Tennis - Sinner accepts three month ban - won't miss Roland Garros (2 Viewers)

been watching tennis since the Aussies ran the show, know there will never be anything tennis better than Rafa on clay but, after the last two majors, no longer have a problem calling Djokovic the best i ever seen.

and has there ever been a better-looking male athlete than this Berrettini?

Amazing...forgot Murray got to #1.
Yeah Big 4 was a real thing for a good 5 years (08-13.) There were a couple years they won every Masters 1000 and occupied the top four spots all year long.

Murray had a solid decade but couldn’t sustain dominance the way the other three did at various stages.

Man..  Federer back for more surgery.    That's it for him.   If he comes back at all which he probably shouldn't it would only be to make some appearances at maybe some of his favorite tournaments like Wimbledon and Basel.

His days of competitive tennis are over..  frankly they probably were over right after the '20 AO.. but  I didn't know the knee was that bad.

As ardent of a Federer fan as I am, I think Djokovic has all the metrics to be the GOAT and neither Nadal or Federer will hold any of the cards necessary to keep him from that title.   I really wonder if Rafa has another run in him or no.

Man, I sure wish he would've converted one of those 2 MP's in the '19 WImbledon...  it would be cool if he had 21 and Djokovic still needed 3 more to pass him rather than now just one more...

What a career though.. was fun to watch.    Also an odd career..   who is considered the greatest for half their career on the court.. only to be supplanted WHILE still playing  and not be able to enjoy any of that title in retirement.

Going to take 10yo tennis playing floppinha to the US Open. I was told about the qualifiers, which are free and allow you to wander through the tennis center...I think they're this week. Might get tickets for something else later or try to come back to watch some fo the junior tournament. She's not really watching tennis on tv or aware of players outside of Serena and Naomi yet.

####.

After posting that, I went to get my tickets/passes and saw they just made the decision to ban fans from watching qualifiers due to heightened covid concerns. :kicksrock:

I was excited to have 10yo floppinha watch Osaka play 18yo Fernandez last night...and then kind of shocked to see how it went. Even more shocked to see Osakas interview afterwards. hopefully she comes back- but damn if that didn't sound like a farewell speech. only 23, but clearly needing to sort a lot out of emotional/psychological issues first.

Some people aren't comfortable with their fame, and Naomi can't go for a 6AM jog in her home country without security. I hope she finds what she needs.

Most of us think the money would make almost anything bearable, but none of us have had a county's hopes pinned to them.

but she chose that country, no? thought she was born and raised in the US with citizenship and chose Japan instead of the US (or Haiti) to maximize financial gain and game. On my phone at the beach, so I could have this totally wrong.

I didn’t hear her speech but watching the match, I thought she looked like she was done with it.

post match media time was heartbreaking. "when I win, there's no joy- only relief. when I lose it's bigly sadness". easy to criticize somebody for complaining about what's essentially the nature of the sport, but it was seeing that realization of a life possibly misspent in her eyes and voice...heartbreaking.

and during the match...yeah. didn't know her to be a smash the racket storm off the court type of player. she was still hitting some amazing shots, but just as much hitting unforced errors at key moments....and looking completely defeated.

Yea and the walking back to the back judge area for a long pause too.

Just read the interview. Sad. I feel for her.

Certainly sad that he can't get his knee right to end his career in a healthy string of matches, hopefully he still can.

Still seems to be a lot of people naming Federer so might not be too late to enjoy retirement as the best but whatever the case, hopefully he will take lots of enjoyment knowing he was the start of the big 3 era and was the mountain top and standard the other two had to climb and strive to best.  It's one of those unanswerable things but would Nadal be as good today if he didn't have to strive to be better than Federer and then fight off Djokovic as much as possible and would Djokovic be the player he is today if he didn't have to find a way to best both guys?

Speaking of '19 Wimbledon, it's quite shocking that it looks like Federer has lost 24 matches in which he held Match Point.  Obviously that Wimbledon stands out because of it was the final so no doubt he wins the title and a recent chance to add but other ones  in Majors were:

2018 Wimbledon QF vs Anderson - on Anderson's serve but this match went from almost straight sets to a loss in 5.  Isner then Djokovic so likely makes final and obviously since he almost won in 2019 you have to say he could have won this title even if Djokovic is favored.

