Tennis - Sinner accepts three month ban - won't miss Roland Garros (1 Viewer)

Mental block for Serena in these finals. Sucks.
Glad to see Andreescu take it down.  She is awesome, going to be good for a long time.  From the very first match in this tourney, she's just been locked in and all business.

Never much cared for Serena.  She's just such a mope around the court all the time.  And after her tirade last year, I'd just really had it with her.

Great stuff. The grunting is a little over the top but after 4.5 hrs I'll cut em a little slack.

Have to say I'm a fan of Medvedev. Plays fast. Doesn't  show a ton of emotion after every point.

Didn't think I could dislike Rafa more.  I was wrong.

Oh, and the U.S. Open crowd is embarrassing.

That was pretty devastating for me for the run to most majors.

Wimbledon was absolutely gutting..   and this result is even more gutting.   Granted, I knew that once Djoker lost and Roger got hurt that Rafa would probably win..  but when this guy finally showed up in the 3rd and 4th set I thought there was hope.

I'm kind of getting resigned to the fact that at the end of the day Roger is going to be 2nd or 3rd in majors won.. and won't have the weeks at #1 and probably won't have a terribly compelling argument for GOAT.

It's going to be kind of weird that a guy they have been calling the GOAT since 2009 is going to be supplanted DURING or shortly after his playing career.  That's somewhat unprecedented in sports that I'm aware of.

Roger has to be kicking himself EXTRA hard for not winning that Wimbledon with the match points now..  because at least he'd still have a 2 major lead if he'd won that.

Now?  well #### it's going to be gone by the French next year.

It is good to see some young guys like Medvedev and Thiem getting close to maybe breaking through....  but stil pretty shocking that these top 3 guys have the stranglehold on EVERYTHING.

Eff you Nadal

Babe Ruth taking over from Ty Cobb might be a good comparison, although some still thought Cobb was the better player even after Ruth retired.

I've gotta say that at the same time I curse Ralph..  I'll give him props.  I never thought he'd last this long with the style of tennis he plays.   I thought he'd be broken by 31.

Also while I'm not totally shocked he's still winning French opens..  I'm surprised he's winning hard court majors like USO 17 and 19 and was in the finals of the AO.

Frankly right now he's playing as well on all surfaces as he was in 2010 when he took the French, Wimby and USO.      The dedication he has to forgo family and kids like the other guys helps his cause I'm sure.

The fact that no male under 30 has a single slam is a ridiculous stat.  F/R/D have destroyed the hopes of an entire tennis generation.  With Murray and Wawrinka adding the coup de grace.

I would have guessed 55 or 56 tbh
Stan and Andy have six between them.  And JM del Potro and Cilic both slipped one in at the US Open.

You have to go back to 2002 to find someone other than the Big 3 + Stan and Andy at Wimbledon.  2004 at the French. 2005 at the Oz Open.

ETA:  In the last 15 years five players have won every tournament at three of majors.  Seriously, c'mon.  That's crazy.

Tbh, I thought it was always that way with Agassi, Sampras, Everett, lendl mcinroe Borg Connors, etc. Very well could be I only paid attention to those players and not the others that won opens...

Over the last 15 years, or 60 grand slams titles, Nadal, Federer and Djokovic have 52 of the 60 Grand Slam titles.

The 15 years before Fed started winning majors (2002-1988) Was much more scattered, with only Sampras dominating with Agassi a distant 2nd.

Out of 60 majors there were 23 separate winners.

With Sampras/Agassi winning 21 out of 60.

Courier/Becker/Edberg all won 4.  So even if you make it a 5 headed monster they only won 33 or 60.

I'll do the previous 15 years because I'm bored at work.

From 1987 to 1973 it was about the same with a foursome winning a little more than half the majors.

Borg (11), Connors (8), McEnroe (7), Lendl (6) won 32 of 60 majors.

There were 21 separate winners.

Difference between them and now was the "main" guys only dominated 1 or 2 majors.  They very rarely won on more than 2 surfaces.  The Big 3 for the past 15 years have won everywhere.

Even weirder is Borg.  How was he able to dominate on Grass AND Clay?

And did he not go to the Australian Open?

For comparison, does anyone have the numbers from the female side? @Hov34 maybe?
Since the first Serena major win (US Open 1999) there have been 82 Grand Slam finals won by 29 different women.

23 of the 82 were by Serena (more than a quarter)

If you take the "top" 4 women from this time period they have won 42 of the 82

Serena (23), Venus (7), Henin (7), Sharapova (5)

I'll do the Martina/Chrisy/Graff era next.

From the first Evert win to the last Graf win the female grand slams were dominated by 4 women, but not even close to the level of the big 3 (Fed/Rafa/Joker)

From the French of 1974 to the 1999 season (Graf's last win and Serena's first win) this is what happen

102 Grand Slam finals won by 23 women.

67 of 102 won by the big 4

Graf (22), Martina (18), Evert (18), Seles (9)*  (you have to wonder how many more she would have won if not for the sabbing)

If you include Goolagong, Mandlikova, Vicario (each with 4 wins)  Seven women won 77% of all the finals in a 25 year span.  Still nothing like the big 3.

Over the last 15 years, or 60 grand slams titles, Nadal, Federer and Djokovic have 52 of the 60 Grand Slam titles.
Just to piggy back on this amazingness:

Since Fed's first win in 2003 there have been 67 grand slam finals.

Nadal, Fed, and Joker have won 56 out of 67.

But one of them has been in 62 of the 67 finals.  In all but 5 grand slam finals over the past 16+ years you have seen one of 3 men compete for the win.  And 84% of the time one of them has won it.
