't think any of the guys in this draft were better than what they have.

2. They are still living off of Mason, McCariens, Bennett all being late-finds they developed in to high quality WRs.

The Titans have:

Roydell Williams
Justin Gage
Brandon Jones
Justin McCareins
Biren Ealy
Alge Crumpler
Lavelle Hawkins
Chris Davis
Paul Williams
and YES, even Mike WilliamsAll these guys with the exception of M Williams, McCareins (coming back) and Crumpler are very young and just coming (or about to come) into their prime...They should produce in the new OC's system. (We will see about M Williams.)

There was no need to draft several WR's this year. If Sweed was there in R2, they would have grabbed him, but the Steelers got him 1 pick prior.

This WR class isn't very good?

Some thought Hawkins was one of the better WR's in this class. They got him at a 4th round discount.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but did you read that anywhere? I'd be interested in reading it myself.
Yes, I read several reports after the Senior Bowl expressing this opinion. I've felt he may be the best WR out of Cal this year since about mid season. I think he could be very successful lining up at SE for the long term. They just need to find some compliments, they must feel they either have those in house or that there were not any available in the draft - probably a combo of both.

Kiper had him in his top-20 seniors as late as October. Other than that, I saw him graded as somewhere between 70th and 100th in the draft. That was a good pick for them.

I think alot has to do with their offensvie philosophy:Fisherball . They don't want to throw it all over the place. They want to grind it out and win with defense and the running game. The first time the Dinger was there, they had Air McNair...now they have VY...I don't think they will let VY open it up as much as some would think....If this is the case, you don't need first round stud wrs...just serviceable ones

 , exactly.Gage and Roydell will start AND they are the only two WRs on the roster guaranteed a roster spot. McCariens will likely hold a roster spot, but could be pushed out if enough of the younger guys progress. The following guys:

Brandon Jones

Biren Ealy

Lavelle Hawkins

Chris Davis

Paul Williams

Mike Williams

are competing for 3-4 roster spots. If all leave training camp healthy, my bets would be on Hawkins, Davis, and Paul Williams. If Mike Williams continues to improve, he'll push McCariens off the roster. I don't give Jones or Ealy much of a chance of making the final roster. Jones is still a talented player, but can't stay on the field, and the staff doesn't seem to be too thrilled with his lack of development, despite the flashes of brilliance early on in his career.

He was coming on indeed. His last 5 games of 2007:13) 5 - 74 - 1

14) 3 - 30 - 0

15) 4 - 94 - 2

16) 4 - 54 - 0

17) 6 - 59 - 0

He'll never be mistaken for Larry Fitzgerald, but I think he'll be the #1 over Gage in 2008 and worth a FF roster spot.

I think the blurb really was focusing on the younger guys(last 2 drafts). ..eventhough they all are young

Yeah, but you're only disagreeing with a little red x, not a big fat ol' red x. So there's hope.

This right here supports my theory. Like it or not.The Titans SCREWED UP in drafting Vince Young, and are now only trying to save face.Since then, they have changes GMs, OCs, and god only knows what else. They don't want to expose their "idiocy" in not selecting local boy Jay Cutler, and going with the Rose Bowl boy wonder that is Vince Young. He doesn't have it, and they know it. In no way do they want to bring in a high-caliber WR, rookie or otherwise, that will only shed more layers from the onion (or pay the price to do so). They are playing their cards with everything BUT the passing game.1. A ferocious defense, although it has tailed off a bit recently, but stilll solid.2. Feature the running game, focusing on keeping the game low-scoring, while at the same time grabbing any running back they can at a fair price or draft pick. (Young is costing them too much on the offensive side of the roster).3. Re-sign one of the best kickers, including long-distance, in the game to a wealthy contract.I can go on and on, but you get the picture. This will go on until they can get out from beneath Young's contract, while at the same time find a REAL quarterback.Young fans go on and on about how he's such a great leader, wills his team to win, some of the most ridiculous arguments I've ever heard.A majority of those wins come from the efforts of the defense and the kicker. Vince Young cannot possibly be credited for so many wins with only 9 TD passes and 17 INTs to go with it. "Oh, but he runs" they say. Well, if he could hit a receiver he wouldn't have to run. Also, a majority of his completions are dump-offs, which explains his league low yards per completion every year."Oh, well he was hurt". Right. That's comes with running QBs in the NFL. He holds the ball too long, can't read defenses, fumbles more than his fair share in the pocket due to this, but in the end, "he's just great".Ya, right.

