Tennis - Sinner accepts three month ban - won't miss Roland Garros (2 Viewers)

Novak has had his visa revoked and been ordered to be deported. He will be transferred to immigration detention and possibly deported ASAP. His legal team will appeal. Its just a matter of how quick they can organise a legal argument.

He cant play his first round match if he is in detention or deported.

As an aside, if his visa is successfully revoked he cannot apply for another one for 3 years. Obviously money talks so we will see how this shapes up.

Love that the gov't stuck to their guns.  GTFO Novak.

Disgrace. Australia has completely lost its marbles and credibility. It’s by far the worst major. Time to remove it as one and add something more deserving. It’s a damn tennis tournament, let the guy play.

So Australia isn’t allowed to manage their own immigration issues? When a person lies multiple times on their visa application, they usually get escorted back to the airport and put on the next plane out. He is getting treated well compared to the average joe.

So dumb -- loses a great chance for 21.  He's never favored at the French and he's 35 by the time Wimbledon and the US Open roll around.  I'd still bet on him to get another one, but he's at a place in his career where choosing to skip a tournament could end up being very painful in hindsight -- especially now that some of the "other" guys have managed to take a major down.

He turned up and wanted to play. He chose not to get vaccinated, which was a requirement for entry....barring a provable medical exemption. He tried, but failed to prove that medical exemption and he lied on his visa application.

In full fairness, Australia only had 200,000 cases up until early december. Death count was much lower as well.

Their opening up coincided with Omicron and  one and a half million cases in the last month. The death rate is currently about 50 a day, with most deaths associated to the unvaccinated or those single or double vaccinated with Astra Zeneca which has proven useless to long term protection.  Booster deaths are minimal.

Most of the states or countrys listed got whacked before vaccinations or hard with Delta.

all I know is my friends living there returned to a semblance of normalcy (before Delta before Omicron) way sooner than we did. y'all do not play when it comes to containment.

Nadal will probably break the slam record first, then Djoker will have a chance to tie again at Wimbledon. Then again, the young guys seem to have finally caught up.

Fed is toast, but it would be nice to see him make a run at Wimbledon, to tie Nadal and keep Djokovic in 2nd place for a while.

Australia deaths per million population: 104

US: 2600

They’re just about as fat as us, too.

If we had public health policy comparable to our friends down under, we’d have likely saved over 800,000 lives.

Sadly many anti-vaxxers will just say that those 800k were all old and would have died soon anyway.  It's really unfortunate how the vocal minority is largely keeping this thing going.

Spoiler alert: most people who die are old, and have comorbidities. Our excess deaths relative to historical averages confirm covid is killing a lot of people who wouldn’t have died otherwise.

Anyhoo, I’m glad Australia stuck to their guns.

Will anybody beat Barty?

Floppinha tied her fandom to Coco- she got to do a Coco/New Balance publicity release, meet and greet and became a fan. Coco got bounced in the 1st round.

Barty has huge home expectations. She is a sensitive soul. Not as sensitive as Naomi Osaka. If Osaka is on her game, she wins the whole thing. They meet in the 4th round I think. That lovely new US open champion Emma Raducanu could go out early or threaten all the way.

I think Fernandez has been playing better tennis than Raducanu since the US open.

Right...Osaka is back.

Politicians being politicians.   I hope they feel self important for chopping down someone famous.

Interesting take. Was he treated any different from Joe Schmo?
I can't help but think about Australia and their COVID concentration camps, so likely better than some of their citizens.

Does Australia make it a habit to revoke visas mid-flight?   I haven't heard that one, but it seems harsh.

I don’t think being consistently harsh and not giving favoritism is chopping someone down.

Can you link to the Covid concentration camps?  I know that the Aussies seem to be going over board, but Covid concentration camps seems way over the top.

Kind of like all the Nazi references regarding Covid restrictions.

It’s a hysterical right wing talking point. Anyone who makes it cannot be taken seriously.

Somehow a 3/4 star hotel is equivalent to Aushwitz. If you wanted to come to Australia or travel in between states you had to quarantine for 14 days at a hotel. Once you did that, you were free to carry on. Not gassed to death.

14 days isolation is brutal, but you had a bed, tv, air con, toilets, showers and meals provided with internet. Not killed with your entire family and friends.

You knew the rules if you had to come to Australia for compassionate reasons or travel interstate.

All states have abandoned this due to time and Omicron. Except Western Australia which is still trying to keep this thing at bay. As an fyi Western Australia has had 1309 cases for the whole pandemic and its leader won a state election with 70% of the primary vote. Both sides of Australian politics and 90% of the population was fully supportive of the tough stance.

The horror. Do they take reservations?

JMHO - Seems like any anger should be redirected toward the flim flam exemption process managed by Tennis Australia.

Haven’t followed this super closely but because he’s famous, would be asked about this throughout the match by the media is definitely be why he would get extra scrutiny. No way around that.

Maybe internment camp, or gulag.  My terminology wasn't precise enough here.

Let's not forget that the Aussies were rounding up COVID positive folks and "isolating" them.  Not just travelers.

Maybe... not close. It's a pretty terrible analogy and precision isn't the problem.

And let's take this out of the tennis thread, I think.

My guess is the flim flam process was a big fault. Probably run by a computer program. He ticked the medical exemption box. Attached some paperwork which didnt stand up to scrutiny.

Only people travelling interstate or from overseas got put in 3/4 star hotels. Either by telling lies on their paperwork or they knew it would happen. Every single Australian knew if you travelled interstate there were big risks. Most states were pretty clear on 14 days quarantine for interstate travel. Of course there were screw ups, but most knew what they had to do if they wanted to see dying relatives or return from holidays.

Gulag and Internment camps...this is not appropriate language. 99% of people knew what they had to do. Spend 14 days in a comfortable HOTEL. They didnt have to make license plates, get shanked in the showers, fed gruel for an intederminate amount of time. They were free to communicate with anyone they wished and use the internet facilities available. Its not the greatest feeling to be isolated for 14 days, but it sure beats concentration camps, gulags and internment camps.

Interesting take. Was he treated any different from Joe Schmo?
He actually received better treatment. If Joe Schmo lies on his visa application, no fancy lawyers, no preferential treatment. Out on the next plane and banned for 3 years. Djokovic, covid and vaccine status pending will be welcomed next year. The French and US Open authorities are working on similar protocols, while the British are undecided.

If the French, Wimbledon and US authorities do the same, Im guessing Djokovic rethinks his stance, or he doesnt. He’s allegedly already had covid twice.

turned it on at 5-5 in the 5th. and I was still on edge with butterflies and felt exhausted by the end. incredible- that 3rd set must have been amazing to watch live.

And, now... oof.

Nadal could have 22 before the 35 year old Djokovic hits another ball in a major.  Worst possible consequence for him.

wow.

"I don't have the physical drive, the emotional want and everything it takes to challenge yourself at the very top of the level anymore. I am spent."

Ash Barty just retired. at 25.

She also retired at 16, when she was the #1 junior. Played cricket for a while, came back. We probably shouldn't close the door, she dances to her own drummer.
Yeah shes always struggled with the grind of the tour. She walked into the Queensland womens cricket team, despite no real cricket experience. She enjoyed just staying at home and playing as part of a team. She accredited herself well.

She may come back but it wouldnt be for long. She leaves with her reputation sky high. Well respected and beloved by the Australian public. Australians are usually quick to rip their champions down, but her humility and grace make anyone who tries a *******.