2011 US Open SF vs Djokovic - 2 MP on his own serve.  15-40 down Djokovic seems to just swing as hard as possible and hits a winner in what some seem to think was Djokovic thinking its over and just goes for it.  Whether he timed it perfectly because he's a great returner or just got bit fortunate his bomb went it, it seemed to break Federer a bit.  Nadal was the other finalist and since we never got to see that match at the US Open, hard to say what the odds either man has but certainly a missed chance.

2010 US Open SF vs Djokovic - 2 on Djokovic's racket which doesn't stand out as much as losing two on his own.  Nadal was again the finalist, who knows how 2010 and 2011 could have ended if they were Nadal/Federer finals.  If a split that leaves Nadal at 20 still as he split with Djokovic but Federer is +1.

2005 Australian Open SF vs Safin - MP in tiebreak on his serve in 4th set.  Not a Final but might as well have been, Hewitt wasn't stopping Federer at this point in time, in 2004 and 2005 they played 5 times at the Majors and Hewitt had won 3 sets total.

2002 Australian Open vs Haas R16 - Federer hasn't won a major yet and wouldn't until 2003 Wimbledon so seems unlikely tallies turn on this one it seems but then I went and looked at the final 8 guys and man, that was a weak QF field.  Federer ranked 11 at the time would have been with 4 unseeded, #9 Safin, #16 Johansson (won), and #26 Novak.  It's possible this would have been his break through major.  The MP was on Haas' serve and there was only 1 so not a big opening.

On the other side it looks like Federer won 22 matches after facing match point.  4 times in majors but didn't end up winning any of those 4 so his tally was never helped by surviving them.  Overall 22-24 in terms win and losing matches where he beat down match points or lost after having them

For his fellow big 3, Nadal has lost 8 such matches, 0 at majors.  He's won 16 times he faced match point, 1 time at a major, did not win anyway.  16-8

Most shocking is Djokovic.  He's lost 3 times when he had match point, zero in majors.  So he's beat Federer as many times in majors after Federer had match point as he's lost his entire career to someone he had match point on.  He's won 15 times when he faced match point, 5 of those wins in majors, and of course 2019 Wimbledon and 2011 US Open are majors he won because he saved those match points and both those times were against Federer when Federer had those match points on his serve.  15-3, +2 majors.

Maybe people who understand tennis can explain better, but watching Novak v Nishikori, it seemed like winning the first set was not the priority for Novak. It didn’t seem like a slow start, it seemed 100% strategic. Not saying he was trying to lose, but winning was secondary. Anyone else feel the same way?

I didn’t really feel that way.   It seemed more like he was trying to gauge “how much effort will I need to put into this?”   Maybe that’s consistent with what you meant, or close enough to be similar.  But that was my take.  At no point do I think Novak was worried about losing.

I think the Andy Roddick  tweet pretty much summed it all up last night.🎾

Why is The Joker so unlikable? Dude is on the cusp of history and I never find myself rooting for him.

I'm not a hater. I like Brady, I liked Jeter, I pulled for Rafa or Nadal (pulled for Nadal in head to head matches I think).

He's just annoying to look at

I just commented he looks like a bad 80s villain from an eastern European B movie.

every tennis coach I talked to this week (and I talked to a bunch trying to get floppinha set up for the fall)...to a person, hates him.

His game even as he dominates has no flair either.

Too bad for tennis.

If this dude had any charisma or was :gasp: American this would be huge sports story for one of the cooler events in sport. Love The US Open.

He has a haircut you can set your watch to. Have to admire that a little.

Yes the Quarters opponent the same. Screeching on her shots, meanwhile this little kid just ripping 2 handers silently like a boss.
the German in the quarters was a good sport about things though. Honestly...the ruskie was screaming and completely a whiney mess. it was glorious watching her lose.

great rally there!