Wide Receiver Lavelle Hawkins I wonder about. Should we expect he'll be as productive as Courtney Roby, Paul Williams, or Tyrone Calico? After the last handful of drafts, I'd rather the Titans just don't draft Wide Receivers. It's their achilles heel, it's the one spot they just don't draft well at.

Paul Williams was my deep sleeper player of last years draft. I still really like this kid and am planning on holding him for at least 2 more years. Of all the guys in Tenn, I think this is the guy with the best overall athletic ability and potential to actually become a contributor. Deep sleeper guy, but at the price is worth the risk. I would imagine he is a FA in 95% of the leagues out there.

And adding to the mix... UFA Jason Rivers from Hawaii. Rivers was extremely consistent in all 4 years at Hawaii. 6'2", 194... ran a 4.54 40 at the combine. He was one of the only Hawaii players to have an impact in the Sugar Bowl vs. Georgia (10 catches for 105 yards). There was no better "big game receiver" at UH than Rivers in recent years (including Bess and Grice-Mullens). I know it's hard for a UFA to make the team... but if anyone can do it, it would be Jason. He's a hard worker and class act all the way. Someone to keep an eye on when the final cuts are being made in Tennessee.

Oh, right. My bad, let's see...395 yards rushing (26 Yrds/G). 3 TDs. 5 Fumbles.

It's quite possible Cutler should have been the pick, he is the guy Fisher wanted after all. However, if Fisherball is running and good D (and it is), VY actually fits that mold better. His INTs last year is a problem, if he doesn't improve there, he won't last long, but the expectations for him when drafted wasn't to have him throw much to begin with. Right now, he's the best rushing weapon they have, no defense respects White (or Henry FWIW, yet). Maybe Johnson will help open things up a little while he plays the role of Reggie Bush II without the hype. Even in the toughest division in the NFL, the Titans have a very good chance to make it back to the playoffs. Give credit to the D and Kicker, White gets none from me for 2007. All the "VY is HORRIBLE" arguments are done, we've been over that too many times. Bottom line, their scheme is working, regardless of how much hate (or excuses) VY gets.

Nope, sorry. Found them throughout my offseason research, since most reports discussed the Sr. Bowl I would assume you'd find them in the late January/early February neighborhood. I only document notes as I read them, I don't save the links, I wouldn't know how to file them all. I was glad to see scouts were seeing the same things I saw.

Absolutely, there ya go. Fisher, being a former defensive back from some great Bears' years, knows a QB when he sees one.

This :goodposting: .....Listen, VY is 1 year removed from ROY. End of discussion. Now back to WR's...They are decent, but inexperienced... one or two may emerge, along with Chris Johnson, Dinger's O, a solid D and this will be a very entertaining team to watch.

There's more than one way to skin a cat and win games. I won't deny that Cutler MIGHT be the better QB, and he sure seems to be the better passer. I just won't be making too many judgments based on one bad year (in which they still made the playoffs).

:confused:This is incredibly myopic. First, way to leave out his pro-bowl rookie year. Second, you're judging a 23 year old pretty harshly on one season of football. Awesome.

The Pro Bowl is a farce, and everybody knows it. That card's been way overplayed. He was about the 8th alternate anyway.

Wow Cutler plays in the same conference as Young, yet he still could not even make it to the Pro Bowl as the 8th alternate.

The WRs they have there are not NFL caliber. You can make a case for any number of them emerging as an decent option, and maybe they'll get lucky and hit on one. I won't be trying to crack that code however. People were high on Brandon Jones a year ago. That got them no where. Expect more of the same.

The argument against VY is ridiculous. He's got no options to throw to and he has a bad year. Go figure. I will give them a pass on last years WR corp as they have been rebuilding everywhere. However, to not address the position in FA or with a reasonably high draft pick this year is borderline horrible team management. You are setting up your passing game to fail.

Incidently, I do not own VY or any Titans in any fantasy league. I think he's an excellent buy low if you can pay QB2 price. He's got top half of QB1 talent.

I'm sure the Titans believe in the greatness of Vince Young. He doens't need top flight WR's because he's a superstar. No excuses for his upcoming 2008 putrid performance.

Because drafted WRs are consistently stars? Give me a break. Hawkins has as just as much chance to be a star as Sweed and the others do.No need to waste a high spot on such a boom or bust position.
