It's hard to think of Rafa as the black hat - he seems like a good dude too and is so mentally tough.  I'll be honest - I think if Roger was as mentally tough as Rafa he would be to 20 by now.

Absolutely. 

He's crushing life at the most humble levels as a husband & father to two sets of twins.

After he won his first Wimbledon his hometown village gave him a dairy cow. He was already flying Gulfstreams & splitting time between Monaco & Abu Dubai. But was super gracious, just like he always has been.

 
Fed and Rafa not so chummy.  Not complaining.  Just a bit cold.

I wanted a hug like you see between boxers after a battle.  They barely shook hands.

At the end of the 4th...I told my son that I know we're getting a fifth set...but so far this doesn't really feel like an "epic" match.

Then the 5th set happened and we got that 26 shot rally...and then Fed got broken and then pushed and broke back and then seemed to find a way to go into that realm that Nadal lives in and beat him on that higher plane.

Epic, indeed.

Yes.  Changed his legacey.  

 
After his 2014 finals loss at Wimbledon, I said he wouldn't win another Grand Slam.  Then he came back in 2015 and lost again.  That's when I really knew he wouldn't win another Grand Slam.  Then he made it to the finals at the 2015 US Open and looked gassed after the second set.  I was certain he wouldn't win another Grand Slam.  

One and a half years later and at 35 years old he wins a Grand Slam?!?!  Truly impressive.  Greatest of all time.  

 
Won 3 five setters in his first tourney after six months off because of a knee injury. Against a guy who has been beating like a drum for almost a decade.

 
Roger has 7 more finals appearances in GS tournaments than 2nd (Rafa and Joker with 21) - assuming I looked at that correctly.  While it would be nice to have converted a couple more of those it just adds to his legacy for me.  He's been there 28 freaking times!  I wouldn't put it past him to get to 30.

 
Was Fed's "...and if not" when talking about coming back next year an honest window into his thoughts or just a one-off phrase with no real meaning?

What an amazing start to the year, not only the GOAT winning another major, but doing so against his greatest rival and the sports best duo!

They were discussing this after the broadcast- the analyst in the studio said he thinks it's just that Roger is old enough not to take anything for granted.  I get going out on top if you are Elway or Manning - they had obvious deterioration in their skills.  Fed just won one of the 4 hardest tournaments in the world in an individual sport - why consider not coming back?

Yeah, I don't think it's a Sampras style foreshadowing, just a surprising departure from his "I'll play for years to come" message he's pushed the last couple seasons.  He's been rather candid on a couple things that I can't remember he doing...I don't remember the exact quote, but he openly admitted to Rafa being in his head in an interview prior to the final.  And then this quote about the future.

I cried when Agassi gave his farewell address at the US Open.  I hope we get a similar farewell tour for Fed as opposed to the Sampras exit.

 
Just finished watching it.  Epic final.  So happy for Fed.   Thought he was dead giving up first break of 5th.  But then he took it to anoth level.  Don't think I've even seen his backhand look that good.  Like ever.   

Nadal class act as always.

It was still almost stressful even knowing the outcome.

Every service game save 2 Federer relatively quick holds had break points... there were several high stress multi-shot points.

Unbelievable win...  normally I hate to see federer trading baseline blows with Rafa... but in this case it worked.. the backhand was blistering.

I still can't believe it...  I sure didn't want him to play Rafa.. I had a hard time believing.. even when he was serving up 5-3 (and promptly went down 15-40)..  but this is without a doubt the sweetest most satisfying victory I've ever witnessed him play..  this surpasses the '09 French Open and 2012 Wimbledon and the return to #1... both of those were extremely satisfying results as well.

On one hand it would be nice to walk off after this..  on the other you worked 6 months to get back in great shape...  let's play out the season... he got to the SF on Wimbledon last year at < 100%...  let's give it a go!

Rafa could certainly win more majors..  but with that gap being 4 now...   even at only 30, I feel like 4 more is really out of reach... and 6 more for Djoker?  Feel good there as well.

Wow!  You talk about a surprise major.. this is truly one where I thought he'd be lucky to get out of the 3rd round vs. Byrdych.. it's just unreal

I sat up and watched the match. Wow. Really thought Nadal had it in the bag. Happy Fed won for this is most likely the last time in a slam. Nadal has got his mojo back and will be back.

 
Was not an instant classic in terms of the level of play - it pales compared to the 2008 or 2009 Wimbledon finals - but for what was at stake (legacy) and the feeling we might not ever see these two in a GS final again, it was pretty special. The intensity of each the momentum shift, Nadal fighting off break points only to face yet another one, neither giving in - that was as nerve wracking as any match I can recall. No matter which side young were on, this evolved into a great match.

Nadal may win more at Roland Garros. I have a feeling Novak has a few left in him, Murray is lurking, Dimitrov might move into the top five, and young Zverev seems poised to make a big leap. The big four / gang of five era seems to be on its last legs. Can't wait to see how it shakes out.

Federer is the GOAT today in my mind, but we're blessed to have watched three of the four greatest of all time peaking at roughly the same time.

 
Re-watched the match again... the first 3 sets aren't terribly interesting..  Routine holds with the one break in set 1,  Nadal got the early break and cruised in set 2,  Fed crushed in set 3... by set 4 we get a little more competitive, but Rafa started heating up...   it was all about the 5th set... that was as compelling of a set of tennis as you'll find..  and the mundane generic 6-3 score doesn't even begin to tell the story of the set.

Other than watching a tie-breaker where each and every point can be critical, Rafa's service games, and roger's final service games were as tight as it gets..  legendary stuff.

Roger's backhand won him the match, it was lethal at times and caught Nadal by surprise I think.  Secondly, Nadal didn't move as well as I've seen in the past.  He looked a little older and slower.  I doubt he wins more than another French or two.

If Roger can keep hitting his backhand like at the AO, he'll be a factor and could surprise at another major this year.

Yup. He's not done yet.  If upsets happen again to the big dogs making it easier for him I could see one or two more.  Winning this has got to make Roger feel like he can continue playing if he wants

Odd to see Nadal announce Uncle Toni is a goner after that great run in Australia.. and even more odd that the announcement comes 10 months in advance.

Why even announce that if you are Nadal?   It's not like Uncle Toni needs a farewell tour.

Hey Uncle Toni, I'm done with you.. but not until the end of the year, ok, no?

 
I think it was more Toni's decision and timetable.

He feels squeezed out and decided this is his final year with the team.

I think if you told Nadal he could actually win 2 more FO's and literally not another single match he'd take it.

2 FO's is a freakin' career for anyone other than Nadal and Borg.

We'll see how he looks on clay,  no doubt that if he plays well in Paris and is injury free that he could beat anyone other than a healthy motivated Djoker

Carols Moya is already on the team along with another coach. He's not really an integral part and wants to focus on running the academy. 27 years coaching the same guy.

Plus Nadal is a creature of habit. Toni giving him an early heads up (& this was his call, not Rafa as you imply) gives him the whole year to adjust.

Really looking forward to this year. We saw some interesting players emerge at the AO and I'm anxious to see which ones build on that.

 
Federer just completely dominated nadal, 4 breaks in a straight set beat down.

first time he's beat him 3 straight matches.  he played with extreme confidence and outside of clay may be favored when they play moving forward.

super impressive
